Under Guard: A Case Study Of The S.S. Black Point And U-853 For The Production Of More Comprehensive War Memorials And Public Exhibits, Rebecca Sobus
Open Access Master's Theses
The following project addresses how the preservation of memory is affected when memorials and public exhibits develop within a dispersed material cultural landscape. To address this problem, the Battle of Point Judith in May 1945 is used a case study. The Battle of Point Judith and its associated wrecks, the German U-853 and the American SS Black Point, display the positives and negatives of memorialization and public exhibition for historical artifacts across a decentralized material cultural landscape. After analyzing the characteristics of memorials, museums, and memorial-museums through additional examples like Auschwitz-Birkenau and Hiroshima, it may be seen that the Battle …
Transactional Clinical Support For Mutual Aid Groups: Toward A Theory Of Transactional Movement Lawyering, Michael Haber
Transactional Clinical Support For Mutual Aid Groups: Toward A Theory Of Transactional Movement Lawyering, Michael Haber
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In response to the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring and summer of 2020, thousands of grassroots, participatory, and often social movement-connected community efforts to help feed and care for one another through the crisis were launched, many of which identified their projects as 'mutual aid'. This article tells the story of how the Hofstra Law School Community Economic Development ("CED") Clinic has provided legal support and information to hundreds of these COVID-19 mutual aid groups. The article briefly reviews Professor Dean Spade's 2020 book Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next), contrasting it …

Trapped On The Eve Of War, 1941: Stalin And His Generals Failing Separately And Together, Cynthia A. Roberts
Publications and Research
This chapter examines Soviet military planning and preparedness on the eve of Germany’s June 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. Drawing on archival evidence and post-Soviet scholarship, it reassesses explanations for the Red Army’s catastrophic initial defeats. It argues that the General Staff’s unrealistic offensive plans and force posture conflicted with Stalin’s political strategy of deterrence and war avoidance. This mismatch, rooted partly in the Soviet military’s organizational preference for offensive operations and flawed assumptions about mobilization and the initial period of war, increased Soviet vulnerability to surprise attack. The chapter considers the development of Soviet war plans in 1940–1941, …
Regional Variations In The Incidence Of Brain Glioma In Adults In Alabama, Mina Lobbous
Regional Variations In The Incidence Of Brain Glioma In Adults In Alabama, Mina Lobbous
All ETDs from UAB
Purpose: Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumor in adults in the US with an annual age-adjusted incidence rate of 4.67 to 5.73 per 100,000 persons. Exposure to ioniz-ing radiation is the only established risk factor for non-hereditary glioma risk. There are several sources of carcinogenic contaminants in northeast Alabama and western Georgia with the Coosa River serving as the region’s primary water source. In this study, we aimed to examine the incidence rate of glioma in northeast Alabama compared to the rest of the state as well as the association of possible environmental exposure on disease risk and …
"The Cloak Of Social Feeling": Alfred Adler's Gemeinschaftsgefuhl In Practice And Memory, Esteban T. Arnold
"The Cloak Of Social Feeling": Alfred Adler's Gemeinschaftsgefuhl In Practice And Memory, Esteban T. Arnold
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Alfred Adler’s concept of Gemeinschaftsgefühl (community feeling), a simple yet potent idea that started in a Viennese café and expanded far beyond it. Ideas have lives beyond that of their authors, and this thesis argues that Alfred Adler’s idea of Gemeinschaftsgefühl was pressed into the service of various social and political agendas. Adler was privately a socialist, but he never wished to see Gemeinschaftsgefühl become a tool for this or any other movement. With an idealistic worldview, Adler sought to challenge and transform the pervading medical and psychotherapeutic conceptions of …

It Permeated Everything: A Lived Experience Of Slow Violence And Toxicological Disaster, Tara Jo Holmberg
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Impacts of disasters on individuals are dependent on numerous factors: local to international political dynamics, socioeconomics, geography, educational background, and outside support among others. Currently, much of disaster research focuses on those of natural origin, acute and large-scale environmental events, emergency management, and the ability of individuals, communities, and societies to prepare for, and recover from, likely known disasters in their region. However, there is a lack of data about individual experiences through ‘invisible’ anthropogenic disasters, especially those that fall under the umbrella of slow environmental violence (Davies, 2019; Rice, 2016). Through critical phenomenological autoethnography, I examine an individual experience …

It is with a great deal of excitement ( and with thanks to so many contributing colleagues and collaborators over the years ) that we are able to present to the public for the first time a newly published work by one of the great originators of modem legal history and law and society scholarship-James Willard Hurst. Hurst published his last two books, Law and Markets in United States History and Dealing with Statutes, in 1982. And, fittingly, he published his last substantive article--.-a very short comment on "The Use of Case Histories"-in the Wisconsin Law Review in 1992. In …

