The Influence Of Tradition On The Process Of Organizational Change: A Study Of Two Oregon Child Care Centers: Edgefield Lodge, Troutdale, And St. Mary's Home For Boys, Beaverton, Helen Paula Grant

Dissertations and Theses

For over two centuries, child-caring institutions in the United States have helped families care for their children, and have been solicitous as well for the dependent, neglected, and retarded children. Since the founding of the first orphanage in the United States in 1737 by the Ursuline Sisters, after the ravage of an Indian massacre, child care has developed slowly from simple custodial care to institutions giving specialized care in some one single area. This change was a result not only of the need of children for specialized care but also of the advances in the nation's social, economic, and medical …

Social Worker Efficacy In Changing School System Policies, Joan E. Smith Jan 1969

Social Worker Efficacy In Changing School System Policies, Joan E. Smith

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The policies of an organization are the most important component in defining its purpose and setting its priorities. The public school system in Ontario is no exception to this rule. In the past century education in the public domain has made no major changes in its policies. The present authoritarian, tightly constricted, vertical hierarchy is the same organizational structure introduced by Ryerson in the 1850’s. At that time, such a system reflected the prevailing societal purposes and needs. But today the public school system does not function in such a manner as to fill its role in 20th century Canadian …

A Frame Of Reference For The Study Of American Foreign Policy-Making, Robert E. Cecile

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This study outlines a frame of reference which might be helpful to political scientists in the analysis of foreign policy decision-making. It is part of a larger effort which seeks to learn more about state action in general and American foreign policy decision-making in particular.

The approach which is utilized is one devised by Richard C. Snyder. It has been modified by the author lo suit the purposes and objectives of the present study. Basically, the approach is a conceptual scheme which postulates that state action results from the way identifiable, official decision-makers define the situation of action in order …

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research and development (R&D) play an increasingly important role in the economy of the United States. Total expenditures for R&D during the decade of the 1950's were greater than in the entire history of the United States previous to that time. As a percent of gross national product, R&D has grown from 0.2 percent in 1921, to 0.4 to 0.6 percent in the 1930's and 1940's, and is now more than 3 percent.1

Much has been said of the impact that the growth of R&D has on the general economy. R&D had also had a significant economic and sociocultural …

Physician Representation In The National Government: The Washington Office Of The A.M.A., Maria Cherner

Student Scholarship

This report provides a descriptive study of physician representation within the national government, specifically focusing on the structure and history of the American Medical Association Washington Office. The American Medical Association was established in 1847 to elevate medical education standards and promote the interests of the medical profession. Despite its long history, the Association did not establish a formal Washington office until 1944. This development was spurred by a growing need to inform physicians of pending legislation and to bring professional medical opinions to the nation's capital. The office initially operated with a minimal staff under its first director, Dr. …

The Board of Foreign Missions (later, World Missions) was organized by the General Synod in 1832.
