Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry Jan 1994

Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry

Theses : Honours

Public subsidisation of child care has increased steadily over it's 20 year history, corresponding with increases in the rate of labour force participation of mothers. This research seeks to determine if labour force participation is driven by provision of child care or if the supply of child care is driven by demand of Mothers participating in the labour force. Much of the Australian research of mothers' labour force participation does not take account for the provision or use of child care, yet all find the presence of children in the family as having a major impact on the labour force …

A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees Jan 1994

A Comparative Analysis Of Perceptions Of Land Between Environmentalists And Aboriginal Peoples, Rowan Greenlees

Theses : Honours

"We believe the same thing, regarding land, as the Aboriginals." This thesis has been undertaken to investigate the above statement, which I have frequently heard from environmentalists in informal conversation with them. To investigate this statement requires an analysis of all its possible meanings and underlying assumptions, and a comparison with the beliefs and perceptions regarding land that Aboriginal peoples uphold. Emphasis has been given to the word "same", as the understandings of this: word will indicate how this statement needs to be qualified. As a person who has interests in both environmental issues and those that concern indigenous people, …

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald Jan 1994

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the well-being of 283 four to sixteen-year-old intercountry adopted (ICA) children in general and in relation to two specific adoption variables. The sample represented 80% of the estimated 4-16 year old ICA population of Western Australia (W A). Well-being was defined in terms of competence, happiness, health and problem behaviours. The primary source of information was Achenbach's parent reported Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) as used by the Western Australian Child Health Survey (WACHS). Bowlby's attachment theory provided the theoretical framework for the prediction that adoption after the age of 6 months, and the experience of adversity …

A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt Jan 1994

A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Yirra is a residential treatment program for young people who are experiencing problems associated with their substance use. The design of this program was influenced both by consultation with other youth services, and by current literature and theories regarding the most effective approaches to delivery of youth substance use services. Yirra has been in operation since February, 1992, and to date has not been formally evaluated. This research represents the first stage of evaluation of Yirra. The Phenomenological approach to enquiry was aimed at gaining some understanding of the experience of being at Yirra, from the perspective of the young …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Bereavement Service: An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Service Consumers And Providers, Ruth Marquis Jan 1994

A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Bereavement Service: An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Service Consumers And Providers, Ruth Marquis

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Human service evaluation has become an important consideration in service delivery due to an increased demand for accountability by funding bodies. Time constraints, financial constraints and political interests, however, influence the implementation and outcomes of evaluation projects. As a result, quantitative methods are most frequently used. Information obtained as the result of quantitative studies which are politically expedient may present a superficial view of a program and overlook the fundamental issues of program delivery which are important to participants. Identification of the valued aspects of program involvement and areas of unmet need from participants' perspectives may remain unknown as a …

Women In Leadership Program 1993: National Conference: Women's Voices: Challenging For The Future, Pauline Carroll (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The Women in Leadership Program is an exciting development initiative that, over a three year period, has had a visible effect on attitudes towards leadership and the role of women in organisations. As part of the program, through the generous funding support of the Commonwealth Staff Development Fund, the goodwill of staff and the commitment of women examining the leadership challenges facing Australian society today, Edith Cowan University has hosted a National Women in Leadership Conference for the past two years. This Conference provides an ongoing opportunity for women from varied and diverse roles to contribute to our knowledge and …

Untying The Knot: A Scoialist-Feminist Analysis Of The Social Construction Of Care: Social Research And Development Monograph No. 7, Dani Stehlik Jan 1993

Untying The Knot: A Scoialist-Feminist Analysis Of The Social Construction Of Care: Social Research And Development Monograph No. 7, Dani Stehlik

Research outputs pre 2011

As the Australian population ages, policy and human service practice in the field of aged care assumes an increasingly important and relevant position. In this monograph I argue that women who are providing care for aged spouses, parents or relatives in their (or their carer's) own homes, are doing essential, hard and stressful work, work which is unpaid and often unacknowledged, and that the Australian welfare system is now structured around the invisible unpaid labour of such women. The rhetoric of Australian political parties is focussing more and more on the notion of an ideal' family' and 'community' and a …

Not Guest Speakers But Peer Tutors: The Role Of Adoptive Parent Organisations In The Western Australian Preparation For Adoptive Parenthood Education Programme, Maureen Anne Roberts Jan 1993

Not Guest Speakers But Peer Tutors: The Role Of Adoptive Parent Organisations In The Western Australian Preparation For Adoptive Parenthood Education Programme, Maureen Anne Roberts

