Information Technology And Wealth: Cybernetics, History And Economics, Elin Whitney-Smith
Information Technology And Wealth: Cybernetics, History And Economics, Elin Whitney-Smith
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Capitalism developed where and when it did because there was high information access. There was high information access because of a major advance in information technology--the press. Where the technology was not controlled by the "powers that be" there was economic growth and a shift in the entire social structure. Where it was controlled there was no structural change and there was economic ruin. The development of capitalism is a major step change in economic growth. It is also a major change in the way people organize themselves into groups.
Major step changes in the growth and in the organization …
Cultural Diversty And The Department Chair: Gleanings From The Literature, David W. Addington
Cultural Diversty And The Department Chair: Gleanings From The Literature, David W. Addington
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to illuminate the implications of cultural diversity for departmental leadership in communication and performing arts. Through a critical literature review situated against contemporary geopolitical upheaval, the discussion maps the rapid expansion of intercultural communication research, identifies performing arts journals as emergent hubs of intercultural discourse, and problematizes notions of cultural purity. It argues that department chairs occupy a strategic nexus for cultivating multicultural pedagogy, inclusive recruitment, and global curricular integration while navigating organizational culture and resource constraints. The analysis foregrounds globalization, intercultural competence, and pluralistic governance as essential drivers of sustainable academic administration and urges …
Faculty Support Groups Vs. Burnout, Joseph G. Meyers
Faculty Support Groups Vs. Burnout, Joseph G. Meyers
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article investigates academic burnout through the lens of organizational communication, describing how voluntary faculty support groups mitigate stress and enhance teaching efficacy in higher education. Drawing on qualitative reflection and preliminary survey data, the discussion links role ambiguity, tenure pressure, financial constraints, and unprepared students to declining job satisfaction and classroom performance. Support group participation fosters collegiality, expands informal learning networks, and opens communication channels that reframe stress as manageable challenge. Participants report improved perspective, increased student engagement, and broader campus initiatives such as wellness workshops and mentoring seminars. By illustrating strategies that transform individual coping into collective action, …
Carrying A Big Carrot: Linking Multilateral Disarmament And Development Assistance, David A. Koplow, Philip G. Schrag
Carrying A Big Carrot: Linking Multilateral Disarmament And Development Assistance, David A. Koplow, Philip G. Schrag
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article proposes, as a new element of the "liberal internationalism" that should characterize the post-Cold War world, a simultaneous solution to these three problems. The nations of the world should negotiate a series of multilateral agreements to stop the spread of advanced weaponry, and include in each of them, as an overt incentive for developing states to accept the disarmament and verification obligations, provisions that explicitly require the affluent, developed states to make specified monetary and in-kind transfers to the third world parties. The new regime should also provide stronger-than-customary treaty procedures for clarifying ambiguities, adjudicating claims, and resolving …

Journal Articles
Addressing the future of radical politics at the end of the cold war, this article offers a reconstruction of radical theory around the goal of enabling collaborative self-realization through participatory democratic politics. It offers an interpretation of the radical tradition as defined by a view of human nature as a cultural artifact, and a conception of liberation as the self-conscious transformation of human nature. It proceeds to critique radical theory’s traditional focus on revolution as the means of radical transformation. Distinguishing instrumental and self-expressive conceptions of transformation it critiques revolutionary processes as tending to reproduce instrumental culture. It offers democratic …

The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd
The Effect Of Sexual Harassment On Female Naval Officers: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Anne Krohne Edd
Dissertations
Sexual harassment has grown to epidemic proportions since being documented as a workplace problem. Court cases are rising along with costs to organizations from litigation, turnover, absenteeism and stress-related medical claims. Courts are continually refining the legal definition of sexual harassment, resulting in a steady expansion of employers' liability. Perceptions of men and women regarding what constitutes sexual harassment differ markedly as do their responses to sexually oriented behaviors at work. Development of a formula for effectively preventing sexual harassment is, therefore, a complex and perplexing exercise. Two of three women serving in the military report that they have been …

This joint memorandum is submitted to the court hearing Dellums v. Bush. This amicus brief advocates that the President may not order American armed forces to make war without consultation with and approval by Congress. The brief also argues that the case is justiciable.

Nato Armaments Cooperation: The Case Of The European Fighter Aircraft, Carlos J. Sancho Gonzalez
Nato Armaments Cooperation: The Case Of The European Fighter Aircraft, Carlos J. Sancho Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
Difficulties faced by cooperative acquisition programs are identified as the inability to agree on common requirements and the existence of economic or political interests of the partner nations which conflict with or impinge on the program. These are the causes of failure of many of the past cooperative projects undertaken by NATO countries for the purpose of standardization. The study investigated the European Fighter Aircraft (EFA) program in order to find if the same holds true for the EFA and the impact that those difficulties had in the program. The EFA has been subject to the same problems. All the …

A Comparison Of Decision-Making Variables Used By Dual-Career Couples, Margaret K. Conrad
A Comparison Of Decision-Making Variables Used By Dual-Career Couples, Margaret K. Conrad
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The increasing number of households transitioning from traditional oneworker families to dual-career families has created complex issues for the individual, the family, employers, and society in general. Learning more about how these dual-career couples make decisions will help provide a better capability to tailor counseling needs to these individuals, as well as guide policy for employers. This study examined 115 dual-career spouses from four different occupational groups: Air Force, Army, Navy, and civilian organizations. The participants consisted of 54 husbands and 61 wives who completed a questionnaire designed for this study. The survey measured 12 decision-making variables identified in a …

The Nowhere Man: When The "Miracle" Turned To Mush, David Nyhan
New England Journal of Public Policy
He didn 't steal money, go to jail, become embroiled in a personal scandal, or appoint a pack of thieves to high office, as other Massachusetts politicians have on occasion. But his fall was as dramatic as if he had done any or all of the above. From winning reelection in 1986 with 69 percent ofthe vote, then capturing the Democrats' presidential nomination, his fortunes sank like a stone.
Michael Stanley Dukakis, the stoic son of Greek immigrants, became a figure of ridicule in his third term. Thanks to the regional economy's sharp recession and the lingering effects of the …

Jfk: The Education Of A President, Nigel Hamilton
New England Journal of Public Policy
What goes into the making of a president? To what extent are the mind and character of the American commander in chief determined by his background, his family — and his education? This article represents a transcript of two lectures Nigel Hamilton presented in the spring and fall of 1989 at the Massachusetts State Archives. They were derived from the preliminary sketches for the author's full-scale biography of John F. Kennedy, to be published by Houghton Mifflin in 1992 on the anniversary of the birth of the thirty-fifth president.

Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.

Addressed are the nation's options for energy policies heading into the 1990s and the need for less government regulation and more market interactions for price-setting. Such a policy should also include the full environmental costs to production as a way to help reduce excessive energy usage.
