The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte Oct 1949

The Message Of The First Epistle Of Peter For Our Day, Eric R. Malte

Concordia Theological Monthly

The purpose of this essay is to interpret and illuminate one of the New Testament Epistles which focuses to a rare degree the interests, needs, and problems of the Church of the first century, and gives classical expression to the teachings of Christ and His Apostles in regard to them. These interests, needs, and problems are not greatly different from those which confront thoughtful Christian men and women the world over today. Of this First Epistle of Peter, Luther once said: “It is one of the noblest books of the New Testament, and the true, pure Gospel."

Announcement Of Sermon Studies For The Next Church Year, Richard R. Caemmerer Sep 1949

Announcement Of Sermon Studies For The Next Church Year, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

For the next Church Year contributors are preparing a series of studies similar to the current type. Most comments from our readers have expressed approval, and we hope that these studies will prove increasingly stimulating. For the next Church Year we are offering texts on the Gospels. We have made the effort to provide texts which have not been treated in the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY or the Concordia Pulpit during the past five years - at least not on that day. This year we propose to insert a paragraph concerning illustrations.

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder Sep 1949

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second reason why we refuse to have anything to do with developing the doctrine is that the development of the Christian doctrine simply means the destruction of the Christian doctrine. "He who sets out to improve the Scriptural doctrines is losing the doctrines. 'Progress' is here only a euphemism for retrogression; 'development' is a misnomer for destruction." (Proc., Westena. District, 1897, p. 68.) Or, as Dr. Pieper puts it: "That there can be no development of the Christian doctrine is evidenced by the patent fact that whenever men set out to develop the doctrine, they invariably pervert and destroy …

Sermon Study On 2 Kings 14:8-9, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

This text contains one of the shortest parables of Scripture. One verse tells the story. Its brevity, however, does not impair its dramatic effectiveness. In one telling blow it delivers a graphic, cutting lesson on a deep-rooted evil of human nature.
