Successful Small Business Strategies Addressing Financially Related Adverse Circumstances, Shirley Thomas May 2024

Successful Small Business Strategies Addressing Financially Related Adverse Circumstances, Shirley Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small businesses are a crucial part of the economy of the United States. However, once a small business owner experiences a financially related adverse circumstance, the chances of failure increase exponentially. Grounded in the rational choice theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify and explore the effective strategies small business owners use when addressing financially related adverse circumstances. The participants were four small business owners in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area who used successful strategies to address financially related adverse circumstances. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and reviews of organizational documents and analyzed using …

It’S All In Your Mind: Mindset And Eternal Destiny, Eric S. Henderson May 2024

It’S All In Your Mind: Mindset And Eternal Destiny, Eric S. Henderson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A Christian’s mindset is key to his or her ongoing life as a believer. The choice of one’s mindset critically affects almost every aspect of a Christian’s life. This impact occurs throughout the person’s life, because one’s mindset must be chosen continuously. One cannot “set it and forget it.” Satan constantly lurks around to try to draw the believer away from thinking about spiritual things. One’s mindset matters because the focus of one’s mind to a large extent determines one’s eternal destiny. This dissertation will offer support for libertarian free will and the possibility of apostasy, and then examine the …

The Canonical Significance Of Mindset In Romans 8:5–14 (Φρονέω And Its Cognates): Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Application, And Evangelism, Denise Anne Pass May 2024

The Canonical Significance Of Mindset In Romans 8:5–14 (Φρονέω And Its Cognates): Implications For Biblical Interpretation, Application, And Evangelism, Denise Anne Pass

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The term mindset is common in today’s vernacular, but its significance in the canon has scarcely been explored. Cultures throughout time have viewed mindsets as something that human volition alone can affect. Yet the inability to maintain the mindset God requires of his people has prevented them from faithfully keeping the covenant and rightly interpreting Scripture. Mindsets are habitual or innate mental attitudes that determine how one will interpret life situations and the Word of God, impacting relationships with others and one’s ability to love God and walk in obedience to His Word. Paul’s extensive use of φρονέω echoes back …

Phenomenological Analysis Of Training Effectiveness For Multiracial Ministry Received By Black Pastors Graduating From Southern Baptist Seminaries, Timothy D. Griffin May 2024

Phenomenological Analysis Of Training Effectiveness For Multiracial Ministry Received By Black Pastors Graduating From Southern Baptist Seminaries, Timothy D. Griffin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the perception of preparedness for multicultural ministry of current black senior pastors who earned a Master of Divinity or Doctorate at one of the six Southern Baptist Seminaries, each of which can also be classified as predominantly white institutions (PWIs). The theory guiding this study was Racial Formation Theory (Omi & Winant, 2014). This theory suggests race as being a socially constructed paradigm that is manipulated by political, social, and economic forces. The researcher convened an expert panel of black ministers who are part of a conservative Baptist organization. This panel …

A Phenomenological Study Of Adult Patients With Auto-Immune Disease And Their Exposure To Adverse Childhood Experiences, Milton Louis Gonzalez May 2024

A Phenomenological Study Of Adult Patients With Auto-Immune Disease And Their Exposure To Adverse Childhood Experiences, Milton Louis Gonzalez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative phenomenological study explored and described the shared experiences of individuals impacted by an autoimmune disease and their exposure to adverse childhood experiences. The theory guiding this study was Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory, utilizing Kaiser Permanente’s Adverse Childhood Experience study as a guide to create awareness amongst physicians and mental health professionals, leading them to a more holistic approach when treating patients affected by an autoimmune disease. This was a qualitative study using Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology (TPh). The data collection methods used in the study included questionnaires, individual interviews, and document analysis. These forms of data were analyzed through …

“We Have To Fight For Change”: Intersecting And Ongoing Crises Amongst Farmworker Families Along The Monterey Bay Central Coast, Mikayla S. Feliciano May 2024

“We Have To Fight For Change”: Intersecting And Ongoing Crises Amongst Farmworker Families Along The Monterey Bay Central Coast, Mikayla S. Feliciano

