Entangled Lives In A Southern Metropolis: An Archaeology Of Legacies At 87 Church Street, Charleston, South Carolina (1734-1771), Sarah Platt
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines life at 87 Church Street in downtown Charleston, South Carolina prior to the construction of the standing Heyward-Washington House compound in 1772. The primary data for this study consisted of “legacy” collections, or previously excavated collections that for whatever reason the primary investigator is no longer present. Thus, the primary field site for this project was a museum storeroom and the archive. By revisiting these collections, significant narrative gaps emerged in terms of Black and Indigenous presence on site. As much as the research focus dwelled in the eighteenth century, the “fieldwork” drifted into examining the much …
Defending The Resurrection Of Jesus Through The Reliability Of The Credible Witnesses, Gregory K. Cherven
Defending The Resurrection Of Jesus Through The Reliability Of The Credible Witnesses, Gregory K. Cherven
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the fact that there is sufficient evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ through the reliability of the credible witnesses. Although physical evidence is lacking, it does not mean there is not sufficient evidence. Is it necessary to have physical evidence to secure a conviction? Criminal cases will be explored in which murder convictions were secured without the recovery of a dead body, physical evidence, or a confession. The convictions were secured based solely on witness testimony. The eye-witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus are evaluated through a modern lens and there …

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Displacement From Single Room Occupancy (Sro) Housing, Camilla Cummings
An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Displacement From Single Room Occupancy (Sro) Housing, Camilla Cummings
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing is typically the most affordable and attainable form of housing for low-income people and is often located in desirable areas with access to social infrastructure. Literature shows SRO tenants are marginalized related to their social positionalities (i.e., they are disproportionately Black, elderly, more likely to have mental illness, and be in recovery from substance or alcohol use). Unfortunately, SRO housing has been increasingly lost to for-profit developers. The current study employed a community-based participatory action research approach and qualitative design to explore the subjective experiences of SRO residents’ displacement. An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis approach was …
Constructing A Religious Paradox: The Nauvoo Temple, 1841-1846, Justin R. Bates
Constructing A Religious Paradox: The Nauvoo Temple, 1841-1846, Justin R. Bates
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
While still in poverty and fleeing heavy persecution in 1841, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints committed themselves to an unexpected architectural endeavor. They decided to construct a temple to their God in their newly christened frontier city of Nauvoo, Illinois. What motivated these poor, homeless, persecuted Christians to start construction on such an ambitious project? Though they were being driven from the state, were about to lose the Temple, and had just lost their alleged prophet, they still chose to finish it. Despite significant financial and social challenges, the Latter-day Saints chose to build the …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Objective: Improving facial profile by orthognathic surgery is requested more often by female patients. The aim of this study is to investigate the responses of major labeled landmarks and constructed intermediate points on facial profiles of Class III female patients treated by bimaxillary surgery. Material and methods: 16 skeletal Class III female patients requiring Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy were selected in this study. Cephalometric tracing was carried out, and selected landmarks were digitized. The surgical outcome and the correlation of soft to hard tissue changes were assessed. Results: The surgical result revealed normalized skeletal relationship …
Curriculum Development For Beginning Band: Recruitment And Retention Of Minority Students Living In Poverty, Thomas Andrew Langford
Curriculum Development For Beginning Band: Recruitment And Retention Of Minority Students Living In Poverty, Thomas Andrew Langford
Masters Theses
Despite efforts in many schools to offer quality music education to all students, issues still prevent many minority students from participating in band programs. There are important and unique implications for minority students and students who live in poverty and their ability or desire to participate in a band program. Developing curriculum and teaching strategies to reach minority students and students living in poverty is one way to bridge the educational gap and provide an avenue for students to make a better way for themselves. The study examined existing literature to determine factors attracting or retracting this student population from …
Civic Virtue In America During The Gilded Age, Daniel Gregory Lundstedt
Civic Virtue In America During The Gilded Age, Daniel Gregory Lundstedt
Masters Theses
This study will seek to reevaluate the era which historians have traditionally labeled as the Gilded Age. It will do this through an examination of the state of civic virtue in the United States during this period. This will be accomplished through an interdisciplinary foray into America’s past. From it, hopefully some fresh understandings of what America is, and where it is going, can become apparent. This project falls within the broader exploration of the relationship between the citizen and society and will thus hopefully contribute to that set of literature. This project will be a convergence of several subdisciplines …
The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Instruction On Student Learning Of Fractions In Middle School Mathematics, Rebecca Love Palculict
The Effects Of Computer-Assisted Instruction On Student Learning Of Fractions In Middle School Mathematics, Rebecca Love Palculict
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In today’s increasingly technologically-driven classroom, exploring whether computer-assisted instruction ensures students gain critical mathematic skills is an important area of study. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of computer-assisted instruction in learning manipulation of fractions. This study used archival data collected in August 2021 (pre-test) and January 2022 (post-test). Sixty-nine fifth-grade students in a middle school in rural Mississippi were participants in the study. This quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design analyzed data from the i-Ready diagnostic using an Analysis of Covariance. Results indicated a significant difference between the post-test scores of students who received interventions …
Look North Tokyo: Japanese Business In Post-World War Ii Alaska, Pierce A. Bateman
Look North Tokyo: Japanese Business In Post-World War Ii Alaska, Pierce A. Bateman
Arctic and Northern Studies
Since the early 1950s, Alaska and Japan have engaged in both economic and cultural exchanges that have made lasting impacts on the 49th State. For the nearly 75-year-long relationship, Japan was Alaska's number one trade partner by the measure of its exports, worth at its height in 1992, well over $3 billion. From products like timber, fish, and natural gas, Alaska had the raw resources that Japan lacked, while Japan had the industrial economy that Alaska needed. Diminishing public and scholarly interest of Alaska-Japan relations, however, has resulted in the neglect of this recent period of Alaska's economic and diplomatic …

