Safety With Strangers : A Preventive Program For Deaf Children, Christy Rae Mcintyre Jan 1984

Safety With Strangers : A Preventive Program For Deaf Children, Christy Rae Mcintyre

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present study addresses two major issues . First, the need for children to develop the skills necessary t o prevent themselves fro m being molested. Second, the need for hearing impaired children to receive the same information, coping s kills, and defense strategies as their hearing counterparts. The "Safety with Strangers slide series was presented in classrooms of hearing impaired students at both the middle school level and elementary school level. Program trainers gave students information regarding stranger approaches, demonstrated the safe, appropriate (role-modeling) and gave the children opportunities to practice these safe, appropriate behaviors (behavioral rehearsal). A Midsummer Day, Amy R. Thrall Jan 1984

A Midsummer Day, Amy R. Thrall

The Bridge

"Where was Chris?; Why didn't he hurry?" He knew Greta was to be the overseer of the dinner. It was Midsummer's Day; she had to be in Linden by nine o'clock to organize the work in the kitchen. The four girls, up since dawn, harassed her with questions; too young to understand that "sol er oppe" meant "sun is up," signifying a blessing to the earth in bringing life to the crops and flowers. The sun doesn't set in Denmark on June 24th until eleven at night and rises at two in the morning. Having lived through the long and …

Time Use By Small Farm Families In Southwest Virginia: An Approach For The Inclusion Of Household In Farming Systems Research And Extension, John S. Caldwell, Michael French Smith, Vicki Karagianis, Ruth D. Harris

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this paper we first present an overview of Farming Systems Research and Extension (FSR/E), contrasting the importance placed on the household in the FSRIE conceptual framework with the lack of explicit attention given it in FSR/E methodology. An initial 47-farm survey suggested that female household members play key roles in intensive crop production and off-farm income generation. A time allocation study during May-October, 1982, investigated the roles of female and male household heads and working age children in a representative 10-farm subsample. Results indicated greater women's contributions to livestock-related production activities than originally hypothesized and reduced time spent by …

Talking With Young Children About Social Ideas, Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Anna Sargent Russell

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

During the early childhood years, children’s understanding of many social and moral issues undergoes immense changes. We became interested in learning more about these changes and supporting them through our laboratory preschool curriculum. One major change, for example, is that children come to classify themselves and others into sex, age, and kinship categories and to learn social role expectations. Children also show greatly deepened understanding of such moral issues as fair sharing, obedience, authority, and friendship.

These areas of development are part of what can be called social cognition, or “children’s understanding of social behavior—what children think about their own …

In Favor Of Capital Punishment: A Blending Of Philosophical Perspectives, James Charles Donnelly Oct 1983

In Favor Of Capital Punishment: A Blending Of Philosophical Perspectives, James Charles Donnelly

Institute for the Humanities Theses

There has been little intellectual support for the average American's view of the proper relationship between L' crime and punishment. This text is an effort to philosophically define and defend this view. Chapters one and two deal with teleological theories and justification for systems and rules of practices. I first discuss the historical relationship of man to the state, showing the necessity of and providing a basis for civil authority and law and showing both to be based on social utility. This accomplished, a teleological justification of a system of punishment is presented. Chapter three discusses retribution as the deontological …

Dryland Agriculture: Sociology, J. Allen Williams Jr., Lynn K. White, David R. Johnson May 1983

Dryland Agriculture: Sociology, J. Allen Williams Jr., Lynn K. White, David R. Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The physical environment of the Great Plains region in the USA is unique to the nation. It presents a set of climate and land conditions so extreme that for many years it was known as the "great American desert." As late as 1823, Major Long of the Army Engineers reported that most of the land between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains "is almost wholly unfit for cultivation, and of course uninhabitable by a people depending on agriculture for their subsistence." Today, by adapting techniques to fit a semiarid location and through the development of new technologies, the Great …

The Creationist Movement: Science, Religion And Ideology, George M. Bevins Apr 1983

The Creationist Movement: Science, Religion And Ideology, George M. Bevins

Masters Theses

A sample of literature produced by participants in the "creationist movement" is examined in an effort to delineate the ideology of the movement. This ideology is seen as a repertoire of images of science, evolution and society which is used by creationists in their efforts to propagate their movement. Based on this literature, an "ideological substructure of belief" within the creationist movement is described, consisting of their belief in a created normative order in the world and of their fear that this order is breaking down. It is argued that the various particular aspects of the creationists' social ideology, their …