Report Of The International Commission Of Human Rights Experts On Ethiopia, Kaari Betty Murungi, Steven Ratner, Radhika Comaraswamy
Other Publications
In the present report, submitted pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution S-33/1, the international Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia presents its initial findings. The Commission concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that violations such as extrajudicial killings, rape, sexual violence and starvation of the civilian population as a method of warfare have been committed in Ethiopia since 3 November 2020. The Commission finds reasonable grounds to believe that, in several instances, these violations amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Commission provides an assessment of transitional justice developments and makes urgent recommendations.

Roadmap To Reconciliation: An Institutional And Conceptual Framework For Jewish-Muslim Engagement, J. R. Rothstein, Esq., Shlomo Pill, Ariel J. Liberman, Esq.
Touro Law Review
This paper calls for the establishment of a comprehensive academic and theological center to be created and located at a prestigious secular university in the United States. As the first of its kind in North America, it should be affiliated with both American Muslim and Jewish institutions. Modeled on similar Jewish-Christian centers, its mission will be to foster both a neutral ground for dialogue and the development of a theology of Jewish-Muslim coexistence.

A well-established conceptualization of academic capitalism is rooted in the marriage of economic theory and critical social. Significantly, academic capitalism links economic dimensions with the political-ideological transformations of U.S. society associated with the fall of communism and the rise of neoliberalism. Academic capitalism is based on a recognition of the paradoxical nature of higher education and offers a lens through which to examine the ways in which institutions in the United States have come to prioritize learning for the labor market as a private good within the new global economy, while also becoming less beholden to the notion of learning …

Use Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems And Regulatory Landscape: Unravelling The Future Challenges In The High Sky, K Kirthan Shenoy, Divya Tyagi
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The individuals on the ground nowadays often observe objects distantly hover over the sky, which raises the question of who might be operating the object or what the object might record. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or Drones today have quickly penetrated civilian, military, and commercial sectors. The drones or UAS, with the advancement of technology, are now capable of traversing long distances, having long endurance, and having multipurpose functionality. The UAS industry is fast expanding, with trade investment touching the billion-dollar mark in flourishing economies. The advent of the Covid 19 pandemic saw a steep rise in the use of …

Airlines release the unburned jet fuel into the atmosphere to reduce the weight of aircraft before landing. Sometimes, aircraft reach a weight more than takeoff weight while departing from the airport. Therefore, the pilot follows the ATC comment to dump fuel into the atmosphere to reduce the aircraft's weight to avoid accidents. Due to fuel dumping, an airline faces fuel consumption, loss, and several diseases affect environmental pollutants, and living things. The total fuel consumption of commercial airlines worldwide in 2021 is 57 billion gallons. If jet fuel routinely hit the ground, it would pollute water and land and damage …
Addressing The Accountability Void: War Crimes Against Persons With Disabilities, William I. Pons, Janet E. Lord, Professor Michael Stein
Addressing The Accountability Void: War Crimes Against Persons With Disabilities, William I. Pons, Janet E. Lord, Professor Michael Stein
All Faculty Scholarship
Academics rarely raise the need to consider persons with disabilities when preventing,
investigating and prosecuting international humanitarian law (IHL) violations.
Worse still, no actual attempts have been made to include a disability perspective
into practical guidance and monitoring mechanisms. This article addresses that
void by laying out how existing yet unutilized IHL obligations can be leveraged to
repress and suppress disability-based IHL violations. In doing so, the article will
detail how fact-finding approaches, criminal investigative processes and reporting
methods for IHL violations can be inclusive of persons with disabilities and thus
more appropriately address the endemic under-representation of a disability …
Abolition Is Not Abstract: Zines And The Transmission Of Revolutionary Cultural Capital, Austin Wonder
Abolition Is Not Abstract: Zines And The Transmission Of Revolutionary Cultural Capital, Austin Wonder
Master's Theses
Abolition as a theory and practice-whether in relation to the institution of the prison, systems of policing, or the carceral state as a whole-has received relatively little attention or serious appreciation within the discipline of Sociology. Calls for the abolition of policing and prisons are often taken for granted as naïve and radical demands, perceived as being disassociated from the material conditions of reality. Nonetheless, abolitionist analyses provide a unique and critical perspective from which to explore alternatives to addressing pervasive police violence and mass incarceration through strategies which do not rely upon, or increase the power of, the criminal …
The Sin Of Racism, Ray Almanza
The Sin Of Racism, Ray Almanza
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the history of racism in relation to the Catholic Church. This history amounts to an indictment of the Roman Catholic Church not only as a neutral party in the historical emergence of white supremacy, but a directly linked cause of racism. First, it describes how racism emerged in its modern manifestation in three major dimensions which include the geopolitical, economic, and social. Then, it centers on two general forms of analysis, a cultural analysis, and a philosophical analysis. Drawing on insights from Liberation Theology, various themes are highlighted as they apply to the discussion of race in …
The Importance Of Cultural Knowledge In Counterinsurgency, Allee Norvell
The Importance Of Cultural Knowledge In Counterinsurgency, Allee Norvell
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This thesis discusses the importance and usefulness of cultural knowledge in counterinsurgency. When combatting insurgent groups, it can be difficult to identify insurgents and utilize conventional warfare. Insurgents use various tactics and strategies to promote their goals while living among the local population. These aspects require intervening countries and counterinsurgency to take the varying strategies into consideration when making their military decisions. The most important aspect needed for these counterinsurgency operations is cultural knowledge. Having an understanding of the intervening population and its dynamics with the insurgent group can be proven to be very beneficial. Specifically, in the cases of …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The study of the social movement, specifically on the marginalized or minority group is an important tool to gain insight into the social and cultural evolution of any given society or culture. A study on the disability rights movement is a growing field in social science, especially in the backdrop of the ever-growing awareness of social and cultural change of the 21st Century. Generally speaking, there are a wide gap in the prior research as it failed in one way or the another, ranging from inability to account for the multifaceted nature of disability, overemphasis on a specific aspect at …

