Social Service Delivery Systems: The Impact Of Technology And Organizational Structure, Louella Mann Mar 1986

Social Service Delivery Systems: The Impact Of Technology And Organizational Structure, Louella Mann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Changes in work and social structures are reviewed for the period from the early industrial era to the present. Work structure is hypothesized to have a significant impact upon society and the individual. The structure of the modern work setting and the rapid changes in technology have increased the stress associated with anxiety and isolation. In turn, these problems contribute to the onset of social ills. Also examined are ways to diminish the negative effects of the role conflict which results from the divergent structures present in the personal and work settings. Predictions about the future of social service delivery …

From Social Welfare To Welfare Society: A Humane World Beyond Social Welfare?, Roger A. Lohmann Feb 1986

From Social Welfare To Welfare Society: A Humane World Beyond Social Welfare?, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the 1980's, the relationship of social welfare activities to the future has been dramatically altered. Until the conservative ascendency of the Reagan government, the future of social welfare was defined largely in terms of the incremental welfare state, characterized by gradual expansion of tax supported programs and benefits, with periodic policy refinements and extensions of benefits and coverages to new populations. Since 1980, all sorts of "doom and gloom" has been spread--mostly linked to short-term developments. This paper is an effort to propose a moderately optimistic alternative future for one segment of the social welfare system--personal care services. In …

Helping Couples With Neurological Disabilities: A Job Description For Clinical Sociologists, Joseph Ventimiglia Jan 1986

Helping Couples With Neurological Disabilities: A Job Description For Clinical Sociologists, Joseph Ventimiglia

Clinical Sociology Review

This essay applies insights from data gathered in a previous study on divorce and disability to suggest contributions clinical sociologists can make to ease the human condition. Intensive interviews were taken of couples one of each of whom was afflicted with multiple sclerosis, a demyelinating neurological disorder. Given the elevated divorce rate among MS couples, the previous study specified some conditions under which the chances of divorce could be reduced. Clinical sociologists can serve in six basic functions, perhaps more distinct in theory than in practice: 1) teacher; 2) forecaster; 3) metaphysician; 4) sociotherapist; 5) facilitator of interaction; and 6) …

Allegations by Lutheran and Presbyterian congregations that body-bug-packing undercover agents of the United States government violated their constitutional rights were dismissed in mid October by a federal judge in Phoenix, AZ.

What it means, commented the Rev. James A. Oines, pastor of Alzona Lutheran Church, Phoenix, one of the congregations that was infiltrated, is that the federal government "can come into any church, any time, with a tape recorder, and without a warrant. And they have said they would do it."

When Rev. Brian (Red) Burchfield went to South Africa, he believed he and his co-pastor/wife Susan were missionaries to that racially-divided nation. Now, however, he understands that he was meant all along to be a missionary to the U.S.

Arriving in Cape Town last January to serve several, small congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa (ELCSA), Burchfield said they were met with two responses: "a warm and gracious reception and ... an attitude that took for granted that we would be going back to the United States and beginning our real work."

Church leaders in El Salvador, the U.S. and Europe have firmly denied accusations by a member of the non-governmental Human Rights Commission that the leader of the Lutheran Synod of El Salvador is a member of the Communist Party.

In a May 30 press conference, Luz Yaneth Alfaro Pena linked humanitarian and church-based organizations to the Faribundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), a guerrilla federation aiming to overthrow the Salvadoran government.

Lutherans Concerned/North America has recently distributed '' A Call for Dialog,'' a theological document offered as a resource for gay and lesbian Christians and for the churches.

He Came, He Saw, He Conquered, Aase Bak

The Bridge

Every morning when President Reagan leaves the White House and casts worried glances to the left toward Capitol Hill where Congress sits and impedes life for him, he can hardly avoid seeing the equestrian statue in front of the Treasury Building. The statue is one of the great heroes of the United States, a victor from the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman. He is shown mounted and surrounded by symbols of war and peace.

A Case Against Animal Rights, Jan Narveson Jan 1986

A Case Against Animal Rights, Jan Narveson

Animal Welfare Collection

Down through the past decade and more, no philosophical writer has taken a greater interest in the issues of how we ought to act in relation to animals, nor pressed more strongly the case for according them rights, than has Tom Regan, in many articles, reviews, and exchanges at scholarly conferences and in print. It is a pleasure to join him on this symposium, to explore this interesting and important set of issues.

I shall begin by outlining, as fairly as I can, Regan's view of the matter, and then sketch my alternative. Regan has in fact criticized certain aspects …

Human/Farm Animal Relationships, Jack L. Albright Jan 1986

Human/Farm Animal Relationships, Jack L. Albright

Agribusiness Collection

There are various combinations of human beings and farm animals. This paper attempts to evaluate those few studies of humans handling farm animals within a prescribed environment. Personality traits of dairy farmers and livestock people as determined by the Eysenck Personality Inventory (Eysenck 1977) need further study (Seabrook 1974; Arave and Brown 1979). Seabrook's sample size was small (20 herds) and these herds were criticized for having low yields while Arave and Brown's questionnaire did not go far enough.

Bringing Us Together, John W. Grandy Jan 1986

Bringing Us Together, John W. Grandy

Animal Welfare Collection

In recent years, much has been made of the differences between animal protection/welfare/rights and conservation. In simplistic terms, the difference is said to be between a view of wild animals as individuals and as populations. Some conservationists claim to see it as a waste to devote time and energy to ensuring the survival and health of individual animals. Conversely, others seem to take the view that the health and welfare of the individual animal is of highest importance.

But like many other discussions based on philosophical differences between largely compatible philosophies, the differences are far more apparent than real-and differences …

Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White?, Robert A. Martinez Jan 1986

Puerto Ricans: White Or Non- White?, Robert A. Martinez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The question of race and racial identity among Puerto Ricans has been one of great confusion and misunderstanding. The confusion and misunderstanding exist both among Puerto Ricans and Anglo-Americans. This is a study of the paradox of race perceptions among mainland-bred and island-bred Puerto Ricans. This study was undertaken to look at several related issues: What are the racial perceptions and attitudes held by Puerto Ricans, both on the island and the continental mainland? Further, to what extent has Americanization of Puerto Ricans affected those perceptions and attitudes? Likewise, what role does class consciousness and class mobility play? How do …

Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students, Keith D. Parker Jan 1986

Self-Evaluation Of Black And White College Students, Keith D. Parker

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

A major issue in the social psychology of race relations has been the axiom that blacks tend to manifest lower self-esteem than whites.[1] Much of the empirical support for this hypothesis came from studies demonstrating that blacks are stigmatized and subjected to a variety of unpleasant and derogatory experiences.[2] However, these studies are limited in two respects: first, by their use of small, nonrepresentative samples (primarily nursery school and kindergarten children) and second, by their reliance upon inferential (semi-projective) measures of self-esteem.[3]

Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Albert F. Inclan

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Vazquez brings to the fore a number of elements which should be of concern to educators as well as counselors today. His article is primarily concerned with the intertwining of cultures in the United States as ethnic minority groups increase in numbers.

Critique [Of The Ethnic Matrix: Implications For Human Service Practitioners By Jesse M. Vazquez], Russell Endo

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The main subject of Jesse Vazquez's article is clearly the ethnic matrix, although several related issues are also covered. While any of the latter could be discussed here, my comments will focus on the matrix itself.
