The Vanguard

Capital, along with labor, is a fundamental building block of American society. Together they help create the industry services, and information we need to live in the present and to build for the future.

But what kind of future? The purpose of this article is to help you shape a healthy future through socially responsible investing.

You can help influence the way our economy uses capital, regardless of your financial position - whether you are just beginning to accumulate capital, whether you have substantial wealth in a multitude of investments, or even if you have no money to invest.

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool Jan 1988

Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Early anthropological studies addressed the economic position of women as one component of women's "status"-a construct used to examine a variety of gender-based social distinctions. These distinctions were conceptualized as the opposing domains of "domestic" and "public." The association of women with the domestic domain was viewed as the critical factor in understanding asymmetrical relations of power and authority. Since status has generally been defined in terms of participation in the public, economic, and political sectors dominated by men, anthropologists have proposed alternatives to the strict association of power with public roles. They used the term "influence" to mean the …

"The Greatest Thing I Ever Did Was Join The Union": A History Of The Dakota Teamsters During The Depression, Jonathan F. Wagner Jan 1988

"The Greatest Thing I Ever Did Was Join The Union": A History Of The Dakota Teamsters During The Depression, Jonathan F. Wagner

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the Great Depression the Dakota Teamsters established themselves as the most important union on the northern Plains. 1 Their success involved struggle and sacrifice, with a full complement of setbacks and losses as well as advances and gains. From the 1930s on, the union has reflected certain of the general characteristics of the parent body, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America. Like the International, the Dakota Teamsters was always basically a truck drivers' union, but also something more. As with the International, the concept of jurisdiction was elastic. "In our teamsters union," the Minot, …

The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames Jan 1988

The Allocation Of Parental Care Among The Ye'kwana, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

It is well known that human children require more care or parental investment than any other primate species (Lancaster and Lancaster 1983). While this dimension of human behavior is well documented in the psychological literature for Euroamerican populations (Babchuck et al. 1985), it has received scant, quantitative attention by anthropologists working among tribal populations (for exceptions see Whiting and Whiting 1975, Katz and Konner 1981, Hurtado et al. 1985, Hewlett, this volume (Chapter 16), Turke, this volume (Chapter 10)). The role of alloparental care (care of non-offspring children) has received even less quantitative attention by social scientists (for a review …

Psychology Among The Saints: The Development Of Behavioral Science At Brigham Young University, Bruce L. Brown, Mark K. Allen Jan 1988

Psychology Among The Saints: The Development Of Behavioral Science At Brigham Young University, Bruce L. Brown, Mark K. Allen

Faculty Publications

There was a strong interest in psychology at Brigham Young University at the turn of the century; the third president was a psychologist and a number of distinguished psychologists regularly visited the campus. An outstanding young scholar who was destined to become the only Mormon president of the American Psychological Association started a vigorous academic psychology program in those early years, but he left the university because of a controversy over his teachings. Psychology at Brigham Young University developed little from that time until the 1940s. The 1950s were a time of rapid growth and development, expansion of the faculty, …

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai Jan 1988

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai

School K-12

The 1980s have been characterized as a decade of platforms for educational change. In 19S3 alone, five reports were released by national task forces and commissions, all expressing serious concern for the future of youth and society, and all proposing recommendations for ways in which educational policies and practices might be altered, to address such concerns.

Framing ‘Bomb Talk’: The Macro Consequences Of The Microfoundations Of Social Interaction In A Goffmanian Nuclear World, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Framing ‘Bomb Talk’: The Macro Consequences Of The Microfoundations Of Social Interaction In A Goffmanian Nuclear World, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper, originating with issues generated in Professor Deegan’s seminar on contemporary sociological theory at the University of Nebraska, explores the “frames” or microfoundations of everyday interaction and their consequences for the ultimate macrosociological threat: global nuclear annihilation. The theoretical basis of this study is Erving Goffman’s Frame Analysis: An Essay on the Organization of Experience. The adequacy and comprehensiveness of Goffman’s major constructs are substantiated by data from the everyday world of newspapers and popular culture. “Keys” (or transformational conventions) are pivotal in this analysis. The central thesis of this paper holds that the keys used to transformationally …

Modernization In West Africa: How Women's Lives Have Been Marginalized, Patricia S. Peterman Dec 1987

Modernization In West Africa: How Women's Lives Have Been Marginalized, Patricia S. Peterman

Masters Theses

Social scientists have documented the effects of colonialism and independence in West Africa, but have focused on male roles in economic institutions. Recent research reveals not only the importance of women as agricultural producers but also the marginalization of women in contemporary national society. Development projects have not eased economic hardship, rather emphasis on industrialization has led to agricultural underdevelopment, borne more heavily by women and children than by men.

This paper looks at the micro-level issues of the division of labor, the structure of the household, the status of women, and issues concerning fertility and reproduction. In doing so, …

Aircrew Training Devices: Utility And Utilization Of Advanced Instructional Features (Phase Iv–Summary Report), Donald J. Polzella, David C. Hubbard, James E. Brown, H. Craig Mclean

Psychology Faculty Publications

Modern aircrew training devices (ATDs) are equipped with sophisticated hardware and software capabilities, known as advanced instructional features (AIFs), that permit a simulator instructor to prepare briefings, manage training, vary task difficulty/fidelity, monitor performance, and provide feedback for flight simulation training missions. The utility and use of the AIF capabilities of Air Force ATDs were explored by means of a survey of 534 simulator instructors from Air Training Command, Military Airlift Command, Strategic Air Command, and Tactical Air Command training sites. The primary purpose of the survey was to provide a database that could be used in defining the requirements …
