Military Culture And Inadvertent Escalation In World War Ii, Jeffrey W. Legro Apr 1994

Military Culture And Inadvertent Escalation In World War Ii, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

How can the use of "unthinkable" means of warfare be avoided? How can states successfully observe mutually desired limitations on "taboo" forms of combat? These questions are important because of concern that nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and terrorism will spread and be used. The growing number of states--e.g., Israel, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Ukraine--that have such means of inflicting harm increases the likelihood that any future conflict will involve a desire for restrictions. Countries may pursue restraint because popular opinion vilifies certain weapons; because leaders calculate that escalation would damage their domestic and international political support; or because states …

Lonely Libertarian: One Man's View Of Antidiscrimination Law, Lea Brilmayer Feb 1994

Lonely Libertarian: One Man's View Of Antidiscrimination Law, Lea Brilmayer

San Diego Law Review

In his book Forbidden Grounds: The Case Against Employment Discrimination Laws, Richard Epstein attacks antidiscrimination law from three different philosophical points of view: utilitarian, libertarian, and freedom of contract. The author of this Article addresses each of these philosophies, and argues that none of these arguments is compelling as applied to a legal regime as popular as Epstein admits core antidiscrimination law to be. This Article points out inconsistencies in Epstein's view of the public's acceptance of antidiscrimination laws as being silly.

A River Ran Through It... : The Cultural Ecology Of The Santa Clara Valley Riparian Zone, Erin M. Reilly

Research Manuscript Series

This study addresses the nature of human interaction with the riparian environment in the Santa Clara Valley over time. This is not a new anthropological theme. Literature dates to 1863 The Earth as Modified by Human Action, by George P. Marsh); cultural ecologist Betty J Meggars stated: "The relationship- of culture to environment is one of the oldest problems in the science of anthropology ... "(Meggars, 1968:19); and, anthropologist Alfred Kroeber said: "no culture is wholly intelligible without reference to the nonculture, or so-called environmental factors with which it is in relation and which condition it "(Kroeber 1906:297).

Rethinking Ootw, Robert J. Bunker Jan 1994

Rethinking Ootw, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article challenges the concept and, by default, the continuum shown in Figure 1 and the range of military operations in the theater strategic environment (hereafter referred to as the RMO model), which it helps define. To do so, it will address the relationship between the OOTW concept and RMO model, the concept of war underlying AirLand Battle doctrine and OOTW as a flawed concept. It further argues that the RMO model should be replaced by not one, but two new politico-military models as a doctrinal bridge. It is not within this article's scope to attempt to create these models, …

The Future Soldier System: An Energy Perspective, Robert J. Bunker Jan 1994

The Future Soldier System: An Energy Perspective, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The Soldier Integrated Protective Ensemble (SIPE) Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) has proven to be an ambitious and farsighted project. It is based on a modular subsystem approach which paves the way toward the development of a head-to-toe integrated fighting system for the dismounted infantry soldier. This system is composed of the soldier and everything worn, consumed and carried for use in a tactical environment. Having successfully proven itself, the SIPE ATD will now transition into follow-on programs which will field and demonstrate soldier system prototypes.

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard Jan 1994

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Peretti's novels provide a clear statement of the worldview of conservative Christians who hold the Bible to be literally true and without error. Not only is the reader presented with doctrinal positions, but the implications of those positions for life in modern society are spelled out as well. In this essay, I analyze Peretti's views of the modern world, its heroes and villains, and argue they are representative of the views of the New Christian Right (Liebman and Wuthnow) in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Inhabiting The Dangerous Middle Of The Space Between: An Intramodernist Reading Of Kroetsch's Gone Indian, Mary K. Kirtz

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Robert Kroetsch, whose approaches to novel writing extend from the primarily realist novel But We Are Exiles (1965) to the clearly post-modernist What the Crow Said (1978) and the somewhat less postmodern Alibi (1983), has left equally wide..ranging impressions on the English--Canadian critical landscape. Responses extend from those who see, at least in his earlier novels, a sympathy for realist and modernist impulses towards synthesis (Turner, Schaefer) to those who have identified Kroetsch as a preeminent postmodern writer (Hutcheon, Neuman); indeed, Linda Hut.. cheon has called him "Mr. Canadian Post.. modern."2 Even within the two parts of Hutcheon's formulation, however, …

The State Of The Parties, First Edition, Daniel M. Shea, John C. Green Jan 1994

The State Of The Parties, First Edition, Daniel M. Shea, John C. Green

The State of the Parties First Edition

This volume originated in a conference entitled "State of the Parties: 1992 and Beyond" held at The University of Akron September 23-24, 1993.

