Capturing The Impacts Of North American Free Trade Agreement On South Dakota's Economy, Bashir Qasmi, Scott Fausti

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

In August 1992, representatives of Canada, Mexico, and the United States concluded their negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The treaty has been subsequently signed and ratified by all three countries. As of January 1, 1994, NAFTA created the largest free trade area in the world, with more than 360 million people and a combined gross domestic product of roughly $6.5 trillion (in U.S. dollars). A comparison of NAFTA with the European Union (EU) is provided in appendix A. NAFTA essentially lifts trade barriers between Mexico, Canada, and the United States. At the time of signing of …

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The recent discovery that an anonymously published 1620 essay was an early writing of Thomas Hobbes invites investigation of his early thinking. Hobbes relied on mostly classical sources to advance a basically conventionalist theory of law and to anticipate twentieth century analyses of the principles of rule of law such as that made famous by F. A. Hayek.

Kiowa Powwows: Tribal Identity Through The Continuity Of The Gourd Dance, Benjamin R. Kracht

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Today, intertribal participants at Southern Plains powwows (Oklahoma and Texas) celebrate common history and culture-their sense of "Indianness"-through the enactment of ceremonial song and dance. The Kiowa playa central and assertive role in the Southern Plains powwow network. and they use the Gourd Dance as the vehicle to identify their "Kiowaness." The thesis of this paper is that the Kiowa continue to maintain their tribal identity through performances of the Gourd Dance. which they claim as their own. The maintenance of identity is traced from the late nineteenth century through the evolution of Kiowa dances leading up to the Gourd …

Review Of American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother Of War By Thomas Vennum, Jr., Brian S. Butler Aug 1994

Review Of American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother Of War By Thomas Vennum, Jr., Brian S. Butler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Thomas Vennum, Jr.'s, American Indian Lacrosse is a welcome compendium of the cultural importance of lacrosse to Native Americans. Using an interesting arrangement of analysis and fictional narrative, the book examines the signal importance of lacrosse in Native American cultures throughout eastern North America. Played for centuries by many Native American societies, lacrosse has been co-opted by Anglo-America, reformed, rationalized, and ordered in a way that has divested it of the ritual importance it once found among Native Americans. Vennum's investigation re-animates a tradition that has withered among Native Americans who have been forced to abandon their cultures by Anglo-Americans. …

The Borders Of A Canvas Tent: An Analysis Of Feminist Utopian Novels, Catherine R. Caldwell Aug 1994

The Borders Of A Canvas Tent: An Analysis Of Feminist Utopian Novels, Catherine R. Caldwell

Masters Theses

This thesis is a critical examination of three feminist utopian novels: Woman on the Edge of Time, by Marge Piercy; Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gillman, and Les Guerilleres, by Monique Wittig. The study, derived from the sociology of knowledge and deconstruction theory, focuses on similarities and differences involving: (a) sexuality; (b) community building; (c) religion; (d) decision making processes, political systems, and modes of production; (e) crime, deviance and political conflict resolution; and (f) child rearing. The analysis demonstrates that utopia may serve to critique dominant ideology. It also shows how utopian novels treat, and suggest possibilities …

Nuclear Threats By The United States In The Korean And Vietnam Wars: Toward A Grounded Theory Of International Governmental Crime, David Kauzlarich

Dissertations

Criminologists have generally ignored the crimes of governmental actors and agencies. This study delves into this neglected area of sociological inquiry by addressing definitional, legal, empirical, and theoretical dimensions of the phenomenon of governmental crime. The four research objectives are to:

1. Demonstrate that socially deleterious governmental actions can be studied criminologically through the epistemological framework of international law.

2. Document the existence of such governmental crimes in the area of nuclear weapons.

3. Describe and compare the patterns of the United States' violations of international laws during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

4. Inductively generate hypotheses and theoretical propositions …

Somalia And Unosom: A Case Study In International Peacekeeping, Shawn D. Miller

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Somalia. In December 1992, this word conjured up horrific images of extreme deprivation and senseless suffering due to prolonged war and famine. Calls for intervention were heard and answered resulting in an unprecedented deployment of troops for a humanitarian cause. Immediately thereafter, a notable surge of support for the United Nations (UN) and its role in the post-Cold War world was evident.
