Crime And Delinquency In Haiti: A Study Of Crime In A Developing Country, Gerard Mauze Jun 1988

Crime And Delinquency In Haiti: A Study Of Crime In A Developing Country, Gerard Mauze

Masters Theses

The primary intent of this study was an attempt at describing, understanding and analyzing the most common types, incidences and forces that produce crime and delinquency in Haiti. A secondary concern of this work was to do the ground work which would enable the formulation of testable hypotheses about the causes of crime and delinquency in Haiti.

Even though a number of developing nations face a rapid growth in their crime and delinquency rates, Haiti appears to maintain a relatively low crime rate.

The law-abiding behavior of Haitian youths is due to a number of factors: (a) the strong family …

The Social Class And Mental Illness Correlation: Implications Of The Research For Policy And Practice, Christopher G. Hudson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Ongoing efforts to unravel the causal issues involved in the correlation between socioeconomic status and mental illness suggest that the hypothesis of a recursive or interactive relationship may be the most tenable, at least with the psychoses. Implications of this research are explored, with particular attention paid to the mental health costs of economic policies, the principles with which states allocate mental health resources, and the use of this knowledge-base in service planning.

Cross Cultural Intervention: The Case Of The Hexed Hair, Jonathan A. Freedman

Clinical Sociology Review

One aspect of my work as Director of Education and Training at Hutchings Psychiatric Center is to consult on cases that are difficult for clinical staff. It is in these situations that my clinical sociological skills are used extensively. I wish to present an unusual case on which I was asked to consult in the Fall of 1986. I present this case with the permission of the client whom we shall call Sophie Koslowski.1

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan Jan 1988

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

Ethnic Studies In The Twenty-First Century: A Proposal, Charles C. Irby Jan 1988

Ethnic Studies In The Twenty-First Century: A Proposal, Charles C. Irby

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

If you will consider the dualistic thinking which undergirds Western philosophical tradition, then it comes as a surprise to no one that the periodization of history is based on white male experiences as the sum of western civilization, especially the glorification of war and the celebration of unbridled "raw-power." So, too, it is not surprising that Aristotelian logic and Cartesian metaphysics form the godhead for monocultural and unisexual education in U.S. society, which is at the least bisexual and multicultural. For a decade-and-a-half now, ethnic, minority, and women's studies proponents have suggested that their purposes for existence were to challenge …

Serving The Elderly: Need Versus Policy, Wornie L. Reed Jan 1988

Serving The Elderly: Need Versus Policy, Wornie L. Reed

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

Medicare was established in 1965 under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act. It was originally meant to eliminate the financial barriers to medical care for the aged. It has been called a form of national health insurance for persons age 65 and over. But it was deliberately designed in a manner to avoid modification of the fee-for-services system that is the basis of American Medical Care (Estes, 1979). As a result, inflation in the cost of care has seriously reduced financial benefits to the beneficiaries and in turn limited the access to medical care by the elderly.

Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker Jan 1988

Federal Narcotic Violators And The Dispositions Received Through The Courts With An Emphasis On Cocaine Offenders, Phyllis Rena Baker

Theses and Dissertations

The United states has been plagued with the problem of illicit drug use for many years. Drug abuse has continued to increase and is prevalent among all races and social classes of people. The question is what efforts have been or are being made in order to deter the influx of drugs into the country along with stopping the suppliers of these drugs and what has hindered the effectiveness of these efforts.

The theory of deterrence was applied to this problem because the model presumes that the punishment of criminal acts could deter potential offenders by making the negative consequences …

Empowering A Feminist Ethic For Social Science Research: Nebraska Sociological Feminist Collective, Beth Hartung, Jane C. Ollenburger, Helen A. Moore, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

An ethic defines the general nature of the morals. rules and standards governing the conduct and choices of individuals as well as members of a profession (Oxford English Dictionary 1971). A feminist ethic for social science research specifically orders these general issues to recognize and account for wimmin's continued oppression within a patriarchal social system and academic disciplines. A feminist ethic identifies this continued oppression as a major contradiction of our research. work and social structure. Within social sciences generally, and sociology specifically. little attention is paid to the underlying patriarchal ethic which informs theory, method and substantive issues. …
