A Descriptive Analysis Of The Social Roles Of Nursing Home Residents, John A. Hermann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In contemporary American society there has been a growing trend toward nursing home residency for the aged. Up until the present there has been almost no attempt on the part of Sociology to study the sociological aspects of the life within such institutions.

A major objective of this study was to descriptively analyze the social life of nursing home residents. In order to do this, role theory was used as a tool for analysis and applied to the methods of unstructured observation and informal interviewing. The points of analysis were: role enactment, role expectations, and self-role congruency.

The research was …

An Analysis Of Change In Girls Released From Villa Saint Rose, H. Marie Ades May 1972

An Analysis Of Change In Girls Released From Villa Saint Rose, H. Marie Ades

Dissertations and Theses

When juveniles are defined by society as delinquent they are frequently institutionalized. These institutions are referred to as reform schools, correctional institutions or schools, residential care facilities, treatment centers, or variations of the above. They are state sponsored or privately sponsored. Whatever name is on the sign by the front door, each institution is in the business of "people changing."

The excellence of an inanimate product can be measured, weighed, checked, and reproduced; but an altered person is more difficult to measure. If one is in the business of people-changing, it seems important to see if one is in fact …

The Impact Of Coordination By A Child Abuse Committee On Community Services To Battered Children, Grace Jackson Anders, Rebekah M. Burton

Dissertations and Theses

The Child Abuse Committee at the University of Oregon Medical School has assumed a coordinating role as an attempt to provide more effective service to abused children and their families. This research report is a follow up to a 1970 study by Matusak which evaluated the effectiveness of the Committee. The Matusak study seemed to indicate that, because of Committee action resulting in appropriate intervention and services, definite improvement in the situation of the children in the study was seen. This study follows the children from the 1970 study one year later and makes further comparisons of child abuse cases …

The Bearing Of The Sociology Of Knowledge On Sociological Theory, Jerome Price May 1972

The Bearing Of The Sociology Of Knowledge On Sociological Theory, Jerome Price

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Theoretical advancement in sociology is contingent upon an understanding of the cognitive framework of these who hope to convey an explanation of social phenomena. Throughout much of the history of sociology, disagreement as to how one should approach social theory has existed; the most marked difference being that between adherents of positivism and Those who, following Max Veber, attempt to view social reality through the subjective orientations of the individual or group. Speaking of the complicated and detailed classifications of modern sociological theories, one inveterate critic of sociology says that "this multifariousness of classifications denotes a rather chaotic situation, but …

Black Conversions To Catholicism: An Analysis Of Louisville Data, Lynda Dickson May 1972

Black Conversions To Catholicism: An Analysis Of Louisville Data, Lynda Dickson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to Alphonso Pinkney, religion has been important to black people. He writes: Religion has traditionally played an important role in the life of black Americans. The character of their religion is a reflection of their uncertain status in the larger society. Denied the opportunity to participate as equals in the religious life and other institutions of the larger society, black people organized their own religious denominations as a means of coping with the social isolation which they encountered. As the opportunities for social, economic, and educational advancement became feasible for the black however, he became less satisfied with his …

The Sociological Effects Of Marijuana Legislation, Judith L. Friedman May 1972

The Sociological Effects Of Marijuana Legislation, Judith L. Friedman

Student Scholarship

The sociological effects of marijuana legislation are explored through a cyclical relationship between informal social control and formal law. The document defines three distinct foci: the informal code of morals and mores, a transitional period of social instability, and the eventual implementation of formal code. Morals are described as individual concerns or expressions of the superego, while mores are culturally salient norms that protect societal stability. The transition to formal legislation occurs when personal morals conflict too drastically with societal mores, causing a perceived threat to social order.

The text argues that much of the push for restrictive marijuana legislation …
