[Review Of] Joy Hendry, Marriage In Changing Japan: Community And Society, Lyle Koehler Jan 1983

[Review Of] Joy Hendry, Marriage In Changing Japan: Community And Society, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Joy Hendry uses a social anthropological examination of one community, the village of Kurotsuchi on southerly Kyushu Island, to illuminate the pivotal role of marriage in Japanese society. Marriage from pre-Meiji times to the present, she points out, has been crucial to the continuation of the ie, that union of the genealogical family and household/property. Marriage establishes the house head as an integral member of the village associations for governance, tax collection, care of the shrines, road building, and mutual aid. Moreover, it brings together Shintoism and Buddhism in a harmonious blending of rituals concerning birth and death.

[Review Of] Virginia Huffer, The Sweetness Of The Fig: Aboriginal Women In Transition, Lyle Koehler Jan 1983

[Review Of] Virginia Huffer, The Sweetness Of The Fig: Aboriginal Women In Transition, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

During 1970 and 1973, University of Maryland professor of psychiatry Virginia Huffer spent some time with the women of the Lardil and Kaiadilt tribes who live on Mornington Island in northern Australia's Gulf of Carpenteria [Carpentaria]. Forced to accommodate increasingly to Western ways, these women struggle to maintain traditional linkages while they undergo modern change. This conflict between the past and the future, as well as the everyday realities of their existence, are presented through Huffer's psychobiographical lens, primarily through the intervention and words of her chief informant, Elsie Roughsey, a "cooperative, friendly, generous, and intelligent" Lardil woman who is, …

[Review Of] James Diego Vigil, From Indians To Chicanos: A Sociocultural History, Homer D.C. Garcia

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Historians are typically satisfied with pinpointing dates and describing associated events while minimizing speculation and interpretations which cannot be directly supported with evidence. There is no question that this is a vital and popular methodological approach, and Chicano studies historians have usually complied with this norm--until now.

Review Of Contexts Of Behavior: Anthropological Dimensions, By Robert J. Maxwell, Michael R. Hill Jan 1983

Review Of Contexts Of Behavior: Anthropological Dimensions, By Robert J. Maxwell, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This book is a massive disappointment. The well-designed dust jacket indicates that Maxwell, "Describes the interaction between humans and their environments, drawing upon a wide range of ethological and anthropological research to form a comprehensive, integrated picture of human cultural ecology." This is only partially true. Maxwell describes a substantial amount of research, but his review is neither comprehensive nor well-integrated.

Maxwell throws out a bibliographic fishing net and cleans his variegated catch in slip-shod fashion. Unfortunately, his net also has gaping, unexplained holes. The best that one can say about this book is that the bibliography would have been …

Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella Jan 1983

Two Ways Of Knowing: World Views, And Their Impact On Mankind's Ability To Understand, Michael Alan Martella

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The history of intellectual debate has long included a basic conflict among those who seek to understand the way that mankind knows, or tries to gain knowledge. Knowing has typically been addressed from one of two perspectives; either analytically or intuitively. Analytic, outer knowing is based on the idea that a reasonable and logical examination of the variables will eventually produce a clear and total picture of the knowledge being presented or investigated. Intuitive, inner knowing has a different perspective, and seeks to know a thing sympathetically, understanding its nature by insight.

A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni Jan 1983

A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this thesis a limited test of Max Weber's theory of charisma was conducted by applying it to the case of a Third World leader, that of Fidel Castro. This was achieved by reviewing and analyzing Weber's original formulation, the various interpretations of it that followed, and the different ways Weber's theory has been reconstructed for the purpose of guiding research on charisma. Ralph Hummel's (1972) and Richard Fagen's (1965) separate sets of propositions, based on reconstructions of different parts of Weber's theory, were chosen to guide the research on Castro's case. The interpretive data generated by this process constituted …

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis Jan 1983

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis deals with the experience of migration during the formative years of the Black community of Waterloo, Iowa and perceptions of the quality of life from 1910-1970. This exploratory study is based on survey data and folk/oral history derived fr001 a selected sample of men and women, age 50-90 years, of the Black community of Waterloo. The early history of American Blacks has been grossly neglected by historians and others and, as a result, sources of documented information are limited. Because of this, it is important that existing information be preserved. It is this author's hope that survey data …

The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly Oct 1982

The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the emergence of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and finds previous explanations of its origin inadequate. I trace the roots of this law to the protests of rank-and-file workers across the United States at a time when the support of these workers was particularly important to the two main political parties. The protest was directed not only at those employers who operated unsafe and unhealthy workplaces, but also at union officials who paid little or no attention to safety and health issues in negotiating new contracts.

Defeminizing Social Policy, David Stoesz Sep 1982

Defeminizing Social Policy, David Stoesz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social policy initiatives by the evangelical right and neoconservative movements are reversing liberal programs that have benefited women. This represents an attempt to defeminize social policy. Essential to this transformation are theoretical interpretations of economics and sociology which, combined with religious conservatism, portend the restoration of patriarchal culture. The ideology guiding the defeminizing of social policy is so pervasive as to suggest that regaining ground lost will be exceedingly difficult for those promoting social services for women.

Working Women's Marginalization In Denmark: Traditional Assumptions And Economic Consequences Of Social And Labor Market Policies, Jennifer G. Schirmer Sep 1982

Working Women's Marginalization In Denmark: Traditional Assumptions And Economic Consequences Of Social And Labor Market Policies, Jennifer G. Schirmer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although it cannot be said that women's marginality in the labor market in Denmark from the 1960s to the present was 'planned' in any formal sense, the premise behind social and labor market policy measures, such as daycare and maternity leave, that women primarily serve as part-time service workers to increase economic growth, indicates a form of assumed and prescribed secondariness for women. By engaging the market and the family on strictly traditional terms, the social policy and labor market measures enacted to encourage women's entrance into the labor force in the late 1960s serve to institutionalize women's marginality within …