Master's Projects and Capstones

This study examines the crises farmworkers are experiencing along the Monterey Bay Central Coast. It analyzes and reviews housing insecurity, deficit to basic needs, and the environmental impact of storms and pesticides exposure. In January of 2023, the central coast experienced an immense amount of rain, atmospheric rivers, and a levee break that the Salinas and Pajaro Valley communities' infrastructure could not handle. These storms caused even more financial and economic peril for the already struggling farmworkers and their children. This research aims to highlight the importance of farmworking families in the community and what social barriers they face. Information …

Expanding The Apostolic Mission: A Biblical-Theological Analysis Of Peter's Epistles As Evidence Of His Universal Apostleship Beyond The Jewish Context, Peter J. Ireland May 2024

Expanding The Apostolic Mission: A Biblical-Theological Analysis Of Peter's Epistles As Evidence Of His Universal Apostleship Beyond The Jewish Context, Peter J. Ireland

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Paul’s designation of Peter as the apostle to the Jews suggests that Peter’s mission was restricted and impacts the interpretation of his Epistles. Scholarly neglect of Peter and critical scholarship’s rejection of the Petrine Epistles’ authenticity result in the underutilization of the context of Peter’s complete life in the analysis of the Petrine Epistles. However, categorizing Peter as always being the apostle to the Jews does not fit the rest of the biblical evidence. Using a biblical-theological approach to the biblical texts supplemented by extrabiblical evidence to understand the biblical authors’ contexts while considering the passage of time, this dissertation …

Death To The Museum (As We Know It): A California Art And History Museum Designs A Different Cultural Exhibit, Caitlin Pambid May 2024

Death To The Museum (As We Know It): A California Art And History Museum Designs A Different Cultural Exhibit, Caitlin Pambid

csuglobaljournal

Museums have stuck to traditional rules of focusing interpretation only on the object, having a single exceptional curator, and top-down dissemination of information. One California museum has created a different cultural exhibit that rejects all of these pillars to create an active museum. New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU Los Gatos) recently held an exhibition titled: Reclamation: Resilience of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. Collaborating with the Muwekma Ohlone, aboriginal to the San Francisco Bay Region, this exhibit spotlights and provides a platform for the Muwekma to the surrounding Los Gatos community who may not be aware of the local indigenous …

404 Error – Gender Not Found: Lived Experiences Of Genderqueer Autistics Assigned Female At Birth, Christina-Marie J. Wright May 2024

404 Error – Gender Not Found: Lived Experiences Of Genderqueer Autistics Assigned Female At Birth, Christina-Marie J. Wright

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

While autism research has historically focused on males, increasing attention is being paid to the expression of autism spectrum disorder in cisgender girls and women. However, a significant percentage of the autistic population assigned female at birth experiences gender outside the male-female binary, and the expression of autistic traits in this population remains largely unexplored. Understanding the expression of autism in diverse populations is important for diagnostic access and support. The purpose of this study was to identify which behaviors and interests commonly ascribed to autistic individuals were demonstrated by autistic genderqueer individuals assigned female at birth. The study also …

¿Qué Lengua Hablas?: The Interaction Of Languages, Education And Identity In A Majority/Minority Sociolinguistic Setting, Luisa F. Hurtado Iglesias May 2024

¿Qué Lengua Hablas?: The Interaction Of Languages, Education And Identity In A Majority/Minority Sociolinguistic Setting, Luisa F. Hurtado Iglesias

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This thesis presents a comparative analysis of language dynamics in two distinct contexts: the Tres Fronteras region, where Spanish and Portuguese intersect, and Cauca, Colombia, where Namtrik and Spanish coexist. Through qualitative research methods including interviews and ethnographic observations, the study examines the roles of these languages in shaping social interactions, cultural identities, and community dynamics.

