Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt Jan 1988

Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he northern Plains witnessed the last great farm revolt in its history during the 1930s, when a flood of protest spilled across the region, fed by the springs of hard times and earlier insurgencies. The countryside, for one last moment, forced itself upon the rest of the country and demanded attention for its plight. After a period of high visibility, these efforts receded in the wake of New Deal programs that seemingly undercut the rural revolt. Many of the protesters arrived at an accommodation with the new regime, accepting "half-aloaf now" in terms of wheat allotment checks and refinanced …

On Being A Truant: A Phenomenological Study Of Students In A Comprehensive High School, Diane Berger Mcclure Edd

Dissertations

This dissertation was a phenomenological study of eight students in a comprehensive high school who exhibited symptoms of truancy. Student interviews, student journals, and field notes were examined and the content analyzed. Students who began to display a truancy pattern and who have displayed symptoms of truancy in a previous school year were selected from a stratified random sample. Students were chosen to represent the ethnic and gender percentages of their school. During the first months of truancy, behavior modification steps were applied to the students which incorporated successful elements of major exemplary truancy programs. These students having not responded …

This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.

The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

Jan Maria Novotny And His Collection Of Books On Economics, Michael Markowski

The Courier

This article describes the life and books of economist Jan Novotny, whose extensive collection is now housed in the Syracuse University Libraries. Novotny believed that a comprehensive, liberal arts education was an essential prerequisite for anyone who wished to study or professionally practice finance and business. The well-roundedness obtained from the humanities, he argued, would lead those in business and finance to make moral and ehtically sound decisions. His collection covers the last five hundred years, consisting of nearly 6,000 books in many different languages. Novotny managed to flee Czechoslavakia with all of these books, which now provide a wealth …

Improving Articulation Between High School And College, John M. Bradley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the Tennessee State-Wide School-College Collaborative for Educational Excellence, established in 1986 to improve the preparation of high school students entering college. The initiative created six task forces in English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts, composed of secondary and postsecondary educators. Guided by the College Board’s Academic Preparation for College (Green Book) and the subject-specific “Rainbow Series,” the arts task force focused on theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Recommendations emphasized sequential, discipline-based curricula, recognition of theatre as equal to art and music, enhanced teacher training, and competency testing. Sample high school theatre courses …

The Future Of Theatre Education: The Research University, Milly S. Barranger

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article considers the future of theatre education in research universities, emphasizing both opportunities and challenges. Positive developments include the recognition of creative work as equivalent to scholarly research, the establishment of the MFA as a terminal degree in performance and production, and the growing prominence of dramaturgy as a field integrating scholarship with practice. Undergraduate curricula are increasingly modeled on broad-based core requirements, positioning theatre within general education. At the same time, declining budgets, faculty reductions, and overextended programs threaten stability. The article identifies two likely trends: greater emphasis on quality through program evaluation and national visibility, and stronger …

[Review Of] Dennis J. Starr. The Italians Of New Jersey: A Historical Introduction And Bibliography, Lucia C. Birnbaum

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume does not aim to be a definitive history of the Italians of New Jersey, but it is an excellent model of regionally grounded scholarship, offering not only the story of one state, but an excellent synthesis of the scholarship on the Italian role in that "greatest migration of peoples in history" to the new world at the end of the nineteenth century. "From 1891 to 1915 more Italians entered the United States than did immigrants from any other country."

Saudi Arabia’S And Egypt’S Public And School Libraries, Donna Marie Hoeksema Jan 1987

Saudi Arabia’S And Egypt’S Public And School Libraries, Donna Marie Hoeksema

Graduate Research Papers

This research was based on a concern for libraries in third world countries. A study of literature about public and school libraries in two developing countries in the Middle East was conducted. Based on the evidence that certain conditions were present in the United States and Europe before library development began, this researcher isolated eight of these conditions to research whether they were in existence or growing in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Two hypotheses were-tested. First, political stability was evident. Secondly, evidence of growth in the following seven conditions were studied: education, economic growth, government commitment towards libraries, urbanization, presence …

The second investigates problems experienced by the Indochinese, particularly with regard to their health, education, language abilities, and employment and is based on a 1981 needs …

[Review Of] Rodolfo O. De La Garza, Frank D. Bean, Charles M. Bonjean, Ricardo Romo, And Rodolfo Alvarez, Eds. The Mexican American Experience: An Interdisciplinary Anthology, Cary D. Wintz

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Mexican-Americans comprise the second largest minority group in the United States and one of the most rapidly growing elements in the population. Their history in the American southwest goes back almost four hundred years, they have interacted with Anglo·Americans in that region since the early nineteenth century, and have been the most numerous immigrant group coming to the United States since the middle of the twentieth century. Despite this clear evidence of their significance and their impact on this country, scholars in the social sciences have often neglected this ethnic group in their research and writing. This volume makes an …

Public Policy Toward Corporate Takeovers, Murray L. Weidenbaum

It should not be government's role to "do something" about hostile takeovers. Many studies show that more harm than good is done when government interferes. Boards of directors need to realize that they need to make choices that serve the desires of their shareholders.

Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann Feb 1986

Private Human Services In Welfare Society, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is an effort to propose a moderately optimistic future for the personal care sector of human services. It is proposed that the best available future scenario for personal care services between now and the year 2019 is to concentrate on privatization of service delivery on a small-scale basis. Government, in this model should be limited largely to three roles: 1) source of venture capital; 2) regulation of service delivery; and 3) income maintenance for the poorest populations. In this future, the main burden of personal care services will be carried by the private sector. Dramatic improvements in the …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In July 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted archaeological and historical investigations at sites designated as 41 WB 36,41 WB 37, and 41 WB 38, which are located in a residential district on the east side of the town of Laredo, Texas. These sites are represented by late historic foundations which were uncovered after a group of houses were razed to make way for a new toll bridge complex to facilitate international travel between the United States and the Republic of Mexico. A short history of Laredo and of the four house …

The Phd In Theatre — A Vanishing Degree?, Richard Hornby Jan 1986

The Phd In Theatre — A Vanishing Degree?, Richard Hornby

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the decline of doctoral study in theatre and argues for the continued necessity of the PhD as the primary academic credential in the field. The author documents a significant reduction in PhD programs, student enrollments, and degree completions since the late 1970s, and attributes this trend to both broader reductions in humanities hiring and the rapid expansion of MFA programs. The essay contends that many MFA graduates enter academic positions for which they lack sufficient academic and historical preparation, particularly in areas of dramatic literature, theory, and non realistic performance styles. The author asserts that this shift …

The Ritz Bar Or Abd: In Defense Of The Mfa, Peter Garvie Jan 1986

The Ritz Bar Or Abd: In Defense Of The Mfa, Peter Garvie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay argues that the Master of Fine Arts is an appropriate terminal degree for university theatre faculty and challenges the claim that the Doctor of Philosophy represents a superior credential. The author emphasizes the realities of limited employment opportunities in both academic and professional theatre and contends that neither degree guarantees entry into those markets. The essay distinguishes the MFA as an advanced practice degree grounded in performance and production, whereas the PhD certifies research competence and does not necessarily attest to teaching or creative skill. Conservatory style training within a liberal arts setting is presented as legitimate and …
