Slavery, Sharecropping, And Sexual Inequality, Susan A. Mann Jul 1989

Slavery, Sharecropping, And Sexual Inequality, Susan A. Mann

Sociology Faculty Publications

Focuses on black women's experiences in the transition from slavery to sharecropping in the South after the Civil War. Although the public and private domains of work became more differentiated, and a sexual division of labor in the home became more marked, the position of freedwomen nevertheless improved.

A Theory Of The Sociology Of Women, Helen A. Moore, Jane C. Ollenburger Jul 1989

A Theory Of The Sociology Of Women, Helen A. Moore, Jane C. Ollenburger

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Feminist theories present a number of options for organizing a model of inequality for women. At times, these present mutually exclusive concepts or definitions, or even causal factors. Patriarchal theories will not be used because they do not perceive women's oppression. Without an assumption of sex stratification and oppression, women's reality cannot be accurately described. Along with these patriarchal models, sex role socialization theories have been criticized for having (1) an emphasis on finding a singular universal truth and verification method, (2) a commitment to objectivity and observer neutrality, (3) dichotomous classification and primarily causal models, (4) ahistorical views, and …

The Hand That Pushes The Rock, Paula Rothenberg Jun 1989

The Hand That Pushes The Rock, Paula Rothenberg

Trotter Review

Only a very few schools in this country actually require all students to spend an entire semester thinking about issues of race and gender. Many more have found a way to incorporate these issues in required courses in “social problems” where racism and sexism get their two weeks along with environmental pollution and other current issues. I think this approach is dead wrong. Racism and sexism are not “problems” or “topics.” They are ways of defining reality and living our lives that most of us have learned along with learning how to tie our shoes and how to drink from …

Children Raised By Homosexual Parents: Sexual Orientation, Mental & Sexual Health, Theresa Gramlich May 1989

Children Raised By Homosexual Parents: Sexual Orientation, Mental & Sexual Health, Theresa Gramlich

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sex and morals have often been factors in custody disputes. Courts have felt that giving custody of children to homosexual parents would create an environment not in the best interest of the child. Many mental health professionals argue that these decisions have been based on prejudice and homophobia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate research on the sexual orientation of children raised by homosexual parents and review data on the mental/psychosexual health of these children. These studies revealed no difference between children raised by gay/lesbian parents versus those raised by heterosexual parents on IQ scores, gender identity, or …

The Impact Of Type Of Ownership On Mental Health Organizations: The Privatization Alternative, Gary R. Mathews Apr 1989

The Impact Of Type Of Ownership On Mental Health Organizations: The Privatization Alternative, Gary R. Mathews

Dissertations

In recent history most citizens have traditionally considered care of the mentally ill a public service, a government responsibility, and a financial expense best acquitted through taxation. A current topic of debate is whether or not mental health care should continue to be provided primarily in the public realm or instead be provided as a business. A question which must be answered as a part of this debate is: Does type of ownership affect service provision, and if so how? In order to answer this question data from the 1983 Inventory of Mental Health Organizations, a national survey sponsored by …

The World According To Nambla: Accounting For Deviance, Mary Deyoung Mar 1989

The World According To Nambla: Accounting For Deviance, Mary Deyoung

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is a pedophile organization that advocates adult sexual behavior with male children. Given the considerable consensus in this society that such sexual behavior with children is exploitative and victimizing in nature, the techniques that NAMBLA uses to justify, rationalize and normalize its philosophy and its members' practices in order to avoid or neutralize censure and stigma, are of particular sociological interest. This paper uses Scott and Lyman's (1968) concept of "accounts" as a theoretical framework for the analysis of these techniques that are found in the publicly disseminated literature of the NAMBLA organization.