By exploring language use patterns, attitudes, and policies in these regions, the thesis seeks to uncover similarities and differences in the ways Spanish, Portuguese, and Namtrik influence individuals' sense of belonging and cultural expression. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of historical, social, and …

Intervening For A Better Social Life? A Comparative Analysis Of Psychological Egoism And Aristotle As Alternate Foundations For Applied Social Psychology's Aims, Samuel D. Major May 2024

Intervening For A Better Social Life? A Comparative Analysis Of Psychological Egoism And Aristotle As Alternate Foundations For Applied Social Psychology's Aims, Samuel D. Major

Theses and Dissertations

The scientific aim which distinguishes applied social psychological research from basic social psychological research is that of using social psychological theory to develop interventions meant to rectify social and practical problems in hopes of fostering a flourishing or thriving social sphere. In developing their interventions, however, many applied social psychologists have failed to consider their pre-investigatory philosophical commitments, commitments which imply the kind of flourishing social life that may come as a result of interventions rooted in them. The aim of this dissertation is to invite applied social psychologists to consider if their frequently noted, yet often unexamined, commitment to …

“Use” As A Conscious Thought: Towards A Theory Of “Use” In Autonomous Things, Gohar Khan, A Karim Feroz May 2024

“Use” As A Conscious Thought: Towards A Theory Of “Use” In Autonomous Things, Gohar Khan, A Karim Feroz

All Works

The way users perceive and use information systems artefacts has been mainly studied from the notion of behavioral beliefs, deliberate cognitive efforts, and physical actions performed by human actors to produce certain outcomes. The next generation of information systems, however, can sense, respond, and adapt to environments without necessitating similar cognitive efforts, physical contact, or explicit instructions to operate. Therefore, by leveraging theories of consciousness and technology use, this research aims to advance an alternative understanding of the "use" associated with the next generation of IS artefacts that do not require deliberate cognitive efforts, physical manipulation, or explicit instructions to …

Conceptualising And Enacting Pathways To Transformative Climate Justice: Examples From The Philippines, Justin See, Anne Shangrila Fuentes, Emma Porio, Brooke Wilmsen May 2024

Conceptualising And Enacting Pathways To Transformative Climate Justice: Examples From The Philippines, Justin See, Anne Shangrila Fuentes, Emma Porio, Brooke Wilmsen

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

Scholarship on climate change adaptation is increasingly moving from incremental responses to climate injustice towards transformative approaches that deliberately change systems to achieve just and equitable outcomes. A transformative understanding of climate justice is relatively new and evidence of how this could be achieved is in its infancy. In this paper, we conceptualise transformative climate justice as comprised of three subcomponents: (1) inclusive justice (seeking to ensure that no one, especially the most vulnerable, is left behind), (2) epistemological justice (drawing upon diverse knowledges and worldviews), and (3) restorative justice (healing and restoration of communities and the environment). We then …

Dr. John Snow And The Nineteenthcentury British Cholera Crisis, Betsy A. Maughan May 2024

Dr. John Snow And The Nineteenthcentury British Cholera Crisis, Betsy A. Maughan

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

During the nineteenth century, Britain underwent attacks from a silent, determined killer. Invisible to the naked eye, this sinister enemy invaded towns, villages and homes with unforgiving stealth and cruelty. Lives were changed forever as panic, terror, and death overtook human habitats. The sneaky menace was Asiatic cholera. Although the first devastating British attack occurred during 1831-1832, London was fortunate enough to stay out of its destructive path. Luck ran out, however, as the second assault occurred during 1848-1849, consuming a good part of the city. Dr. John Snow, English physician, anesthetist and epidemiologist, dedicated most of his life to …

Spatial Associations Of Lung Cancer Rates And Socioeconomic, Health, And Environmental Factors In Georgia, Nguyet Le, Jun Tu May 2024

Spatial Associations Of Lung Cancer Rates And Socioeconomic, Health, And Environmental Factors In Georgia, Nguyet Le, Jun Tu

Symposium of Student Scholars

According to CDC, Lung and Bronchus Cancer ranks the highest by the rate of cancer deaths among different types of cancers in the United States with the rate of 31.8 per 100 thousand people, and also for Georgia with the rate of 33.4 per 100 thousand people. Thus, to reduce the death rate of lung cancer, it is quite important and urgent to understand its risk factors. Smoking and inhaling radon are among the top risk factors of lung cancer for individuals. The socioeconomic, health, and environmental characteristics of communities might be also related to the likelihood of getting …

