The Vanguard
A group of four volunteers from the United States is living . in Jalapa, Nicaragua, as part of a nonviolent program entitled, "Witness for Peace." Jalapa, near the northern border of Nicaragua with Honduras has been the site of attacks by the anti-Nicaraguan "contras" forces.
The Witness for Peace program has grown out of the experience of some North Americans who have visited Nicaragua since the Sandinista revolution in 1979. The group wants to speak out and act against the toll that the ongoing war is taking in human lives.

Achieving A Concensus On Dog Control Strategies: A Brief Primer, D. B. Wilkins
Achieving A Concensus On Dog Control Strategies: A Brief Primer, D. B. Wilkins
Pets Collection
The welfare arguments surrounding dog ownership may not stimulate the same passionate fervor as those relating to the use of animals in experiments, factory farming, or the hunting of live animals with hounds, but nevertheless, they are matters of real concern to most welfare organizations. The most serious problems are caused through irresponsible ownership, which leads to overbreeding and the inevitable consequence of large numbers
Humane Ethics And Animal Rights, Michael W. Fox
Humane Ethics And Animal Rights, Michael W. Fox
Animal Welfare Collection
While the primary goal of the animal welfare movement is to eliminate suffering in those animal species that are exploited by humans, this goal, although exemplary, is narrow sighted. Notwithstanding the practical difficulties of proving animal suffering, especially psychological, suffering could conceivably be eliminated, as in confined farm animals, through the use of tranquilizers, or even brain surgery. A goose being made to eat compulsively, following selective partial destruction or stimulation of its brain to cause hypertrophy of its liver for the liver pate trade, may not suffer. But it is being harmed. Likewise, to selective breed a farm animal, …
The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood
The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood
Animal Welfare Collection
The treatment of animals was surveyed in 53 families in which child abuse had occurred. Patterns of pet ownership, attitudes towards pets and quality of veterinary care did not differ greatly from comparable data from the general public. However, abuse of pets by a family member had taken place in 60 percent of the families. The families in which animal abuse was indicated tended to have younger pets, lower levels of veterinary care and more conflicts over care than non-abusive families in the study. There were several parallels between the treatment of pets and the treatment of animals within child-abusing …
Alternatives To Animal Experimentation, Steven M. Niemi
Alternatives To Animal Experimentation, Steven M. Niemi
Experimentation Collection
Alternatives to animal experimentation are highly touted today by animal welfare advocates. Their campaign for adoption of alternatives has caused much discussion and debate within and outside of the biomedical community. The purpose of this paper was to examine the controversy and assess the more common alternatives, including the bacterial mutagenicity assay or Ames test, cell culture, and mathematical models for toxicity prediction. Safety testing of chemicals is the most promising of the fields for alternatives where laboratory animals are used, and incorporation of alternatives with live-animal assays is increasing. However, due to limitations of alternatives in use currently, there …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In contemporary American Indian songs and stories the Iroquois, Shawnee, and Lakota all voice a rueful hindsight over the hereditary "Great Mistake," or the friendship and kindness which their naive, trusting ancestors extended to the pilgrims on the Mayflower.

Jens Kjar: From Horsens To Atlantic, Signe Nielsen Betsinger
The Bridge
Of course things are coming back. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. Prosperity always has followed depression." 1 These encouraging words were spoken by Jens Kjar in Atlantic, Iowa, over twenty-five years ago to a newspaper reporter who was as intrigued by this man as I am. Who was Jens Kjar? How did I come to know about him? And why do I write about him today?

La Coopérative De Markala: Une Nouvelle Approche Des Rôles Economiques Traditionnaux, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam
Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Working Women's Forum: Organizing For Credit And Change, Marty Chen
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of SEEDs tells the story of how the Working Women's Forum came into being in Madras, India and how it has brought together more than 13,000 poor, urban women around the issue of credit. It also describes how the Forum has not only provided its members with access to funds, but has expanded to include support services such as child care, education, health, and family planning and how the sense of strength and purpose that has grown up among the members is helping them to tackle the political and social problems that affect their lives.
Punishment, Kent Greenawalt
Punishment, Kent Greenawalt
Faculty Scholarship
Although punishment has been a crucial feature of every legal system, widespread disagreement exists over the moral principles that can justify its imposition. One fundamental question is why (and whether) the social institution of punishment is warranted. A second question concerns the necessary conditions for punishment in particular cases. A third relates to the degree of severity that is appropriate for particular offenses and offenders. Debates about punishment are important in their own right, but they also raise more general problems about the proper standards for evaluating social practices.
The main part of this theoretical overview of the subject of …

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott
The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The current study is grounded in the psychological approaches to the mechanics of communication, somewhere between cybernetics and attribution.
The integration of information available in different channels is the focus of the present study. To what extent do people rely on the different channels of communication to assign meaning to their world? More specifically, what is the relative importance of the verbal and nonverbal channels of communication in the meaning creation process?
This question of channel reliance is of central import to the study of the role of information in social/psychological systems. If it can be assumed that meaning is …

Budgeting For Nebraska Local Governments, John W. Swain

Budgeting is a complex set of activities. To those unfamiliar with its details, it is a mysterious rite conducted annually, and even those familiar with the process give a multitude of definitions. The simplest definition is that budgeting involves the acquisition and allocation of resources.

Fostering The Adolescent: Trainer's Manual, Diana Kraus

Fostering the Adolescent is designed as a curriculum to meet the needs of foster parents who have (or soon will have) adolescent foster children in their homes. Trainers will get to know the parents in their groups and use some flexibility in meeting the needs of those parents. The commitment made by the Foster Parent Training Project is one of providing parents with materials and training that will be helpful to them in fostering their adolescents. The curriculum is designed in ten separate segments, and those segments or sessions may be delivered in any sequence helpful to both the parents …
Clear Writing For Public Administrators: A Refresher Workshop, Richard Streckfuss
Clear Writing For Public Administrators: A Refresher Workshop, Richard Streckfuss
Publications
Since you have been writing for years and since you have had many hours of classroom instruction in writing, you have a right to be skeptical about a writing workshop. What can be accomplished in a few hours that could not be accomplished in the preceding hundreds?
That question has been the guiding principle behind this material. The most promising approach seemed to lie in comparing the work of professional writers with amateurs. To this end, the writing of a dozen public administrators was compared to the writing of authors published in such works as Harper's, Smithsonian, INC, Nation's Business, …
