Interdisciplinary Research Methodology For Secondary Level Social Studies: A Teaching Unit Concerning The Holy Shroud Of Turin, Melinda K. Blade Edd

Dissertations

In the past decade, numerous educational leaders have been critical of the quality of achievement of the educational system of the United States. Declining scores on standardized tests and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, illiteracy and the inequality of educational opportunities for America's youth were a few of the concerns documented by educational leaders. In an effort to correct some of the existing problems, reform measures have been delineated by various commissions and educational authorities. The use of interdisciplinary curriculum, particularly in Social Studies, was among the suggestions for improving the quality of education. The purpose of this study was to …

A Widening Horizon Catholic Sisterhoods On The Northern Plains, 1874-1910, Susan C. Peterson Apr 1985

A Widening Horizon Catholic Sisterhoods On The Northern Plains, 1874-1910, Susan C. Peterson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Catholic sisterhoods have been part of American life since the colonial period, first as operators of charitable institutions to aid the needy and then, in the nineteenth century, as teachers of both immigrant children in the East and Indian children at mission schools on reservations in the West. Conventional historical studies have either slighted or ignored their contributions to the settlement of the northern plains, and recent articles on Catholic missions in history journals do little better. In both secular and church histories, Catholic sisters are traditionally pictured as silent representatives of female purity or as extensions of the church …

Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood Apr 1985

Western Women And True Womanhood Culture And Symbol In History And Literature, June O. Underwood

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

History cannot happen," says Henry Nash Smith, "that is, men cannot engage in purposive group behavior without images which simultaneously express collective desires and impose coherence." Although Smith does not mention it, women too engaged in purposive group behavior. They too had images that organized their experiences and gave impetus to action. And since women were part of the great western migration, the images that made sense to them and engaged them in action within the westering experience were formative in their history.1

This article will look at nineteenth-century western women and the symbols that formed their particular history …

Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson Apr 1985

Having A Purpose In Life Western Women Teachers In The Twentieth Century, Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Beginning late in the eighteenth century, social theorists developed an ideology of domesticity, maintaining that women's proper role lay in the care of children, the nurture of the husband, the physical maintenance of the domicile, and the guardianship of both home and social morality.1 Although this ideology helped to propel females into teaching, historians have not agreed on the impact of domestic ideology on women teachers and on the education profession itself. Some scholars conclude that women's easy access to teaching posts turned the classroom into a workshop for motherhood for the average female, perpetuating anti-intellectualism in education to …

The Anchor, Volume 97.17: February 6, 1985, Hope College

The Anchor: 1985

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Transnational Corporations Versus The State: The Political Economy Of The Mexican Auto Industry, D. C. Bennett, Kenneth Evan Sharpe

Political Science Faculty Works

The historical-structural method employed here rejects analyses that are excessively voluntaristic or deterministic. The authors show that while the state was able to mitigate certain adverse consequences of TNC strategies, new forms of dependency continued to limit Mexico's options.

Strategies For Archival Action In The 1980s And Beyond: Implementing The Saa Goals And Priorities Task Force Report, Richard J. Cox

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

This essay is written by an archivist primarily for archivists, but its content concerns a subject--the preservation of America's documentary heritage--that is important to a much wider audience. Archivists have long recognized that theirs is a profession with a broad mandate handicapped by far too limited resources. In the past few years, through a series of major investigations and reports, archivists have learned the extent of the threat to historical records in the United States caused by their profession's own weaknesses. Some will undoubtedly bristle at that last sentence and argue that numerous other reasons exist for the poor condition …

The Evolution In Canada Of The Citizen's Movement Against Nestle, 1978-1984: A Descriptive Study, Deacute Bryant Jan 1985

The Evolution In Canada Of The Citizen's Movement Against Nestle, 1978-1984: A Descriptive Study, Deacute Bryant

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This is an historical study of a social action. The purpose of the study was two-fold: 1) to document the evolution in Canada of the infant formula controversy, and 2) to use the intervention as a case example with which to propose a theoretical model of social action. In Canada the history of the controversy went from 1978 to 1984. During that time action groups for activists and industry reported similar changes in focus. Their targeted audiences changed from being the general public to being the “power elite”: professionals with political clout and money. The primary topics and groups advocated …

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin Jan 1984

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin

The Bridge

In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …

The Dynamics Of Animal Distribution: An Evolutionary/Ecological Model, Charles H. Smith Jan 1984

The Dynamics Of Animal Distribution: An Evolutionary/Ecological Model, Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Investigators have sometimes assumed that the factors underlying animal distribution are too complex to lend themselves to normative modelling. In this work, a model of environment and community interaction is constructed which lends itself to the latter kind of interpretation. It is posed that spatially-varying rates and magnitudes of availability of moisture at given locations act as stresses on the nature of community infrastructure, and secondarily on the rates at which new populations may become integrated into these. Populations are thereby viewed as tending to change range in common directions, though at overall rates remaining peculiar to each. This interpretation …

Going Among Them: The Evolution Of The Home Visit, Terry Holbrook Mar 1983

Going Among Them: The Evolution Of The Home Visit, Terry Holbrook

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The methods, motives and objectives of home visiting have been ignored by most social work historians, while the profession of social work has become almost universally associated with this practice by the public. This paper examines the historical, social, and political implications of home visiting from the founders of the profession to the present day, suggesting a revitalization of this taken for granted practice for the purpose of collecting "social evidence" to be used for social reform.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During 1981 and 1982, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a cultural resources assessment of ca. 30,000 acres leased to the Carter Mining Company in Uvalde and Zavala Counties, Texas. Known as the East Chacon project, the survey was undertaken to identify and assess the cultural resources of the locality prior to potential modification or destruction due to proposed mining operations. Archaeological and historical sites (149) were identified and recorded that represent a span of human activities from approximately 11,000 B.P. to the Historic period. A detailed description of these site locations, interpretations …

Historical Trends In American Animal Use And Perception, Stephen R. Kellert, Miriam O. Westervelt Jan 1983

Historical Trends In American Animal Use And Perception, Stephen R. Kellert, Miriam O. Westervelt

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

The authors analyze the stories on wildlife carried in four newspapers (two urban – LA Times and Hartford Courant, and two rural – Buffalo Bulletin in Wyoming and the Dawson News, Georgia) using randomly sampled issues from 1900 to 1976. The total sample amounted to 4,873 articles from 1,777 issues of the four newspapers covering 75 years. Three periods, 1921-1927, 1930-1936, and 1961-1967 averaged more than 200 articles a year. Coverage of wildlife issues was lowest during the two World War periods. The articles were coded using a standard typology, including utilitarian and humanistic attitudes. Over the 76 years …