Theses : Honours

This study was undertaken as a partial requirement for a Bachelor of Health Science (Health Education) Honours. It examines the role of two Western Australian adoptive parent organisations, Australia for Children Society (AFC), and the Adoptive Parents Association (APA), as peer tutors within a Preparation for Adoptive Parenthood Education Programme (PAPEP). The sample consisted of one group which attended a workshop held by AFC and one group which attended a workshop by APA as part of the PAPEP. Measurements of interactions between Prospective Adoptive Parents (PAPs) and between PAPs and workshop presenters were made through observations. PAPs' satisfaction with the …

The Population Turnaround: A Case Study Of The Shire Of Toodyay, Matthew A. Tonts Jan 1993

The Population Turnaround: A Case Study Of The Shire Of Toodyay, Matthew A. Tonts

Theses : Honours

During the 1970's a number of Australia's rural municipalities began to counter the long term pattern of population decline. This thesis provides empirical evidence of these changes within Western Australia and investigates the reasons for the turnaround. To develop this, a case-study examination has been made of the Shire of Toodyay in an effort to ascertain the circumstances surrounding households decisions to migrate into rural districts. This study reveals that the newcomer households exhibit a diverse range of characteristics and conform to no clear stereotypical groupings. Rather1 it appears that those who have made the transition have done so in …

The Effect Of Assigning Specific Roles In Science Groups On The Gender Behaviour Of Primary School Children, Janet F. Bant

Theses : Honours

This thesis reports on an investigation into the effects on gender behaviour of assigning specific roles (Manager, Tracker, Recorder, Communicator) to primary aged members of a cooperative learning group in science. The study was: carried out in a Year 4 and a Year 5 classroom in a Perth primary school. Both classes used a six lesson programme on a physical science topic prepared by the researcher and taught by the classroom teacher. The target subjects were randomly chosen from students meeting certain criteria defined by the researcher. All other subjects were allocated to either single- or mixed-gender groups of four. …

Place-Identity And Homelessness : The Restorative Nature Of The Home, Marie Sadkowski Jan 1993

Place-Identity And Homelessness : The Restorative Nature Of The Home, Marie Sadkowski

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research aims to address deficiencies in the Place-Identity literature and establish whether the home is a central and mediating environment within this theory. An exploration of the association between homelessness and Place-Identity provides a vehicle for clarifying the psychological role of the home and in doing so an increased awareness of this social problem is promoted. Korpela's (1989) and Kaplan's (1983) theories on place, accentuating active self-regulatory mechanisms and restorative environments, act as a catalyst and provide a solid foundation for this current research. The extensive literature on the home highlights the different conceptions that abound and the lack …

Someone's Daughter, Someone's Worker, Someone's Girlfriend, Someone's Wife: Young Women And Multiple Transitions, Jennie Buchanan Jan 1992

Someone's Daughter, Someone's Worker, Someone's Girlfriend, Someone's Wife: Young Women And Multiple Transitions, Jennie Buchanan

Theses : Honours

Although obviously involved in the life of their communities, young women have been largely overlooked in youth studies specifically and sociological research in general. Where young women are mentioned in the literature they are discussed using theories and frameworks designed to explain young men's position. It is assumed within these studies that somehow one's gender has little impact on their social situation. Clearly traditional theoretical approaches to the study of youth do not take into account the multiple transitions experienced by young women. This thesis sets out to question existing literature in youth studies. The notion that youth is a …

Exploring Seniors Perceptions Of Crime: A Report Of A Social Survey Conducted In The City Of Nedlands, Diana Whyte, David Wiles, Tessa Tarrant Jan 1991

Exploring Seniors Perceptions Of Crime: A Report Of A Social Survey Conducted In The City Of Nedlands, Diana Whyte, David Wiles, Tessa Tarrant

Research outputs pre 2011

In this exploratory survey we investigated the perceptions of, and fear of crime in elderly persons. Interviews were conducted with eighteen elderly residents of the City of Nedlands, an age-heterogeneous community which enjoys a high socio-economic status. Due to the small number of people interviewed the survey is qualitative in character but reflects the perceptions of a particular segment of metropolitan elderly persons. It was shown that the participants consider that there is mere crime, of a more serious and threatening nature, in present times than there was fifty years age. There was no indication of fear of becoming victims …

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King Jan 1991

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King

Research outputs pre 2011

An Investigation into the identification of indicators of quality care for outside school hours was undertaken.

Data was derived from a survey of 252 parents with children currently attending after school care in W.A., and compared with the indicators of quality developed by the Joint Review of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Commonwealth Public Service Board on Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care and Adventure Playgrounds. Although parents identified specific indicators of quality care, the findings were consistent with those of the Review.

