Clinical Insights About Mental Difference, John Seem
Clinical Insights About Mental Difference, John Seem
Clinical Sociology Review
Self-actualization is sought by all people. Experience with mental difference, both as a patient and as a staff member in a mental hospital leads to a greater understanding of the meaning and nature of this difference. It arises from variations in biographical experience, social interactions, personal frame and self-choice. Providing the mentally different with the responsibility of at least limited choice empowers them while affirming their human dignity and worth.
Niels E. Hansen: Plant Explorer, Harald Jensen
Niels E. Hansen: Plant Explorer, Harald Jensen
The Bridge
At the age of seventeen, Niels Ebbesen Hansen enrolled at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, where he met Professor J. L. Budd, head of the Department of Horticulture and a creative and inspiring person. This meeting with Professor Budd eventually caused young Hansen to major in horticulture, and plant exploration and development became his lifework. He graduated in 1887 from Iowa State and for the next four years worked in large commercial nurseries in Iowa. This experience, not only supplemented his previous theoretical training in college but gave him an invaluable insight into the problems of northwestern horticulture.

College Students' Attitudes On Neighborhood Integration: From The Classroom To The Community And Back Again, Robin P. Clair, Michael J. Mcgoun
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
I grew up in an all white suburb, well, almost all white. There were two black families that literally lived on the wrong side of the tracks. Two large run-down old houses sat within five feet of the rumbling trains. Sometimes my family drove past those houses in our old station wagon. On days that our drive was interrupted by a crossing train, I would watch the barefoot black children playing by the street. I never thought of our suburb as being segregated, at least not until I was in high school.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
These days, most literary criticism, like the world view that spawned it, is obsolete, a luxury we can no longer afford. Too much of it is esoteric, egotistical, and trivial. While the world balances on the edge of annihilation, we count semicolons on our computers.

Dysfunctional Role Maintenance, Melvyn L. Fein
Dysfunctional Role Maintenance, Melvyn L. Fein
Clinical Sociology Review
Many of the problems that clients bring to clinical sociologists are caused by dysfunctional social roles that they are unable to change. These roles are often fixed in place by dysfunctional variations of the mechanisms that normally stabilize role structures. The cognitive, emotional, volitional, and social components of role scripts that ordinarily keep roles from changing also serve to maintain painful ones. Understanding how they accomplish this is the first step toward facilitating effective personal growth.

Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
After a short hiatus, overt racism is on the rise again. Increases in reported racially motivated crime and violence have been noted all over the country. In the wider U.S. society, identifiable racial incidents have been estimated to have increased 55 percent from 1986 to 1987. According to the Community Relations Service (CRS), African Americans comprised two-thirds of the victims in the cases reported in 1987. Although this racial violence has taken various forms ranging from name-calling, vandalism, and cross-burning to actual physical assaults that result in casualties and death, these have not been isolated incidents but have their basis …

"Black" Or "African American"; What's In A Name?, Johnny Washington
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Within the United States the African American[1] community has again reverted to the problem of ethnic identity and the question, "Who are we -- 'Blacks' or 'African Americans'?" is now being debated. It will be recalled that a similar debate was carried on in the 1960s, and the history of this identity question extends to the 1920s and beyond.

Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of July 16, 1979, an earthen dam holding back wastes produced by United Nuclear Corporation's uranium mill parted in Church Rock, New Mexico. From the widening breach poured ninety four million gallons of highly contaminated effluent and 1,100 tons of wet slurry sands.

The Bridge
January 4 punctuates two events. On that date in 1851 type-setting began for the printing of a new novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. On the same date in 1866 a boy was born on a farm near Ribe, Denmark, who in baptism in the cathedral was named Niels Ebbesen Hansen. The baptismal vessel used had passed from one generation to the next for over 200 years and had the ring of old Danish silver.

Gender Identity Development: A Study Of Caregivers In A Preschool Setting, Salisa Hortenstine Shook
Gender Identity Development: A Study Of Caregivers In A Preschool Setting, Salisa Hortenstine Shook
Masters Theses
This study observed the present conditions of attitudes toward gender roles, as communicated by caregivers in eight east central Illinois preschool settings. Two research questions were formulated in order to categorize responses for the purpose of identifying prevailing gender role attitudes. Those questions were: "How do caregivers in a preschool setting affect gender role stereotypes?" and "What are key communication events that may create or perpetuate gender role stereotypes in the preschool setting?" The data was obtained from personal interviews and the Bem Sex Role Inventory. The results indicated caregivers in the preschool setting did not see gender roles and …
A Gender Comparison Of Former Agricultural Students' Employment Experiences, John K. Thomas, Kathy L. Schiflett
A Gender Comparison Of Former Agricultural Students' Employment Experiences, John K. Thomas, Kathy L. Schiflett
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Deepening shortages of highly qualified scientists, managers, and technical professionals seriously threaten American agriculture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree to which gender differences exist in former agricultural students' acquiring employment in the agricultural industry after leaving college. Data were obtained using a 30 percent random sample (n=1,730) of students enrolled in 1977 at two major land-grant universities in the Southwest. A mail survey conducted in late 1986 resulted in 707 respondents. Male out-numbered female respondents 3 to 1, which was approximately the same enrollment ratio in 1977. Findings of the survey indicate that 9 out …

