The Rev. Jonathan C. Nelson, a University of Washington Luther an Campus pastor, who intends to get arrested for his planned protest of the arrival of a Trident nuclear submarine at a naval base near Seattle, plans to resign after he is imprisoned.
When the Trident submarine arrives in Puget Sound later this year, Nelson and other protestors (including Nelson's mother) plan to enter the restricted waters around the base in small boats forming a symbolic blockade to stop the Trident from docking.

Bureaucide: A Method For Organizational Disassembly, Harvey C. Greisman
Clinical Sociology Review
Efforts to hold down spending plainly have high priority in government now. One area often singled out for reductions is the "bureaucracy." This word, which has developed such negative connotations over the years, has recently been invested with the character of an anti-Christ.

Self Care As An Innovation In Health Care Delivery: The Health Systems Agency As Medium And Barrier, Yvonne Marie Vissing
Self Care As An Innovation In Health Care Delivery: The Health Systems Agency As Medium And Barrier, Yvonne Marie Vissing
Dissertations
This is an inquiry into the attitudes of Health Systems Agency Boards of Directors toward the use of self care as part of the health and delivery system. Self care is viewed as a current social movement in health care. Contributions and limitations of both classical social movement theory and resource mobilization theory were examined for their utility in understanding and making predictions about the self care movement. Self care attitudes of the boards of directors from all eight Michigan Health Systems Agencies (HSAs) were analyzed through the Self Care Attitude Index (SCAI). Data were gathered via self-administered, mail questionnaires. …

Intimacy In Context: A Theory Of Interpersonal Relationships, Sara Mirjam Terian
Intimacy In Context: A Theory Of Interpersonal Relationships, Sara Mirjam Terian
Masters Theses
To define intimacy, interpersonal relationships are divided into four major categories that encompass the whole range of interpersonal behavior: strangers, acquaintances, friends, and intimates. These are seen as progressive stages, defined by the individual's subjective, affective orientation, and discernable by behavioral indicators. Strangers are divided into total, encountered, and familiar strangers, acquaintances into mere and friendly acquaintances, and friends into Just friends, casual friends, and close friends. The process culminates in intimacy which is divided into three aspects: psychological, the necessary aspect, biological, and ideological. Total intimacy is the presence of all three. This framework has explanatory and predictive value, …

Humanism And Social Work Paradoxes, Problems, And Promises, Norman Goroff
Humanism And Social Work Paradoxes, Problems, And Promises, Norman Goroff
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Although social work is viewed as a human service profession, with the implicit assumption that it is humanistically oriented, an examination of some of the theoretical orientations, practice settings and practice methodology will reveal a number of paradoxes, problems, and potential promises. I do not claim to provide more than a sampling, to provide a more exhaustive analysis would require considerably more time than is available.

Danes And Danish On The Great Plains: Some Sociolinguistic Aspects, Donald K. Watkins
Danes And Danish On The Great Plains: Some Sociolinguistic Aspects, Donald K. Watkins
The Bridge
The number of Scandinavians in the upper Midwest in 1850 was insignificant compared to the tens of thousands who arrived annually after the Civil War; but the early settlements, primarily in northern Illinois and eastern Wisconsin, typically served as way stations for the Scandinavians who came later, staying near the Great Lakes for shorter or longer periods of time before moving westward where more favorable conditions beckoned. It is in this connection one finds the nominal beginnings of a Danish presence in the prairie states, the region of the country most favored by the somewhat more than three hundred thousand …

The Bridge
This short book tells the reader what life was like for one young man in a small village in Denmark in the first two decades of this century. As the author writes in the Foreword: " it is a collection of reminiscences, a mosaic of people and places seen from a long distance, both geographically and chronologically." This sensitive sketch of a childhood and adolescence in the first two decades of the twentieth century will make all readers aware of the monumental changes in the world from then until now. While many of the individual behaviors can be related to …

The Bridge
The problem of locating and preserving Danish American historical materials has been in the spotlight in recent years. It has been discussed frequently in The Bridge and the Newsletter of the Danish American Heritage Society. In cooperation with Grand View College, the society launched a major project, the Danish Immigrant Archival Listing (DIAL), under Thorvald Hansen's leadership in 1979. That project aims to locate all Danish American historical materials presently deposited in archives and elsewhere throughout the United States, Canada and Denmark.
Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale
Rasmus Sorensen And Danish Emigration, 1847-1863, Frederick Hale
The Bridge
Probably no individual played a more seminal role in the limited Danish emigration to North America before and during the Civil War than Rasmus Sorensen. From the late 1840s until the early 1860s this author, educator, politician, and social reformer led three groups of his countrymen to Wisconsin and, through numerous booklets, speeches, and letters encouraged others to settle elsewhere in the United States and Canada. Yet Sorensen has generally been little more than a supernumerary in the historiography of this transatlantic migration. Its pioneering historian, Peter Sorensen Vig, devoted twelve pages to him in his mammoth compendium, a dozen …

Marxist Paradigm And Academic Freedom, Dmitri N. Shalin
Marxist Paradigm And Academic Freedom, Dmitri N. Shalin
Sociology Faculty Research
The Russian October Revolution dealt a devastating blow to Marxism from which Marxist sociology did not begin to recover until recently. Stalin's "contributions" to Marxist theory and practice had a particularly adverse effect on the fate of Marxism in the West. Whatever hopes were generated by the de-Stalinization campaign in the Soviet Union proved short-lived. By the time Soviet tanks entered Prague and Soviet authorities resumed show trials, few intellectuals in the capitalist West could speak of Soviet Marxism without acute resentment or at least tacit embarrassment.
In Mills's words, ". . . marxism-leninism has become an official rhetoric with …
Misreading Weber: The Concept Of 'Macht', Isidor Wallimann
Misreading Weber: The Concept Of 'Macht', Isidor Wallimann
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration
Max Weber's definition of power (Macht), as presented in English texts, is examined in the light of the German original. Differences and discussed and an attempt is made to convey the sense of Weber's original definition. Examples of research based on operationalizations of earlier versions are then evaluated
Aging As Symbolic Interaction, Roger A. Lohmann
Aging As Symbolic Interaction, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper consists of four parts. Part I is a review of the relationship of research and theory in social gerontology. Part II outlines the case for a symbolic interactionist theory of aging. Symbolic interaction is identified and discussed as a theoretical orientation compatible with a significant portion of the research in aging done within the “activity theory” tradition, and also capable of contributing to and informing intervention. Part III explores a number of recent efforts toward synthesis in social gerontology and Part IV explores contributions of those efforts to a symbolic interactionist theory of aging.
[Review Of] John U. Ogbu. Minority Education And Caste: The American System In Cross-Cultural Perspective, V. Thomas Samuel
[Review Of] John U. Ogbu. Minority Education And Caste: The American System In Cross-Cultural Perspective, V. Thomas Samuel
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In this comprehensive and well documented study on the minority education in America, Ogbu approaches the question of poor minority performance in school from a different but a powerful crosscultural perspective. His major hypothesis is that lower school performance on the part of blacks is an adaptation to their social and occupational positions in adult life, which do not require high educational qualifications (p. 213). The dominant white caste maintains the adaptation by providing blacks with inferior jobs. The adaptation is also maintained by certain structural and cultural features of the black environment which have evolved under the caste system. …
