Ethnic Studies In Academe: Challenges And Prospects For The 21st Century. Naes Plenary Session , Kansas City,1995 Missouri, March 19, 1994, Jesse M. Vazquez, Evelyn Hu-Dehart, Rhett Jones, Robert Perry, Miguel Carranza

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The primary intent of organizing the plenary that follows was to engage a number of dedicated and experienced ethnic studies scholar-activists in a focused conversation on the current state of ethnic studies in the academy. At this point many of us have been involved in ethnic studies for more than twenty years. The perspectives and observations offered in this monograph are transcribed from the recordings of the plenary. It offers the reader a far-ranging discussion of the field, its history, its struggles, its pedagogy, and some of its underlying principles.

[Review Of] Tu Wei-Ming,Ed. The Living Tree: The Changing Meaning Of Being Chinese Today, Jim Schnell Jan 1995

[Review Of] Tu Wei-Ming,Ed. The Living Tree: The Changing Meaning Of Being Chinese Today, Jim Schnell

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book evolved from the spring, 1991 special issue of “Daedalus, the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences". Tu Wei-ming presents a collection of perspectives of the Chinese identity. These essays stand alone well, some are more relevant and better written than others (as will be addressed in this review), but they collectively fail to provide a coherent unified interpretation. The chapter topics are somewhat related but the continuity among them is weak (which should not be interpreted as a shortcoming of the individual chapter authors).

A Cost-Benefit Analysis For The Implementation Of Lean Logistics To Aircraft Structural Repair At The Air Force Material Command's Warner Robins Air Logistics Center/Depot, Richard J. Ruggiero

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This research conducts a cost-benefit analysis of the implementation of lean logistics to the repair of aircraft structural components at the Air Force Material Command's (AFMC) Warner Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC). A literature review identifies new business practices in the automotive industry, collectively 'termed "lean production," that were translated by the RAND Corporation into a modified Air Force logistics system-- the "lean logistics" model.

Theoretical costs and benefits from the lean logistics model are translated into empirical costs and benefits associated with aircraft structural repair. The cost-benefit analysis results clearly demonstrate that express distribution costs for the sizable aircraft …

Naming And Knowing: Giving Forms To Things Unknown, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this essay is to provide some "forms" and "habitations"—some principles and examples, if you will—of the phenomenon of metaphorical thinking in science. First, I will share some general comments about this phenomenon, and then I will illustrate it with an extended discussion of a recent line of thought, research, and application within behavioral psychology.

Supporting Women Farmers In The Green Zones Of Mozambique, Ruth Ansah Ayisi Jan 1995

Supporting Women Farmers In The Green Zones Of Mozambique, Ruth Ansah Ayisi

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Women throughout much of the developing world are farmers, not only producing the food crops needed to feed their families, but seeking to generate the cash income necessary to gain access to education, health care, and a better way of life. However, in many countries—particularly in sub-Saharan Africa—women farmers must deal not only with the inherent difficulties of gender inequities, poverty, and the vagaries of nature, but with the consequences of war and civil strife as well. This issue of SEEDS reports on a case study of the efforts underway to help women farmers survive and prosper in the Green …

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Of all the fascinating aspects of Jamaican history, the Maroon Melement appears to be the only one that weaves through the whole period, including the present day. Referring to themselves as 'True blu chankofi piti bo," some Maroons of Moore Town in the parish of Portland claim that, with the exception of the freedom fighters of South Africa, they are the only living genuine and most honourable freedom fighters worthy of the name.

Review Of Skeletal Biology In The Great Plains: Migration, Warfare, Health, And Subsistence, Edited By Douglas W. Owsley And Richard L. Jantz. Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1994. 415 Pages., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The editors and contributors to this large, impressive volume present thirty-two chapters that deal with Great Plains skeletal biology. The goal of these diverse investigations was to derive critical information from human skeletal remains about past inhabitants of the Plains, including prehistoric and historic Indians, as well as Euro-Americans. These contributions are organized topically into five parts: (1) archaeology; (2) demography and paleopathology; (3) biological distance measures and skeletal morphology; (4) diet and subsistence strategies; and (5) warfare. The studies represent the collaborative efforts of archaeologists, physical anthropologists, ethnologists, ethnohistorians, and physical scientists. A major impetus for these …

Reporting Cambodia In The Australian Media : Heroic 'Journalism Or Neo-Colonial' Distortions?, Jefferson Lee

