[Review Of] Leonard Dinnerstein, Roger L. Nichols, And David M. Reimers Natives And Strangers: Ethnic Groups And The Building Of America, TöNu Parming
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Although the past decade has witnessed a surge in the number of publications focusing on ethnic groups and ethnic issues, the genre of study which may be called “ethnic history of America”‘ is still weakly represented. As a relatively pioneering effort, the Dinnerstein, Nichols and Reimers book makes a valuable contribution, and it could be justifiably recommended for American history courses, American Society courses, and courses on ethnicity. The general periodization of history is good, and the important ethnic developments within each period are related effectively to the emergence and growth of the United States politically and economically as well …

The Acculturation Of The Danish Immigrant, Enok Mortensen
The Acculturation Of The Danish Immigrant, Enok Mortensen
The Bridge
In the very first issue of The Bridge Dr. Otto Hoiberg had a perceptive article on the subject of acculturation. He suggested that a logical concern of the fledgling Danish-American Heritage Society might be to examine this process. I was particularly interested in his challenge because I have observed this process in myself and others for some sixty years, and for most of my adult life I have attempted to describe and to interpret this in lectures and in my books - not least in my stories and novels.

Community Development: Youth Programming In A Model Neighborhood In Peoria, Illinois, Ann Flesor Henby
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a youth program in a minority "model neighborhood" area located in a low-income tract in Peoria, Illinois. There were approximately forty youth served from June through November, 1980. A journal was kept during this time, reflecting the interaction among the youth coordinator, the youth and their parents, and the staff of the agency, Common Place. The journal revealed the process of developing and implementing program in Common Place's "model neighborhood". Results of the program were compared to previous research on youth programs and others' personal working experiences in a minority …
A Study In The Relationship Between Eye Gaze And World View, Ray Reuel Mosely Ii
A Study In The Relationship Between Eye Gaze And World View, Ray Reuel Mosely Ii
Masters Theses
A careful search of the literature in the areas of anthropology, psychology, and sociology has failed to bring to light more than a very few empirical studies confirming or denying the existence of a relationship between eye gaze patterns and individual's view of the world around and within them. Our study is designed to address this social psychological question.
The seminal work of Silvan Tomkins in the area of ideology has had a great effect on this study. For introductory purposes, we have used his definition of the concept of ideology: "By ideology I will mean any organized set of …

In the fall of 1895 an ambitious Danish-American businessman named George Johnson took over the editorship of a Danish language newspaper being published in the town of Greenville, Michigan . (It is not known how long the previous editor, C.N. Miller, had been running the paper) . George Johnson stated in his first editorial (26 September, 1895) that it was his intention to fulfill the need for a Danish paper in the state of Michigan. In his paper Danish language readers were to be supplied with local, national, and foreign news, advertisements, and a means for Danish-Americans to voice their …

[Review Of] Georgina Ashworth (Ed.). World Minorities, Asad Husain
[Review Of] Georgina Ashworth (Ed.). World Minorities, Asad Husain
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
At the present time, World Minorities is a very appropriate title for a book, since it coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and President Jimmy Carter's strong, favorable stand for them. The publication of the second volume of World Minorities by the Minority Rights Group based in London, England, is a welcome addition to the many voices recently raised to safeguard and in defense of the rights of minorities around the world.
Androgyny And Occupational Choice, Ruth Carol Ellerbusch
Androgyny And Occupational Choice, Ruth Carol Ellerbusch
Masters Theses
Sex-role orientation was investigated in terms of how it related to occupational choice. Sex-role orientation was defined in the following manner: one was either androgynous, masculine, feminine or indeterminate (Bern, 1974). Androgyny is a term used to describe individuals who are flexible in their sex-role orientation, individuals who are capable of being both instrumental and expressive, assertive and yielding, independent and dependent. Masculinity is associated with an instrumental orientation, a concern for oneself and getting the job done and a fondness for what man can make. Femininity is associated with an expressive communal orientation, an affective concern for the welfare …
Carl Hansen, Prairie Iconoclast, Donald K. Watkins
Carl Hansen, Prairie Iconoclast, Donald K. Watkins
The Bridge
In 1906 Ivar Kirkegaard, editor of the magazine Norden in Racine , Wisconsin, asked the writer Carl Hansen for personal information that might be included in a biographical sketch in the journal. Carl Hansen of Tyler, Minnesota, was forty-six at the time, and by his own count the author of some seventy sketches and short stories. In reply to Kirkegaard, Hansen revealed that in his student days in Copenhagen he has been caught up in the intellectual ferment of "the Modern Breakthrough," the assertive embrace by Scandinavian intellectuals of socially critical realism. "Det moderne gennembrud" had no single philosophical doctrine …
The Feilberg Letters: A Danish Family's Reflections On Canadian Prairie Life, Jorgen Dahlie
The Feilberg Letters: A Danish Family's Reflections On Canadian Prairie Life, Jorgen Dahlie
The Bridge
So wrote Aksel Sandemose, noted Danish-Norwegian writer and himself an immigrant to Canada in 1927. When he spoke of iron determination and perseverance, he might well have been describing the Ditlev and Julie Feilberg family, a small part of whose experiences in Canada are recounted in the excerpts which follow. Without making too extravagant a claim for the uniqueness of any one immigrant encounter with a new land, one is nonetheless forced to acknowledge that each individual or family brought with them their own special cultural and intellectual resources. A reading of the Feilberg letters reveals that this family had …

Danish American Political Behavior: The Case Of Iowa, 1887-1936, Stephen H. Rye
Danish American Political Behavior: The Case Of Iowa, 1887-1936, Stephen H. Rye
The Bridge
Although thousands of Danish immigrants settled in Iowa, often in communities which can readily be identified, there is some difficulty in isolating voting units which were composed largely of Danish Americans. For example, Fredsville, a settlement located west of Cedar Falls in Grundy County, became the home of a sizeable Danish community, but in the voting unit of Fairfield Township, census materials demonstrate that the non-Danish voters slightly outnumbered the Danes in the late nineteenth century. However, at least five Iowa townships can be identified as having a clear majority of voters who were Danish in background, and this study …

The Genesis Of Social Interactionism And Differentiation Of Macro- And Microsociological Paradigms, Dmitri N. Shalin
The Genesis Of Social Interactionism And Differentiation Of Macro- And Microsociological Paradigms, Dmitri N. Shalin
Sociology Faculty Research
This paper presents an historical outlook on the macro-micro distinction in modern sociology. It links the genesis of social interactionism and microsociology to the rise of Romantic philosophy and attempts to elaborate methodological principles dividing macro- and microscopic perspectives in sociology. Six ideal-typical distinctions are considered: natural vs. social universality, emergent properties vs. emergent processes, morphological structuralism vs. genetical interactionism, choice among socially structured alternatives vs. structuring appearance into reality, structural vs. emergent directionality, operational vs. hermeneutical analysis. The complementarity of the languages of macro- and microsociological theories is advocated as a foundation for the further elaboration of conceptual links …
Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Masters Theses
This is a study of the utilization of community mental health services by the Chicano population in a Western Michigan community. As members of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States, the Chicanos are faced with many of the same social ills that plague other minorities. Discrimination, benign neglect, oppression, exclusion by institutions, poverty, high crime rate, alcoholism, physical and emotional disorder, and social disorganization are part of the everyday world of the Chicano. The inherent cultural vehicles, which Chicano culture uses in order to deal with the stresses associated with these social pathologies, will be explored. …
