Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Albert F. Inclan
Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Albert F. Inclan
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Vazquez brings to the fore a number of elements which should be of concern to educators as well as counselors today. His article is primarily concerned with the intertwining of cultures in the United States as ethnic minority groups increase in numbers.
Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Russell Endo
Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Russell Endo
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The main subject of Jesse Vazquez's article is clearly the ethnic matrix, although several related issues are also covered. While any of the latter could be discussed here, my comments will focus on the matrix itself.
Abstracts From The-Fourteenth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies, 1986, Fresno, California
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The following abstracts and respondent comments reflect the variety of responses to the Conference theme "Visions and Revisions" and suggest the multiple ways in which participants approached both the pedagogical and theoretical aspects of ethnic studies.
Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], James H. Williams
Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], James H. Williams
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Vazquez's psychosocial model for understanding ethnicity and the ethnic process in American society and how this model could be used by practitioners and researchers to further expand their own work is noble. Vazquez fulfilled his purpose. However, the underlying assumption is somewhat misleading, i.e., practitioners and researchers, generally, are not employing the ethnic matrix model. Vazquez states that the absence of ethnic content and concern with ethnic issues in professional training programs was seriously questioned.

Critique [Of Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White? By Robert A. Martinez], Barbara L. Hiura
Critique [Of Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White? By Robert A. Martinez], Barbara L. Hiura
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Race, class and identity -- key ethnic issues of the 1980s -- have been analyzed from various disciplinary perspectives, and Martinez's article is a contribution to the growing number of written assessments concerning racism and classism in the United States. His research explores the psychological and social perceptions of color, race, identity, and class among Puerto Ricans living in the United States and in Puerto Rico.
The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Most human services practitioners at one time or another must confront cultural issues which in many ways have a direct impact on their role and effectiveness as helping professionals. This article links the phenomenon of ethnic identity to problems, practices, and policies encountered in the field of human services. Although most of the theoretical concepts presented here are related to counseling psychology and education, other practitioners with culturally diverse client populations will also find the information applicable to their work. The social scientist, teacher and researcher, who is often the disseminator of theoretical and methodological paradigms, should also find these …
Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.
The Case For Animal Rights, Tom Regan
The Case For Animal Rights, Tom Regan
Animal Welfare Collection
In the space I have at my disposal here I can only sketch, in the barest outline, some of the main features of the book Its main themes-and we should not be surprised by this-involve asking and answering deep, foundational moral questions about what morality is, how it should be understood, and what is the best moral theory, all considered. I hope I can convey something of the shape I think this theory takes. The attempt to do this will be (to use a word a friendly critic once used to describe my work) cerebral, perhaps too cerebral. But this …

[Review Of] James E. Blackwell And Philip Hart. Cities, Suburbs And Blacks, James H. Williams
[Review Of] James E. Blackwell And Philip Hart. Cities, Suburbs And Blacks, James H. Williams
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Because blacks who reside in cities and suburbs are a popular subject among urban specialists, critics must constantly ask the question, to what extent does a recent publication break new ground in terms of creativity and scholarship? Inhabitants have known for many decades that cities and suburbs are not only physical environments in which smoke, dust, heat, noise, filth, and darkness threaten the human organism, they are also social systems in which the circulation of goods and people is a central function. Cities and suburbs can grow and change only if the circulatory system also changes.
Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild
Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.
William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications
The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …
Shift Rotation Among Correctional Officers As A Source Of Perceived Job Related Stress, Phyllis Ingram
Shift Rotation Among Correctional Officers As A Source Of Perceived Job Related Stress, Phyllis Ingram
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
My formal hypothesis for this study is that shift rotation among correctional officers has an effect on correctional officer stress. Although there are many definitions of stress, for the purpose of this study stress is defined as conscious nervous tension. Many authors believe that stress develops from a person's reactions to certain situations that are threatening or exert pressure on them. It is felt that whatever the cause, stress depends not on the outside event but on how one reacts to it. For the purpose of this study, stress was not formally defined to the correctional officers because I was …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "A Market Analysis of Nebraska City," by David R. DiMartino.
Most communities in Nebraska experienced crease in net taxable sales during the early eighties. Nebraska City's decrease has not been as severe as that in other communities in southeast Nebraska, although the percentage decline was greater than the state average (table 1). This decrease in net taxable sales prompted the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement District Board to commission this market area analysis.

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …
