“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr. Jan 2023

“That They All May Be One”: A Virtuous Community, A Paradigm For Environmental Sustainability, Abundio R. Babor Jr.

Landas

The impact of human actions on the environment has created a myriad of problems. We need a moral paradigm that can facilitate an essential and substantial transformation to recover the bond between one another in the common home. Communal and environmental sustainability happens when human beings in the community live prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity. A virtuous community focused on the habitual practice of the virtues sustains the environment because when human beings treat each other prudently, justly, steadfastly, and moderately with faith, hope, and charity, they act in the same manner toward non-human species. …

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao Jan 2023

A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life On Nuclear Energy: Exploring The Moral Implications Of The Revival Of The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, Archie R. Magarao

Landas

This paper critically examines the moral implications of reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) through the lens of the Reframed Consistent Ethic of Life (RCEL). While the Philippine government highlights its potential economic benefits, the study raises serious concerns about nuclear waste and its risks to human and nonhuman life. It evaluates both the advantages and dangers of nuclear energy, emphasizing threats to ecological integrity and long-term safety. The paper also questions the adequacy of existing plans for nuclear waste disposal, particularly in light of geopolitical and security challenges. In response, it proposes key moral perspectives: rethinking God’s presence …

Commercialization Of Separated Human Body Parts - Unpacking Instrumentalization Approach, Arseny Shevelev, Georgy Shevelev Jan 2023

Commercialization Of Separated Human Body Parts - Unpacking Instrumentalization Approach, Arseny Shevelev, Georgy Shevelev

Pace International Law Review

The principle of non-commercialization, which prohibits trade in separated human body parts, has long been firmly embedded in many European legal orders and has become an integral part of them. However, many new uses for human biomaterials have now been discovered, and the need for them has reached a historical climax. This paper aims to explain the main tenets of non-commercialization theory, including such principles as human dignity and need to protect human’s health, and to show that these categories have so far been understood in a very one-sided and visceral way, and largely in contradiction to their true spirit. …

Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta Jan 2023

Foundations And Principles Of A Reframed Consistent Ethic Of Life, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta

Landas

Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s Consistent Ethic of Life (CEL) is a moral vision that can be used to uphold the value and dignity of human life consistently in all its stages and circumstances. However, it must be reframed to acknowledge the new ways in which life is threatened today; these include the modern ecological crisis of our common home. This essay seeks to paint a more concrete picture of a reframed CEL. The first part rebuilds the original foundations of Bernardin’s moral vision in light of the crisis of our common home. The second part identifies and reframes principles from Catholic …

Catholic Higher Education And Student Formation In A Post-Roe World: A Modest Proposal For Women’S Personhood And Reproductive Autonomy, M.T. Davila Jan 2023

Catholic Higher Education And Student Formation In A Post-Roe World: A Modest Proposal For Women’S Personhood And Reproductive Autonomy, M.T. Davila

Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications

Student formation is a key missional goal for Catholic colleges and universities. In many instances this involves requiring coursework in theology and ethics that exposes students to the essentials of the tradition and key themes of Christian life such as vocation, marriage, family, work, and society. And yet, historically we fail to consider the changing landscape of life in community, especially for women and other gender minorities. The personhood of women and reproductive autonomy, both topics that have been tangled in the culture war of the abortion debate, is a particular challenge to the goal of formation. The US Supreme …

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso Jan 2023

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the evolution of the understanding of the common good in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) from John Paul II to Francis. I demonstrate that while the vision of John Paul II on the common good stressed the principle of solidarity for the good of all people and each individual, Francis made a significant change by expanding the concept of common good beyond the human good to an integral ecology. The principles of common good and solidarity are essentially related in the social vision of John Paul II. Solidarity is “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself …

We Live In The Olden Days: Reflections On The Importance Of Scientific And Theological Humility, Steven L. Clark Jan 2023

We Live In The Olden Days: Reflections On The Importance Of Scientific And Theological Humility, Steven L. Clark

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have a unique perspective on truth. Our knowledge that Salvation likely involves participation in complex eternal activities requiring significantly more understanding than we currently possess naturally leads us to seek truth and, in addition, to seek an understanding of that truth. Under these circumstances, our inability to fully understand many truths, both revealed and discovered, can lead to confusion. A lack of complete understanding of accepted scientific truth generally leads the serious truth-seeker to enhanced investigative and educational efforts without doubting the ultimate veracity of the concept under investigation; we …

A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta Jan 2023

A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta

Theology Department Faculty Publications

This essay proposes Joseph Cardinal Bernardin''s consistent ethic of life (CEL) as a moral framework for Philippine Church leadership to consider and adapt as it engages with social issues. The paper begins by presenting the dual and inconsistent approaches of Philippine Church leadership to political engagement. This would be followed by a presentation of the key ideas of the CEL from which leaders of the Philippine Church can learn as well as how these can help renew the Philippine Church's vision of responding to the signs of the times; especially in terms of consistency. The paper concludes by proposing some …

Forming The Conscience Of Young Vietnamese, Thien Duc Vu Jan 2023

Forming The Conscience Of Young Vietnamese, Thien Duc Vu

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Many current theories (e.g., individualism, materialism, relativism, etc.) exalt individual freedom as an absolute. They ignore the voice of universal truth as a principle of conscience and instead place conscience underneath individual choice. The concept of individual freedom in this way is influencing the conscience of many young Vietnam people to make decisions that destroy and jeopardize moral human life (e.g., abortion, transgender, same-sex marriage, murder, etc.). Educating young people to see themselves as God’s children by forming their conscience is an urgent obligation for the Vietnamese Catholic Church. Thus, my PSP is to follow past practices of the Church’s …