Notes On The History Of Clinical Sociology At Yale, Judith B. Gordon Jan 1989

Notes On The History Of Clinical Sociology At Yale, Judith B. Gordon

Clinical Sociology Review

This article recounts one version of the attempt to create a department of clinical sociology in the Medical School of Yale University in the late 1920s. The theoretical perspective of Alfred Schutz is used to turn attention to the linkages of generations of sociologists reflected in the construction of our history as told to young sociologists by their elders. Historical documents and the recollections of John Dollard are used to recount the history of attempts to develop support for the Institute of Human Relations, including a department of clinical sociology at Yale Medical School. The idea was supported by Dean …

Anger Among Prospective Adoptive Parents: Structural Determinants And Management Strategies, Kerry Daly Jan 1989

Anger Among Prospective Adoptive Parents: Structural Determinants And Management Strategies, Kerry Daly

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper focuses on anger experienced by prospective adoptive parents as they go through infertility and the formal adoption process. Qualitative interviews were done with seventy-four infertile couples who were at various stages in their consideration of adoption. Using a sociology of emotions perspective, I examine the source of their anger by focusing on the structural power imbalance between infertile couples and the physicians and adoption agency personnel to whom they turn for help in becoming parents. I analyze the way that this power unbalance constrains their anger and examine the way it is managed according to the "feeling rules" …

The Therapeutic Community In A Psychiatric Facility: Does Clinical Sociology Have A Place?, Beverly Ann Cuthbertson Jan 1989

The Therapeutic Community In A Psychiatric Facility: Does Clinical Sociology Have A Place?, Beverly Ann Cuthbertson

Clinical Sociology Review

Clinical sociologists can play an important role in understanding and treating psychiatric disorders They can provide insight into the linguistic and emotional processes that form social psychological pathways to disorders; they can illuminate the sociocultural contexts from which certain disorders emerge and on which they have an impact; and they can facilitate individual and social change A permanent place for clinical sociology in the therapeutic community of a psychiatric facility will not be created, however, without the interdisciplinary adoption of a unifying conceptual framework in which biological, psychological, and sociological factors are defined as of potentially equal importance in the …

AMERICA'S LARGEST RELIGION IS more often blamed for creating our environmental problems than credited with helping to solve them. Indeed, ever since historian Lynn White, Jr., published "The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis" (Science magazine in 1967), the anti-earth nature of Christianity has become standard doctrine in environmental circles. (Mother Earth News, Nov/Dec issue, repeated this truism in their "Open Road" column.)

The quote above from the first chapter of Genesis forms the backbone of White's-and others'-arguments that Christianity is an anti-ecological religion. And certainly, the notion of subduing the earth and taking dominion over its creatures does sound …

[Review Of] James S. Frideres, Ed. Multiculturalism And Intergroup Relations, Hartwig Isernhagen

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

A volume of the policy and concept of multiculturalism is particularly welcome at a moment when the issue of minority vs. majority rights is once again flaring up in academics and politics. Canada is at the center of this discussion; but comparisons with the US (and Israel) are frequently made, and the US-American situation is explored at length in two essays by Rose. Also, the editor's introduction, though dealing explicitly only with Canada, raises basic issues of the ambivalent view of ethnic difference in liberal thought that transcend national boundaries.

Critique [Of Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas By Alan Spector], Barbara L. Hiura Jan 1989

Critique [Of Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas By Alan Spector], Barbara L. Hiura

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The author of "Asians, Jews, and the Legacy of Midas" presents a provocative comparative analysis of Asians and Jews. Spector utilizes both a cultural and economic basis for understanding the function of Asian stereotyping and applies his analysis to the Jewish situation. While the American context provides the locus of his research, he does present his argument in an international context. Spector illustrates how the categorization of Asians and Jews as the "model" for economic success is dehumanizing as such a perception "drain(s) the life out of human beings and concretizes them into non-human statues." The conclusion of this author's …

Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas, Alan Spector Jan 1989

Asians, Jews, And The Legacy Of Midas, Alan Spector

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In much of the U.S. media today, Asian-Americans are being hailed as the new "wonder group." Local newspapers seem to be filled with articles about how this student from Pakistan won the spelling bee and that student from Japan won the math contest. Weekly news magazines carry articles extolling this phenomenon, and many liberals and conservatives alike enthusiastically promote the stereotype: liberals because it combats the racist myth that people of color are intellectually inferior to Euro-Americans ("whites") and conservatives because it can be used to promote the idea that any ethnic group can make it if only they work …
