Application For A Change Agent Strategy In Dissemination Of An Australian Innovation, Barry J. Fraser, David L. Smith Jan 1980

Application For A Change Agent Strategy In Dissemination Of An Australian Innovation, Barry J. Fraser, David L. Smith

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Several excellent reviews of the general education change and innovation literature exist and this literature indicates that a widely adopted strategy for planned development and dissemination of curriculum innovations has been the Research, Development and Diffusion (RD&D) model. This empirical-rational strategy involves the initial development of teacher-proof curriculum packages followed by mass dissemination which assumes that teachers' adaptation and translation problems have been largely anticipated and accommodated. The RD&D strategy, however, has recently provoked increasing skepticism because teachers and schools often have failed to adopt new curriculum materials, to implement them in ways envisaged by the developers, or to continue …

Attitudes Towards Migrants And Needs In Teacher Training : Some Research Findings, R. W. Sealey

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The area of immigrant education has become a major source of interest, concern, comment, and research in recent years. This interest has its origins in the concern felt and views expressed at various conferences that many pupils in our schools are in need of an educational approach which will take cognisance of their linguistic and cultural differences.

Selected Language Tests And Reading Ability, Dale Leavesley Melada Oct 1979

Selected Language Tests And Reading Ability, Dale Leavesley Melada

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

he ability to communicate effectively in oral language precedes the ability to create and interpret language in its written form. Some research studies have shown that reading is a language based activity, but the problem is that little has been done with the knowledge of language and language competencies children bring to school, especially those children who read early or before they come to school. Insights into the ways in which children use language at various stages of their development would greatly assist teachers and parents in fostering both oral language competence and the ability to read and write.

Navajo Aspectual Verb Stem Variation, Frank Wilton Hardy Jun 1979

Navajo Aspectual Verb Stem Variation, Frank Wilton Hardy

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The present study of Navajo aspect has two related obJectives: (a) to define an aspect inventory for Navajo, and (b) to establish principled bases for choices made.

The problem is approached semantically and structurally. Semantically (chapter 1) the most fundamental expression of aspect is some form of the opposition between a point and a line temporally. Structurally there are two verbal systems that carry such information. These are given different labels (tense, aspect), but both convey aspect semantically.

Reading Enrichment Materials For Teaching Borderline Students, Katie M. Jackson Jan 1979

Reading Enrichment Materials For Teaching Borderline Students, Katie M. Jackson

All Graduate Projects

Borderline students are always the students who seem to go unnoticed in the classroom. The students' reading levels are not high enough to function at grade level and not low enough to get the extra assistance from the Reading Specialist in the assigned building. Often the students are given just enough reading material to keep them busy.

A reading enrichment program, developed through the use of learning packets and supplemental books, is designed to help alleviate some of the problems these students experience in reading. The learning packet materials were selected to encourage students to appreciate books, learn to read …

The Graylands Story, Cam Rielly Jan 1979

The Graylands Story, Cam Rielly

Research outputs pre 2011

Gray lands is unique -there is no doubt about that.

Many past Graylanders would suggest that its uniqueness came from its buildings, but there were other teacher-education institutions in Australia which were compelled to operate in unsatisfactory conditions. Indeed, the physical surroundings for students and staff at Claremont had been, over the years since the war, little better than those at Graylands. Besides, toward the end of its life, through the efforts of the 4,000 students who passed through its corrugated-iron huts, the hundreds of lecturers, administrators and clerical officers who remained dedicated despite the totally inadequate accommodation, and the …

Values And Leadership Characteristics Of Seventh-Day Adventist Academy Teachers In Michigan, David Siew-Fee Wong Jan 1979

Values And Leadership Characteristics Of Seventh-Day Adventist Academy Teachers In Michigan, David Siew-Fee Wong

Dissertations

Problem

Two important aspects in the life and work of teachers are their values and leadership styles. The values they hold affect the influence they exert and the knowledge they impart, and the leadership styles they practise determine in part their effectiveness in transmitting their knowledge and values to the students. Moreover, teachers' values are often considered to be closely related to their leadership styles. The purpose of the present study was to determine the relationships between the values and leadership styles of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) academy teachers in Michigan. The study also aimed to provide a description of both …

Mathematics Education, English Technological Universities And Variety Of Entry Into The Teaching Profession, A. G. Shannon Jan 1979

Mathematics Education, English Technological Universities And Variety Of Entry Into The Teaching Profession, A. G. Shannon

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this paper is to raise the issue of genuine variety of entry into the teaching profession in Australia. The author's interest in mathematics and technological institutions has been used to focus the discussion on specific features, but his experience as a member of the Course Assessment Committee of the NSW Board of Teacher Education has made him aware of wider implications beyond the features peculiar to mathematics. Mathematics education itself is a term which can include the teaching of mathematics, studies about the learning of mathematics, and the preparation of mathematics teachers. The various aspects of mathematics …

Student Teacher Performance Related To Cognitive Style, Brian Noad Jan 1979

Student Teacher Performance Related To Cognitive Style, Brian Noad

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Research conducted in the field of cognitive style suggests there are certain learning styles which can be identified, defined and measured. However, the literature points out that a neglected aspect of research is an exploration of relationships between students' cognitive styles and performance. The goal of this study was to explore whether the cognitive style manner of reasoning scales were jointly and differentially, related to student teachers' academic performance. The sample consisted of 40 primary school student teachers enrolled in the second year of the Diploma in Teaching course at the Townsville College of Advanced Education, Townsville, Queensland. Data was …

Comparison Of The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test And The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale In School Age Children, Stephen Skiles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The correlate relationships and directionality and magnitude of mean differences between MAs and IQs of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (both 1960 and 1972 norms) were investigated in a sample of 225 school age children. It was found that MAs of two instruments were more highly correlated than the IQs. For the total sample, no significant differences were found between mean MAs of the two instruments. The correlation between PPVT and the 1960 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs and the correlation between PPVT and 1972 Revised Stanford-Binet IQs were found to be identical. The PPVT was found …