Analyzing Artwork Along The Atlanta Beltline, Cameron Platto

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Atlanta Beltline is an evolving project that has blossomed in Atlanta, and not only serves as a source of recreation but also to connect different surrounding communities. More specifically, the vast amount of artwork along the Atlanta Beltline is a clear representation of how welcoming and supportive of others the communities are. This research recorded every piece of artwork along the Atlanta Beltline on the Eastside segment. A photograph was taken for each piece of artwork along. It was followed by recording various attributes of each piece of artwork, such as date, time, location, direction, and whether the artwork …

Generating Channel Morphology Data Through Arcgis Pro, Ethan Manigbas

Symposium of Student Scholars

River cross-sections are often extracted using field surveys at measured intervals. This field-oriented approach allows for a tangible relationship between the data and its collector but at the expense of finance, time, labor, and potentially the environment. With the advancement of geospatial tools, such data can be found online, extracted, and even analyzed with contemporary Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a completely virtual setting, transcending the need for fieldwork in select project topics. We tested this approach with the help of ArcGIS Pro software on the Vishnu Springs headwater stream located in the Western Illinois region of the Upper Mississippi …

Taking ‘Third World’ Lives Seriously: Decolonising Global Health Governance To Promote Health Capabilities In The Global South, Uchechukwu Ngwaba May 2024

Taking ‘Third World’ Lives Seriously: Decolonising Global Health Governance To Promote Health Capabilities In The Global South, Uchechukwu Ngwaba

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Behind glib claims of universalism in global health, evidenced by the push for universal health coverage in the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs), lies an uncomfortable truth about the unequal, uneven and broken system of the existing framework for global health governance. A situation made more evident by the behaviour of powerful states of the Global North at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic through the hoarding of vaccines, refusal to accommodate waivers to the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) regime to allow cheaper versions of the Covid-19 vaccines to be manufactured for the Global South and the …

Intergenerational Transmissions Of Body Image And Eating Issues: An Analysis Of Maternal And Interpersonal Socialization From College-Age Women, Elena Kae Cotter May 2024

Intergenerational Transmissions Of Body Image And Eating Issues: An Analysis Of Maternal And Interpersonal Socialization From College-Age Women, Elena Kae Cotter

Theses and Dissertations

Negative body image affects countless young American women and can lead to serious eating concerns if overlooked. A young girl may develop negative body image if she is pressured to fit into dominant social appearance standards perpetuated by the media and social groups such as her friends, peers, and family, especially her mother. One relationship that remains underexplored is that between mothers and daughters, specifically regarding young adult women and their retrospective thoughts on their mothers’ influence on their self-presentation at a young age. This study uses qualitative interviews and content analysis of transcribed interview texts, focusing on maternal influence …

Exploring Security Strategies To Enable The Adoption Of Internet Of Things Devices In The Manufacturing Sector, Joy Chamoun May 2024

Exploring Security Strategies To Enable The Adoption Of Internet Of Things Devices In The Manufacturing Sector, Joy Chamoun

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many information technology (IT) leaders lack the strategies to protect IoT devices from information security threats in the manufacturing sector, which puts IoT devices and modern manufacturing systems at risk of external threats and introduces security risks to organizations and workers. Grounded in the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to determine strategies that IT leaders use to implement security for IoT devices in the manufacturing sector. The participants were three IT leaders from three separate manufacturing facilities in the Los Angeles area of the United States. The data were collected from semistructured …

From Repatriation To Cooperation: Gustaf Nordenskiold's Mesa Verde Collection, David M. Barnes May 2024

From Repatriation To Cooperation: Gustaf Nordenskiold's Mesa Verde Collection, David M. Barnes

Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal

Though Swedish explorer and scientist Gustaf Nordenskiöld was far from the first individual to excavate at what is now Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, reports and rumors that a foreigner was shipping antiquities and human remains excavated at Mesa Verde out of the country sent some American citizens into an uproar. The controversy led to Nordenskiöld's arrest and the seizure of his 1400-plus pound Mesa Verde collection, but charges were dropped when it was later discovered that he broke no laws at the time by digging on American public land. More than 100 years have passed since Nordenskiöld shipped …
