[Review Of] Carol Munday Lawrence, Producer. Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer (Film), Charles C. Irby
[Review Of] Carol Munday Lawrence, Producer. Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer (Film), Charles C. Irby
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Oscar Micheaux, Film Pioneer is one of seven films in the "Were You There" series produced by Carol Lawrence (the others include The Black West, The Cotton Club, The Facts of Life, Portrait of Two Artists, Sports Profile, and When the Animals Talked). This film's story revolves around Bee Freeman's (the Sepia Mae West) and Lorenzo Tucker's (the black Valentino) recollections of their relationships with Micheaux and their perceptions of his character. Danny Glover plays the role of Oscar Micheaux, Richard Harder is shown as the young Lorenzo Tucker, and Janice Morgan portrays the vamp that was Bee Freeman in …

[Review Of] Ken Harrison, Producer. The Last Of The Caddoes (Film), David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Several staff members and students in anthropology and Indian Studies programs at Iowa State University had the opportunity to view the film, The Last of the Caddoes, during the spring of 1984. The University's Media Resource Center had obtained the film on approval and sought our advice as to whether it should be purchased for on campus classroom use and for rental to interest groups off campus. The film came with a respectable-looking pedigree: it was based on a short story by William Humphrey, an author of considerable repute in Texas; it was produced by Ken Harrison with funding from …

Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog
Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The poem prefaces Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony, the story of a young American Indian who regains the wholeness and meaning of his life by rediscovering his ancient tribal roots and rituals.[1] It is a story of the American Southwest, especially the Pueblo-Laguna people. Anyone even vaguely familiar with American Indian culture knows that the groups were originally as different from each other as modern-day Swedes are from Albanians or Catalans, if not more so. There were more than 2,000 independent culture groups in Columbus's time, and they spoke 500 different languages belonging to fifty distinct language groups, some as …

[Review Of] Vine Deloria, Jr., And Clifford M. Lytle. American Indians. American Justice, Gretchen M. Bataille
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Two attorneys, both professors of political science, have written this book on American Indians and the American legal system to clarify American Indian people's place vis-a-vis the United States system of justice. The first chapter provides a much-needed historical context for the current situations. The authors trace the rather convoluted pattern of Indian-U.S. relationships from first contact with the "great white father" through the treaty system, allotment, the Indian Reorganization Act, termination policies, and self-determination, evaluating the malign or benign effects of several presidents. Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon had positive influences on legislation focusing on American Indians; …
Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren
Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Recent works by students of contemporary ritual (or "ritologists," as Ronald Grimes calls them) supports the notion that ritual is an important variable not just in tribal culture but also in modern industrial culture. I'm referring to studies that have been undertaken by such ardent ritual exegetes as Roy Rappaport, Barbara Myerhoff, Ronald Grimes, Robert Bocock, Sally Falk Moore, and Richard Schechner. Grimes has begun the important work of consolidating research on ritual; he has taken a field of scholarship which was doggedly parochial and helped to expand it into a protoscience of its own. (1) The work of these …
Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry, Silvester J. Brito
Change In American Indian World Views Illustrated By Oral Narratives And Contemporary Poetry, Silvester J. Brito
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Unlike other ethnic groups, American Indians had little to celebrate during the bicentennial year in 1976. Other ethnic groups, with the exception of blacks and Mexican Americans, came to America to find a better way of life.[1] In contrast, few American Indians have left this country in search of a better life elsewhere. Hence, being an oppressed minority in a society governed by Western thought and values, Indians can only lament the loss of their rights to live and govern their lives according to particular religious, cultural, and social values, for they have been forced to change world views and …

Abstracts From The Twelfth Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In an attempt to record a sense of the formal sessions of the 1984 Conference, we asked the Chairs to assemble abstracts and discussant comments for their sessions. Although we are pleased with a response greater than in 1983, we are aiming for one hundred percent in 1985.

[Review Of] Richard J. Fapso. Norwegians In Wisconsin, Marilyn Meisenheimer
[Review Of] Richard J. Fapso. Norwegians In Wisconsin, Marilyn Meisenheimer
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
The pamphlet opens with a description of Norway, the land and its agricultural economy, the increased population that resulted from the industrial revolution, and the development of a cash economy. Three pages of photographs and a map of land use in Norway supplement this section. The fixed classes of the agricultural system included a large number of border or freeholders and husbands or cotters who considered themselves free but who were often landless despite their free status. In 1825, Norwegian migration to America began, by 1 835 it had picked up speed, and by 1860 nearly 70,000 Norwegians had emigrated …
[Review Of] Ken Goodwin. Understanding African Poetry: A Study Of Ten Poets, Alice A. Deck
[Review Of] Ken Goodwin. Understanding African Poetry: A Study Of Ten Poets, Alice A. Deck
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Understanding African Poetry is a valuable asset to anyone interested in African anglophone poetry. Goodwin offers textual analysis, evaluation, and supplementary contextual information on each of the ten poets he chose to discuss. Much of the analysis shows a keen insight and the contextual commentary is quite informative. However, Goodwin's evaluation reflects his bias towards British and white American concepts of what constitutes "good" poetry.

[Review Of] Arnoldo De Ledn. The Tejano Community, 1836 - 1900, Wolfgang Binder
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
De León's pioneering effort is a most welcome volume to Chicano Studies. The historian's findings in the history of the Mexicans in Texas during most of the last century present a major addition to our knowledge of how agrarian Tejanos lived from the Texas Revolution to the turn of the century.

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill
Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …

Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen
The Bridge
This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish
The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Angler's Angle is an ethnographic (cultural description) of the bass fishermen . The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: (1) to present a better understanding of the ethnographic process and its usefulness as a too l within the social sciences, and (2) to illustrate this usefulness by the study of a cultural scene that often goes unnoticed in our Western society. An examination in Chapter 1 on the background of cultural studies (undertaken for the most part to de scribe non-Western societies), sets the tone for the use of ethnography today. Research on sub-cultures within our own society is …
