Explorations In Ethnic Studies
Critique [Of Griggs And Corrothers: Historical Reality And Black Fiction], Gary Okihiro
Critique [Of Griggs And Corrothers: Historical Reality And Black Fiction], Gary Okihiro
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The foregoing essay by James Robert Payne describes two important pieces of Afroamerican literature and places them within their historical context. Payne offers a tantalizing account of those examples of late nineteenth and early twentieth century black nationalist writing; he fails, however, to explain their historical significance in terms of black nationalist thought around the turn of the century.

Critique [Of Griggs And Corrothers: Historical Reality And Black Fiction], Alice A. Deck
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
James Payne's thoughtful and carefully documented essay stresses the importance of evaluating ethnic American, specifically Afroamerican, fiction within its historical context. The historical information he provides in his essay concerning the Afroamerican response to the Spanish-American War and to America's paranoia of a supposed "Yellow Peril" does indeed shed light on how Griggs and Corrothers each imaginatively re-invested a specific social reality with an Afroamerican revolutionary furor-a rage which ironically had the best interest of the country at heart.
Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson
Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
It is sometimes held to be paradoxical that liberal democracy has offered no sound justification of itself. For those who are citizens of liberal democracies, and therefore are concerned not only with the regime of the fatherland but a 1 so with the good regime genus, this paradox causes not only confusion. The citizen is left a so without justification for the patros: his love of the fatherland has then no rational logos. There have been various recent attempts to provide liberal democracy with the justification necessary to survive the attack of various schools. However one assesses …

A History Of The Development And Objectives Of The Lds Church News Section Of The Deseret News, Paul T. Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
The Church News supplement to the Deseret News has been part of the Salt Lake City newspaper for over fifty years. It has evolved from a weekly eight-page tabloid religious section of the daily newspaper to a weekly magazine of feature articles, photographs, editorials and news of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
An historical study of the Church News has not been done previously. Hence, the intent of this study is to observe how the Church News has served its purposes and goals over its history. The study briefly outlines how the publication has developed and will …

The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga
The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the last ten years the "new social history" and its stepchild the "new urban history" have become the dominant sub field s within the history discipline; but the "new rural history" remains an orphan child with little recognized place as yet in academic curricula or historical writings.1 Unlike urban history, which is studied as a coherent whole, aspects of rural history are usually discussed under such rubrics as the westward movement, agricultural history, land history, frontier development, Indian history, and so forth.
The implicit assumption behind this disjointed scholarly perception is that rural history is an incongruity in …

Trouble In River City: An Analysis Of An Urban Vice Probe, Joseph S. Uris
Trouble In River City: An Analysis Of An Urban Vice Probe, Joseph S. Uris
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is an historical case study of a highly publicized investigation of vice and official corruption which took place in Portland, Oregon from 1954 to 1958. Three major relevant areas of social science literature are reviewed. These are: historical material on American reform and corruption, criminology and political science. This literature suggests both the ubiquity and usefulness of vice and corruption in the urban situation.
A set of propositions regarding vice, corruption and reform was developed from these works. These propositions were then examined in terms of the vice probe and political situation in Portland, Oregon.
The triangulation method …
Politics And Medicine In The Estrogen Replacement Controversy: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States And Great Britain, Frances B. Mccrea
Politics And Medicine In The Estrogen Replacement Controversy: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States And Great Britain, Frances B. Mccrea
Masters Theses
This thesis investigated social and medical aspects of the Estrogen Replacement Controversy (ERT) in the United States and Great Britain. American researchers claim that ERT, a treatment for menopausal and postmenopausal problems, substantially increases the risk of endometrial cancer; British researchers minimize the risk and instead emphasize benefits of the treatment. Whereas British medical practitioners are reluctant to prescribe ERT, their American counterparts widely prescribe the treatment. American feminists and consumer groups strongly oppose ERT; similar groups in Britain demand the treatment. Whereas the British government has not regulated the drug, in America, increasing restrictions have been placed on ERT. …
Review Of The Pirst Polish Americans: Silesian Settlements In Texas By T. Lindsay Baker, Maria Starczewska- Lambasa
Review Of The Pirst Polish Americans: Silesian Settlements In Texas By T. Lindsay Baker, Maria Starczewska- Lambasa
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Though sporadic arrivals of Poles into the United States had started much earlier, it was onl y in 1854 that Polish immigration led to the establishment of the first self-contained Polish community and parish. It was perhaps a trick played by history that the first settlements of Silesian Poles sprang up in the San Antonio area of Texas rather than in an area such as Connecticut, which in many respects is geographically more like Poland. The large stream of Polish immigrants arriving in this country in the latter part of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth moved to …
The Changing Family And Family Policy, Ronald J. Mancoske
The Changing Family And Family Policy, Ronald J. Mancoske
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The concern for the loss of family functions ii, the process of social change has led some to call for a family policy to support the family to cope with stress in meeting its basic functions. Change in functioning of the family is inclusive of various spheres: economic, status giving, educational, religious, recreational, protective and affectional. These changes are seen as indicative of the decline in the family. This view is moderated by the spectrum of change in the family interactions. Support for family policy is essential though it can not be developed on the idea of the perilous decline …

An Archaeological Survey Of A Portion Of The Choke Canyon Reservoir Area In Mcmullen And Live Oak Counties, Texas, Alston V. Thoms, John L. Montgomery, Alice W. Portnoy
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
An intensive cultural resource survey was carried out on approximately 2544 hectares (6285 acres) of the proposed Choke Canyon Reservoir by the Cultural Resources Institute (CRI) of Texas Tech University from August through October 1977. The project was undertaken in response to needs of the Bureau of Reclamation. This report is one of a multivolume study.'concerning the area's cultural resources. During the 1977 survey, 113 archaeological sites, 42 low density artifact scatters, and five isolated finds were located and recorded. A no-collection policy was maintained, except isolated finds. In the late fall 1977, 15 of the recorded sites were subjected …
Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton
Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico: A Guide To The Town And Missions, Jack D. Eaton
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions where inheritors of the native cultural tradition began at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the …

Mills found his greatest success as a writer. The author discusses his writings in depth, the influence of John Muir, Mills's activity in creating Rocky Mountain National Park, and his pioneering work with the nature guide concept in the national parks. His writings and career influenced the development of American attitudes toward nature. Based on Mills's writings, secondary sources, contemporary newspapers, and the Enos Mills …

A Socio-Historical Study Of Convict Labor In Iowa, William Farrell
A Socio-Historical Study Of Convict Labor In Iowa, William Farrell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Forms of punishment are historically specific. They are only realized in particular economic, political and ideological conditions. In this sense, imprisonment is a relatively recent historical phenomenon. Its rise can be argued to have accompanied the emergence of a modern capitalist market system. This thesis attempts to merge sociological and historical approaches to the study of penal policy by studying the development of convict labor in the United States and Iowa in relation to the development of the American economy. Convict labor was the country's dominant penal practice from the Civil War to the Great Depression in the United States …