This volume provides students of political parties with up-to-date information on both the state of American party organizations and controversies over how these organizations are studied. The collection focuses on new direction in party scholarship-including debates over the vitality and relevance of the two party system, the analytical usefulness of the traditional model of American parties, and the import of organizational studies.

[Review Of] Charlotte H. Bruner, Ed. African Women's Writing, Larene Despain Jan 1994

[Review Of] Charlotte H. Bruner, Ed. African Women's Writing, Larene Despain

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

African Women's Writing is a companion volume to Bruner's Unwinding Threads, first published by Heinemann ten years ago. In her "Preface" to this volume, Bruner says that this book came about because "new writers, or hitherto unpublished ones, were not only writing fiction but were recording the New Africa." Thus, only two writers reappear in this volume: Bessie Head of South Africa and Assia Djebar of Algeria, and a good many of the authors were born after 1945.

Yemen: Human Rights In Yemen During And After The 1994 War, Sheila Carapico, Jermera Rone

Political Science Faculty Publications

During seventy days of conventional warfare between the government forces commanded by the Republic of Yemen Council President, General ’Ali ’Abdallah Salih, and the separatist southern army fighting in the name of the Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP), the government army won a military victory over the rebels and presided over the destruction of institutions and property of the former YSP-ruled People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen. The terms of national unity between the two Yemens, never fully resolved in either the May 1990 accord or elections in April 1993, were thus settled on the battlefield in favor of Salih’s northern-dominated military …

Literacy Enhancement And Writing Across The Curriculum: A Motivational Addendum, L. Brooks Hill, Sandra L. Ragan Jan 1994

Literacy Enhancement And Writing Across The Curriculum: A Motivational Addendum, L. Brooks Hill, Sandra L. Ragan

Basic Communication Course Annual

This "thought piece" supplements the preceding article with complementary information drawn from a national literacy project underwritten by the Ford Foundation. This project attempted to persuade teachers in all disciplines to become more proficient in the use of written exercises and to encourage an expanded conception of literacy as an essential cornerstone of education. As a part of the writing-across-the curriculum (WAC) efforts, this extensive project helped to organize these efforts by identifying the obstacles to enhanced literacy, specifying innumerable techniques for use in diverse contexts, and motivating faculty to intensify their work on this dimension of any curriculum. This …

The Mormons In Wilhelmie Germany, 1870-1914: Making A Place For An Unwanted American Religion In A Changing German Society, Michael Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Between 1853 and 1914 the kingdom of Prussia and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, disagreed over the issue of Mormon missionaries proselyting in Prussia. In 1853 royal magistrates banished all Mormon missionaries from the kingdom for advocating emigration. A new church policy of preaching without seeking for official permission, in addition to an improved relationship between the Mormons in Utah and the United States government after the Manifesto of 1890, led to an increase in missionaries sent to Germany, including Prussia. By 1900 mormon success alarmed the Prussian Protestant clergy and a few Prussian governors …

A Study Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Resettled And Refugee Cambodians, Jolene Malinee Aitken

Master's Theses

Problem

With the onset of the Cambodian holocaust, as well as over 40 years of continual war in Cambodia, the Khmer people have been subjected to an existence of prolonged exposure to disaster, contributing to the alarming prevalence of the mental health disorder of post-traumatic stress among Cambodians today. Post-traumatic stress disorder is the debilitating syndrome described as the development of characteristic symptoms following a psychologically traumatic event that is generally outside the range of usual human experience (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition revised, [DSM-III-R], 1987). The purpose of this study was to examine the existence …

Otitis Media, Mastoiditis, And Infracranial Lesions In Two Plains Indian Children, Robert W. Mann, Douglas W. Owsley, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

One disease condition that is common to nearly all children is otitis media, also known as middle ear disease. Although most people speak of it as a middle ear "infection," other causes such as neoplasm (tumor) can result in manifestations and symptoms mimicking an infectious process. This paper presents findings related to osseous lesions in two Indian children, approximately three to five years of age, who died with otitis media and infracranial lesions. Through macroscopic and radiographic analysis, it is possible to show that one child probably suffered from tuberculosis and the other from histiocytosis X. From an epidemiological and …

Self-Overcoming In Foucault's Discipline And Punish, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Prisons are veritable universities of crime. Within them young offenders learn both the values and the techniques of hardened criminals. In addition to these lessons in professional ethics and theory, aspiring criminals also get hands-on experience within prison walls, for prisons are also centers of criminal activity: drug and arms trafficking, rape, gang warfare, and murder. And, like all good universities, prisons help their proteges make the contacts they need to further their budding careers.