Sociology And Biotechnology: Challenges And Opportunities, Thomas J. Hoban Iv
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Sociologists have traditionally been concerned with technological change. We now find renewed research interest in the social impacts and risks of biotechnology. Many public and key opinion leaders recognize that closer attention must be paid to tradeoffs, uncertainties, and negative consequences related to biotechnology. Sociologists have a number of important roles to play in ensuring that the benefits of biotechnology outweigh the potential risks. This paper examines several important issues about agricultural biotechnology that have not yet received adequate attention from sociologists. The nature of biotechnology as an innovation and as a risky technology is examined. Particular attention is aid …
Family Type And Familism In Contemporary Appalachia, James K. Crissman
Family Type And Familism In Contemporary Appalachia, James K. Crissman
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Residents of Appalachia have long been considered isolated, "old-fashioned," and "traditional" when compared with the rest of the United States. Such terms as "yesterday's people" have been utilized to describe present-day Appalachians, and romanticized ideas abound as to the contemporary Appalachian family. It is still quite often pictured as extended and highly familistic. This research consisted of a study of 675 rural families throughout the state of West Virginia, which is the only state entirely within the Appalachian area. The interviewees tended to live in nuclear families. They did not display the expected degree of familism. Familism is related to …

Making Family Under A Shiftwork Schedule: Air Force Security Guards And Their Wives, R. Hertz, Joy Charlton
Making Family Under A Shiftwork Schedule: Air Force Security Guards And Their Wives, R. Hertz, Joy Charlton
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works
Through 90 in-depth interviews with 44 rotating shiftworkers and their spouses, this study examines how couples adjust their routines in order to interact as a family unit. We suggest that their views of marital roles are a critical force shaping their practices of daily family life. Wives, even when employed, are responsible for coordinating the individual schedules of family members to match that of the shift-working husband. Wives pay a price for this adjustment work in the form of biological, and emotional symptoms similar to those previously reported only for shiftworkers. Despite their efforts to be providers, husbands pay a …
An Empirical Examination Of Hispanic-Americans In A University Setting And The Influences On Their Attitudes Towards Assimilation, Ramon Rodriguez
An Empirical Examination Of Hispanic-Americans In A University Setting And The Influences On Their Attitudes Towards Assimilation, Ramon Rodriguez
Masters Theses
Recent literature on Hispanic-Americans has determined that Hispanics are the fastest-growing minority in the United States. Both the high rates of immigration and a high birth rate mean it is only a matter of time before Hispanics will form an extensively large population. Hispanics, however, generally remain unassimilated. This study focuses on the influences on the attitudes towards assimilation of Hispanic-Americans in a university setting.
Survey methods were utilized to gather data from a sample of 100 individuals at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. A survey return rate of 57% was obtained from Hispanic students questioned. The data showed that …

The Role Of Values In Personality Development, Joanne Peterson
The Role Of Values In Personality Development, Joanne Peterson
Institute for the Humanities Theses
As an important element of human life, values play a distinctive role in structuring the developing personality. Considerations of this role are discussed from an objective, subjective, and situational perspective, recognized as three known value orientations incorporated into differing personality theories. Initial inquiries suggest that values are not as important as the degree to which an individual commits to a moral life and then employs this viewpoint in sorting through various alternatives to select those beliefs, attitudes and behaviors best reflecting this commitment.
Ritual Talk, Philip Manning
Ritual Talk, Philip Manning
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
The analysis of talk is important for Goffman's examination of the self in face-to-face interaction. Here I suggest that his target is best described as being our ritual talk. Goffman defined ritual in two ways: as the smooth running of everyday encounters and as the honouring of the selves who people them. He suggested that ritual talk is structured by both prevailing rules of social interaction and by the sequential organization of talk. However, on occasion he hinted that this account is too simple. I agree, and suggest ways of furthering his investigations.