Research outputs pre 2011

This series of Occasional Papers is designed to bring to the attention of the reader work that focuses on Asian communication and culture. Compared to most areas of Asian Studies, communication and media have been largely ignored, a fact the recent Australian 'push into Asia' reveals. These Occasional Papers redress this absence and deal with a comprehensive range of issues that inform our understanding of the importance of communication in forging links between Australia and Asia. Consequently their scope is far-reaching, covering cultural, political, economic, and increasingly, technological topics and their relationship to the communication process that lies at the …

Health Information Privacy, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1995

Health Information Privacy, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Thoughtful scholarship in the area of informational privacy sometimes assumes that a significant level of privacy can coexist with the development of a modern health information infrastructure. Some commentators suggest that we can have it both ways: that adequate legal protection of informational privacy will eliminate the need to significantly limit the collection of health data. This article demonstrates that there is no such easy resolution of the conflict between the need for information and the need for privacy. Because significant levels of privacy cannot realistically be achieved within the health information infrastructure currently envisaged by policymakers, we confront a …

Managerialism-Something Old, Something Borrowed, Something New : Making Government More Business-Like, John Dixon Jan 1995

Managerialism-Something Old, Something Borrowed, Something New : Making Government More Business-Like, John Dixon

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The panacea for the public sector's self-evidently inadequate performance is seen by many as the need for civil servants to pursue a results-oriented approach to their management using private sector management principles and practices. This managerialist view now pervades public administration in, most notably, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States) (Caiden, 1994; Dixon, 1988 & 1995; Dixon & Kouzmin, 1994, Kouzmin, Dixon & Wilson, 1995. Hede, 1991; Ingraham & Peters, 1988; Lane, 1985; Mascarenhas, 1993; Peters, 1994; Pollitt, 1990) and, embrionicly, in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Government, 1995). The purpose of this paper is to …

Pathways To Change: Case Studies Of Strategic Negotiations, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Robert B. Mckersie, Richard E. Walton Jan 1995

Pathways To Change: Case Studies Of Strategic Negotiations, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Robert B. Mckersie, Richard E. Walton

Upjohn Press

The authors identify and analyze the strategies for change and techniques most often used in today's labor negotiations. Nearly gone, they say, is the traditional "arms length" approach used by negotiators in the past. Instead, modern collective bargaining is characterized mainly by divergent strategies the authors characterize as either "forcing" (highly contentious) or "fostering" (highly cooperative). A dozen detailed case studies from a variety of industries are presented that show when, why and how these strategies are used, by whom, and to what result. These cases clearly demonstrate the use of both forcing and fostering strategies, as well as their …

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera Jan 1995

What Is Development Communication?, Anura Goonasekera

Research outputs pre 2011

Development communication is often looked upon, by writers on the subject, as a tool to bring about development in less developed countries. In this sense, what is emphasised is the use of communication media for development. In a recently published Orientation and Resource Kit on Development Communication by UNESCO, Mayo and Servaes (1994) begin with the observation, that communication media are often called upon to support development programmes. They go on to state that, whereas development strategies could vary within and across countries, the communication activities associated with them are often quite similar. These activities are informing people about specific …

[Introduction To] Cooperation Under Fire: Anglo- German Restraint During World War Ii, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1995

[Introduction To] Cooperation Under Fire: Anglo- German Restraint During World War Ii, Jeffrey W. Legro

Bookshelf

Why do nations cooperate even as they try to destroy each other? Jeffrey Legro explores this question in the context of World War II, the "total" war that in fact wasn't. During the war, combatant states attempted to sustain agreements limiting the use of three forms of combat considered barbarous—submarine attacks against civilian ships, strategic bombing of civilian targets, and chemical warfare. Looking at how these restraints worked or failed to work between such fierce enemies as Hitler's Third Reich and Churchill's Britain, Legro offers a new understanding of the dynamics of World War II and the sources of international …

Revisiting The Issue Of Terrorism: An Institutional Analysis Of U.S. Sponsored Terrorism Directed Toward Cuba, Rick A. Matthews Dec 1994

Revisiting The Issue Of Terrorism: An Institutional Analysis Of U.S. Sponsored Terrorism Directed Toward Cuba, Rick A. Matthews

Masters Theses

Consistent with Herman's (1982) call to more critically examine state-sponsored terrorism, this study assesses the sociopolitical and economic context in which the U.S. has terrorized the nation-state of Cuba. While the definitional framework in which the U.S. has traditionally examined acts of terrorism excludes from it the possibility of self incrimination, this research uses a single standard and nondiscriminatory definition which examines the behavior in question and harms done, as opposed to a definition based on power considerations alone. The method in which this research is conducted is qualitative, consistent with the principles of a sociohistorical case study, using an …