Redefining Femininity: American Women In Paris In The 1920s, Lauren O'Neill, Michael Gonzalez Phd, Kathryn Statler Phd
Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
Abstract: During the interwar period, from 1918 to 1939, the roles of women experienced change as the traditional gender stereotype of male dependency shifted to female independence and power. Much of this shift can be attributed to the women who found refuge in Paris during this time. Of the many women who realized their independence during the 1920s, Americans Gertrude Stein, Josephine Baker, and Zelda Fitzgerald stand out as trailblazers and examples of those women who reimagined the female role. Coming out of World War I, most of the Western world valued conformity, patriotism, and tradition, however, the "Lost Generation" …
Not Damsels In Distress: Women And The Video Game Industry, Abby Jayne Pucik
Not Damsels In Distress: Women And The Video Game Industry, Abby Jayne Pucik
Student Theses and Dissertations
Men often designed video games as a masculine technology, but there is nothing innately masculine about video games. Games have been socially constructed in design rooms, advertisements, and by the users. The work of the earliest women game designers pushed the boundaries of game making as a form of human technological expression, proving that video games were socially constructed. Despite those efforts, marketers failed to portray women in gaming. Early gaming advertisements used women as background decoration in arcade flyers that catered to men consumers. This objectification of women stimulated a culture in which men perceived themselves to be the …

Fredric Jameson And Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’S Periodizing The Black Internal Colony, Jeremy Matthew Glick
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In “Fredric Jameson and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s Periodizing the Black Internal Colony,” Jeremy Matthew Glick reads these authors’ coupling of Black radical struggle with wars of decolonization as engaging against a twenty-first century war on revolutionary memory. This essay examines Jameson’s brief “Maoist Digression” in “Periodizing the Sixties” and discussion of Cuban Revolutionary Foco-theory as “neither in […] nor of it” and Spivak’s planetary turn’s link to Black internal colonialism analysis as a way to talk about the intersections of revolutionary politics and literary form. It concludes with a brief meditation on Amiri Baraka on the centrality of space for …