Comparing these findings with the extensive current research on pre-school care indicators of quality, suggested …

Victorian Ideology And The Discourse Of Gender In Thomas Hardy's The Woodlanders And The Return Of The Native, Juliana Payne Jan 1991

Victorian Ideology And The Discourse Of Gender In Thomas Hardy's The Woodlanders And The Return Of The Native, Juliana Payne

Theses : Honours

This analysis will focus on the perceived harmony or disjunction between Hardy's representation of women in his fiction, and the middle class ideologies of gender difference and sexuality during what is referred to as the Victorian period, roughly the 1840s to the 1880s. The parameters of the dominant middle class ideology are established, as certain ideas will be held to be predominant or widely accepted at a given time. The aim of this thesis is to ascertain to what extent Hardy subverts the dominant ideology, and how he is involved in contesting the conventional contemporary representations of women. Part of …

An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Swan-Canning Fishery In Western Australia, 1697-1837, Paul R. Weaver Jan 1991

An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Swan-Canning Fishery In Western Australia, 1697-1837, Paul R. Weaver

Theses : Honours

The study takes a multidisciplinary approach by examining historical and contemporary scientific literature in order to determine the degree of intercultural competition which took place between Aborigines and Europeans for the native food resources which were associated with the Swan-Canning estuarine system, which is located in the south west of Western Australia, at approximately longitude 116" E. and latitude 32" S. The 1697-1827 time frame of the study, covers all the documented pre-colonial European visits to the fishery environs and also incorporates the first decade of the British colonisation process at the Swan River, which can be said to have …

Quality Of Life Issues In Residential Services For Elderly People : Perceptions Of Service Providers, Val Roche Jan 1990

Quality Of Life Issues In Residential Services For Elderly People : Perceptions Of Service Providers, Val Roche

Research outputs pre 2011

The report contains feedback from a study undertaken by students enrolled in the Residential Care Unit, a part of the A.D.A. Working with the Aged course. The subject for study was "Quality of life in residential services for elderly people. This was seen as an important area for investigation because the number of elderly people will increase to 15 per cent of Australia's population by the year 2021, and it is likely that even with more community support services, some people will need residential care...

Advocate Or Adversary: The Declining Membership Of Young People In Unions, Dave Palmer Jan 1990

Advocate Or Adversary: The Declining Membership Of Young People In Unions, Dave Palmer

Theses : Honours

Recent figures show that participation of young workers between the ages of 15-24 in trade unions is by far the lowest of all age groups. Of 1.5 million young workers in this age category only one third are unionised. Not only is membership low but it is also fast declining. While there has been some discussion and debate over the reasons for this decline, few of the more popular explanations have been comprehensively and critically examined. These explanations include: i) dramatic changes in the world of work over the past twenty years ii) poor images of unions and a lack …

The Process Of Smoking Acquisition Among Girls And Boys (Year 8) At Balga Senior High School, Sharon Mcbride Jan 1990

The Process Of Smoking Acquisition Among Girls And Boys (Year 8) At Balga Senior High School, Sharon Mcbride

Theses : Honours

Many smokers acquire their habit during adolescence, largely because of social forces experienced by people in that age group. In Australia, more girls than boys are smoking, and an increasing number of women are contracting diseases associated with smoking. More women are dying from Lung Cancer and female smokers make themselves vulnerable to a range of disorders related to fertility and pregnancy. The fact that more girls are taking up regular smoking has become an important health concern. This study explores gender related differences in smoking acquisition among a sample population of one hundred and six year eight students attending …

Discrepancy In Attitudes To Australia Between Educated And Non/Low-Educated Lebanese Immigrants, Abrahim W. Ata Jan 1982

Discrepancy In Attitudes To Australia Between Educated And Non/Low-Educated Lebanese Immigrants, Abrahim W. Ata

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Educational experience prior to immigration usually influences the overall ability to adjust in a new culture, including formulation of attitudes, perception and indeed the ability to acquire a new language. The latter in particular can serve quite accurately in determining the degree of acculturation and a potentially successful interaction with the host culture.

Indeed, an attainment of a high level of education (including the acquisition of a new language) does not imply a complete cultural integration. One can, however, safely state that the Lebanese immigrants who have attained a high level of education are better adjusted, more easily accepted by …

A Hypothesis : (Lebanese) Migrants With High Educational/Professional Qualifications Sense More Discrimination By Australians Than Other Lebanese Groups, A. W. Ata Jan 1980

A Hypothesis : (Lebanese) Migrants With High Educational/Professional Qualifications Sense More Discrimination By Australians Than Other Lebanese Groups, A. W. Ata

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The hypothesis forms part of a thesis entitled, 'The Lebanese Community in Melbourne' which was completed in January 1979 and submitted to the University of Melbourne. The Lebanese minority in Australia is perhaps one of very few national minorities which have not been studied in any form: as yet, no reseach has been carried out in a systematic and methodical manner. The thesis is thus intended to examine the structure of the Lebanese community as an autonomous ethnic group, the distinctive features which make it different from other ethnic groups, and the extent of its acculturation in Australian society. In …
