Black Appalachian Families, Arthur J. Cox May 1983

Black Appalachian Families, Arthur J. Cox

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The black family in America has been subjected to social change more than the family of any other racial or ethnic group. An overview of its adjustment through successive crises of African transplantation, slavery, sudden emancipation, migration to cities and the vicissitudes of second-class citizenship help in understanding the black family's contemporary forms. The black family of Appalachia faces yet another problem - (INVISIBILITY)

Factors Related To The Migration Preferences Of Utah's 1980 High School Seniors, A. John Lacognata

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examines the personal migration preferences of Utah high school seniors in 1980 and their relationship to perceived parental preferences, family status, length of residence, religion, sex, and type of residence. A focal area of the thesis is an examination of the consistency between personal preferences and preferences of parents as perceived by the youth. The primary data used for this study came from a sample survey of 1980 high school seniors who were selected using a stratified sampling technique. Cross-tabulations were used with chi square to test for significance of association.

The results of this study suggest that …

Achieving A Concensus On Dog Control Strategies: A Brief Primer, D. B. Wilkins Jan 1983

Achieving A Concensus On Dog Control Strategies: A Brief Primer, D. B. Wilkins

Pets Collection

The welfare arguments surrounding dog ownership may not stimulate the same passionate fervor as those relating to the use of animals in experiments, factory farming, or the hunting of live animals with hounds, but nevertheless, they are matters of real concern to most welfare organizations. The most serious problems are caused through irresponsible ownership, which leads to overbreeding and the inevitable consequence of large numbers

The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood Jan 1983

The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood

Animal Welfare Collection

The treatment of animals was surveyed in 53 families in which child abuse had occurred. Patterns of pet ownership, attitudes towards pets and quality of veterinary care did not differ greatly from comparable data from the general public. However, abuse of pets by a family member had taken place in 60 percent of the families. The families in which animal abuse was indicated tended to have younger pets, lower levels of veterinary care and more conflicts over care than non-abusive families in the study. There were several parallels between the treatment of pets and the treatment of animals within child-abusing …

[Review Of] Marcienne Rocard, Les Fils Du Soleil: La Minorite; Mexicaine A Travers La Litterature Des Etats Unis, Sergio D. Elizondo

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The first major work of its kind published in France by an Americanist, Les Fils du Soleil (The Children of the Sun: The Mexican Minority as Seen Through the Literature of the United States) deserves recognition as a historical landmark and French contribution to the study of the Chicano. Its thorough treatment of the subject surpasses in thematic outreach all previously published works.

[Review Of] Anne Curtenius Roosevelt And James G. E. Smith, Eds., The Ancestors: Native Artisans Of The Americas, Gretchen M. Bataille

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The Ancestors: Native Artisans of the Americas is an illustrated catalog produced for a 1979 exhibition of the Museum of the American Indian which had as its purpose the exploration of the interrelationships between the arts and the cultures which produce them. This catlog [catalog] is refreshing in its thoroughness and in the way the artwork is integrated with the text. Exhibition catalogs often begin with a scholarly introduction and follow with hundreds of photographs of museum pieces only briefly identified. By contrast, The Ancestors begins with a series of color plates and follows with seven specific chapters on the …

A Response To "Our Own Dogs", Alice A. Deck Jan 1983

A Response To "Our Own Dogs", Alice A. Deck

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In contemporary American Indian songs and stories the Iroquois, Shawnee, and Lakota all voice a rueful hindsight over the hereditary "Great Mistake," or the friendship and kindness which their naive, trusting ancestors extended to the pilgrims on the Mayflower.