Sacred Lives: A Study On The Spiritual Needs Of Lgbtq+ Students And Possible Responses By Catholic High Schools, Jennifer Marie Farrell Jan 2023

Sacred Lives: A Study On The Spiritual Needs Of Lgbtq+ Students And Possible Responses By Catholic High Schools, Jennifer Marie Farrell

Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects

In this project, I examined the spiritual care offerings available to LGBTQ+ students in Catholic high schools in the state of Washington and potential best practices. Through a convergent mixed methods approach to gathering information on spiritual care, both public and clandestine, I sourced several methods of inquiry to analyze data and make recommendations. Using a survey of all fifteen Category I and Category II Catholic high schools in Washington, I collected data from administrators, counselors, campus ministers, and diversity equity inclusion (DEI) directors about spiritual care efforts in catholic high schools. Concurrently, two listening sessions were held with six …

Connatural Knowledge Of The Natural Law, Turner C. Nevitt Jan 2023

Connatural Knowledge Of The Natural Law, Turner C. Nevitt

Philosophy: Faculty Scholarship

This paper traces the basic contours of Aquinas’s account of connatural knowledge in order to see what role (if any) connaturality might play in our knowledge of the precepts of the natural law. It engages a dispute between Maritain and Doolan on this topic. After considering what Aquinas means by “connaturality” in general the paper examines the main elements of his view of knowledge by connaturality in particular. I argue that the true doctrine of Aquinas probably lies between Maritain and Doolan’s opposed interpretations. Although it is not the only way of doing so, connaturality or inclination would still seem …

Family As A School Of Social Virtues And The Mission Of Social Transformation Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Trieu M. Nguyen Jan 2023

Family As A School Of Social Virtues And The Mission Of Social Transformation Of The Catholic Church In Vietnam, Trieu M. Nguyen

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This dissertation explores the Church’s ability to effectively communicate Catholic Social Teaching (CST) principles to its followers in Vietnam. Using virtue ethics as a guide, I argue that the social vocation of the Christian family can become a potential channel for applying the principles of CST to the daily life of believers. The dissertation employs the See–Judge–Act method to assess and discern the current reality and proposes some family practices. Discerning the negative and positive signs of time through the lens of historical, sociological, and political studies, I propose that one way the Church enables its believers to engage more …

Ethical Lawyering: The Role Of Honor, Conscience, And Codes (Reviewing Michael S. Ariens, The Lawyer’S Conscience: A History Of American Lawyer Ethics), Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Michael Ariens’ new book, The Lawyer’s Conscience: A History of American Lawyer Ethics, is a monumental work, rooted in his decades of excellent scholarship in the fields of attorney professional responsibility and legal history. The Lawyer’s Conscience captures the great sweep and key features of the roughly 250-year period in American legal ethics running from colonial times to the present day. Richly detailed and vividly presented, the story takes the reader on a grand tour of the landmark events and changing ideas that have defined the aspirations, responsibilities, and accountability of members of the American legal profession.

Reconstructing The Kantian Ends Of Reason: Holiness Analytically Entailing Beatitude In An Eternal Highest Good, Anthony Gudwien Jan 2023

Reconstructing The Kantian Ends Of Reason: Holiness Analytically Entailing Beatitude In An Eternal Highest Good, Anthony Gudwien

Dissertations

This dissertation argues that an eternal highest good is the final end of sensible, rational agents. This final end occurs in a noumenal world – what I have labelled World Four – that has holiness analytically entailing beatitude. However, before meritorious moral agents are incorporated into this final noumenal world, they will exist in three prior worlds. World One is our current phenomenal world where sensible, rational agents can adopt a maxim to resolutely pursue holiness. World Two, which is made possible by the immortal soul postulate, is where sensible, rational agents continue their resolute pursuit in order to become …

A Discourse Of Modernization Of Religion In The Soviet Ukrainian Study Of Religion, Oleg Kyselov Jan 2023

A Discourse Of Modernization Of Religion In The Soviet Ukrainian Study Of Religion, Oleg Kyselov

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The paper explores the Soviet scientific atheism discourse on the evolution of religion in the modern world. The author argues that the modernization of religion was a key concept for Soviet scholars, which was used to criticize religious trends of that time.

The article focuses on the published works of Soviet Ukrainian scholars, which discussed the definition of modernization of religion, its reasons, and the spheres of its manifestation. The current research focuses on the modernization of religion and the peculiarities of scientific atheism in Soviet Ukraine.

The author argues that there were no differences between religious modernism and modernization …

The Security Dimensions Of Religious Life In Ukraine: A Focus On Orthodoxy In The Cross-Border Chernivtsi Region, Oleksandr Brodetskyi, Iryna Horokholinska

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes the modern tendencies in the religious space of Ukraine with a focus on the processes that are taking place in Orthodoxy in the context of transformations in the self-identification of the faithful. Changes in the jurisdictional affiliation of the Orthodox communities in Ukraine are taken into account. The dynamics of these processes are analyzed against the background of the full-scale war that Russia has unleashed and is waging against Ukraine. Special attention is paid to the situation in Chernivtsi border region, in particular, from the point of view of the Ukrainian-Romanian geopolitical and church relationships. A number …

The First Jesuits And The First Jesuit Universities, Paul Grendler Dec 2022

The First Jesuits And The First Jesuit Universities, Paul Grendler

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

John W. O’Malley S. J. in The First Jesuits described well the basic principles of the Jesuit educational ministry that shapeed Jesuit schools and universities. He did not discuss what constituted a Jesuit university because that was not the purpose of the book. After assessing the major contributions that O’Malley made to define the principles of Jesuit education, this article will pick up where O’Malley left off by describing the first Jesuit universities. There was not a single model of a Jesuit university. Instead, the Jesuits taught in four kinds of universities: the all-Jesuit university, the civic-Jesuit collegiate university, the …
