Quaestio Disputata: Delayed Hominization--A Rejoinder To Thomas Shannon, Mark Johnson
Quaestio Disputata: Delayed Hominization--A Rejoinder To Thomas Shannon, Mark Johnson
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Thomas Shannon's response to my article ranges over our disagreements, but the core disagreement, the one with the heaviest moral fallout, concerns the unity or individuality of the preimplantation embryo. One's position here largely dictates whether its manipulation or destruction is morally licit. That core disagreement is the focus of this rejoinder.

John Courtney Murray And The Dilemma Of Religious Toleration, Gerard V. Bradley
John Courtney Murray And The Dilemma Of Religious Toleration, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
John Courtney Murray and the Dilemma of Religious Toleration. By Keith J. Pavlischek. Thomas Jefferson University Press. 290 pages. $22.50.
Keith Pavlischek's valuable book advances the Murray discussion right where Murray's writings most repay careful reading: religious liberty. Pavlischek, an evangelical Protestant, analyzes Murray's published and unpublished writings on religious liberty, and examines his role in the drafting and revision of Vatican II's Dignitatis Humanae. Pavlischek notes that Murray was not entirely pleased with DH. But Pavlischek's is the best discussion of just how the moral-theological defense of religious freedom advanced by the French prevailed over Murray's view …

This Article looks at the conflict between religious authority and liberal politics from a point of view within the Catholic Church. It examines the grounds of the teaching authority asserted by the Church, the scope and strength of that authority, and the possibility that obedience to authority will create dilemmas for religiously committed public officials. For purposes of illustration it uses New York Governor Mario Cuomo's religious and political observations on the subject of abortion.
Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin
Stoical Sanctity: The Ethics Of Virtue And The Theology Of Robertson Davies, Eric Richard Griffin
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Robertson Davies is, by his own definition and admission, both a religious novelist and a moralist. His writings evince a consistent theology that, aside from one or two departures, is quite within the liberal protestant tradition, despite his own claims to unorthodoxy. His theology is a moral theology, and the ethical theory or method most in keeping with Davies‘ approach is the "virtue" or "character" model. His claims of dualism and unorthodoxy have been seen to exhibit a "contemporary gnostic spirit," but it is my assertion that they do not; the teachings of the ancient Stoics, however, are much in …
Current Models In Roman, Lutheran, And Reformed Prolegomena: Exposition, Analysis, And Programmatic Assessment, David Lumpp
Current Models In Roman, Lutheran, And Reformed Prolegomena: Exposition, Analysis, And Programmatic Assessment, David Lumpp
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The marketplace is currently experiencing no shortage of systematic theologies. At both the popular and academic levels, volumes are published at a rate exceeding the ability of any one scholar to digest or evaluate. The methodological pluralism alluded to above is now a cacophony. Yesterday’s mentors are challenged by process theology, theologies of hope, and seemingly infinite manifestations of liberation theology--to name only several of the most obvious.
With this history and the above cautions in mind, this essay will explore the definition, guiding motif, and methodology of three major contemporary theologians: Bernard Lonergan, Helmut Thielicke, and Edward Farley, representing …

Justification In The Eastern Orthodox Churches (A Comparative Study), Eshetu Abate
Justification In The Eastern Orthodox Churches (A Comparative Study), Eshetu Abate
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The topic of this Thesis, Justification in the Eastern Orthodox Churches, is prompted by the document which recently came out of the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue on the doctrine of Justification by faith alone, work which took more than five years ending in September 1983. To one who comes from the East, especially from Ethiopia, a country where half of the population is Orthodox, the reading of the publicity on this dialogue and its outcome raised the question: "How do the Orthodox Churches in the East think about justification by faith alone?" The incubation of this idea yielded the present …
The Unity Of The Virtues In Abelard's Dialogus, G. Scott Davis
The Unity Of The Virtues In Abelard's Dialogus, G. Scott Davis
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
That a thinker discusses a topic is often noted, while how he discusses that topic is left insufficiently clear. A case in point is Peter Abelard, "who," D. E. Luscombe has claimed, "first in his time attempted a serious philosophical discussion of natural virtue and who first really put the human virtues upon the theological map." Despite continuing interest in Abelard, and his ethics in particular, little has been done to illuminate what he takes a virtue to be, how the virtues are interrelated, and how Abelard's account compares to other treatments of the virtues. This paper attempts, if only …

A Theological Method For Legal Education, Raymond C. O'Brien
A Theological Method For Legal Education, Raymond C. O'Brien
Scholarly Articles
Is it possible to engraft theology' into legal education? Does the law school seeking to inculcate any particular theology into its curriculum jeopardize the fabric of legal education? Are theology and law irretrievably broken, one to speak only of the things of God and the other to speak of Caesar? Finally, if there is to be interaction between law and theology within the context of legal education, is there a methodology that can offer significant and fruitful dialogue? This is the real issue.