The Representation Of Muay Thai In Prachya Pinkaew's Tom Yum Goong (2005), Qian Wang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Through a textual analysis of the popular Thai film Tom Yum Goong (2005), this paper explores how the director, Prachya Pinkaew, expresses his own nationalistic and localistic argument by creating a myth of a hero that uses Muay Thai to defeat the villains in order to save his elephant, which symbolizes (as the allegory of) Thailand. Considering the historical context of this film where a strong sense of modern nationalism was prevailing in the Thai society; it is reasonable to further infer that Muay Thai in this film represents the Thai intellect, the film title Tom Yum Goong refers to …

In this paper we report experiences in implementing a new course ‘Understanding Drone & Robotics Technology – History, Usage, Ethics & Legal Issues’ at the Singapore Management University framed as a strategic knowledge management (KM) initiative in an institution of higher learning aimed at capturing, sharing and creating new knowledge about disruptive technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles. We posit the new course as a knowledge innovation initiative (similar to a KM-enabled business case in a corporate setting) in support of the university’s mission and vision so as to deliver new value to students and to stay ahead of the …

Fptp Electoral System Of Myanmar As A Barrier For Ethnic Minority Inclusiveness In Parliamentary Decision-Making, Yamonh Pwint Thit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In Myanmar, the ethnic minority do not have equal access to public services to raise their issues and voices for it. They are not adequately represented in state institutions by the political system which does not grant the adequate opportunities to participate in decision-making at union level. Ethnic minorities believe that all groups should have equal access to public services and enjoy an efficient system of protection of human rights. Ethnic Diversity may result in tensions within the nation when one group is economically or socially or politically dominant or privileged. By being discriminated and marginalized through the political system, …

Development Of Electrochemical Detection For Cortisol And Hepatitis C Virus Core Antigen, Pannaporn Pusomjit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation focused on the development of electrochemical biosensors for the determination of essential biomarkers by using a label-free assay. This dissertation can be divided into two parts. In the first part, a non-invasive aptamer-based electrochemical biosensor using disposable screen-printed graphene electrodes (SPGEs) was developed for simple, rapid, and sensitive determination of cortisol. The specific recognition of the cortisol DNA aptamer (CApt) was modified with streptavidin magnetic beads (MBs) before simple immobilization onto the electrode surface using a neodymium magnet. The electrochemical behavior of the aptamer-based biosensor was assessed by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Furthermore, …

Russian Motives In Cyberattacks: Case Studies Of Estonia And Ukraine, Theeratiphong Pannil
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The purpose of this independent_study is to examine Russian motivations for the 2007 cyberattacks on Estonia's critical information infrastructure and the 2015 Ukraine power grid breach. It also analyzes the aftermath and consequences of the attacks, as well as efforts to address the issues. The study found that Russia's primary purpose in cyberattacks is most likely to survive the anarchy of the international system, in which states can never trust each other and must rely on themselves. The acts of Estonia and Ukraine, as well as NATO's ambitions to expand, intervene, and achieve dominance in Russia's sphere of influence, would …
