Augustana Ii: Of Original Sin, Martin H. Franzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
The very position of the article on original sin in the Augsburg Confession indicates the importance that the doctrine of original sin had for the consciousness of the Reformation. "We turn from God to man; here the peculiarity of the Lutheran Confession confronts us: we cannot speak of God without thinking also of ourselves. God and our ‘I’ belong intimately together." "Over against life as it should be there is life as it ought not to be." And so when the Augsburg Confession speaks of man, it speaks of sin, or better, of sinners, for it speaks personally and concretely …

Notes On Luther's Interpretation Of John 6:47-58, John Theodore Mueller
Notes On Luther's Interpretation Of John 6:47-58, John Theodore Mueller
Concordia Theological Monthly
Christ's discourse in John 6: 47-58 is no doubt one· of the most striking and challenging appeals from the lips of our Savior that are recorded in the Four Gospels.
It constitutes the climax in a long and earnest address delivered by our Lord when His Jewish followers, impressed by the amazing miracle of the feeding of more than five thousand in the wilderness with five loaves and two fishes, came to Capernaum to take Him by force and make Him their King, not indeed because they believed in Him as the promised Messiah, but, as Jesus frankly told them, …

Luther's Endorsement Of The "Confessio Bohemica.", Jaroslav Pelikan Jr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
As a result of the research that has been carried on in the past half century on the theology of the Reformation. we are now in an advantageous position for a historical and theological evaluation of the faith of the Reformers. What began as purely historical investigation has become instead a recovery of Reformation insights that had been lost in the intervening centuries. For this reason contemporary theological scholarship has been compelled to buttress its systematic presentations with historical material and to make its historical study relevant by drawing theological conclusions from it.

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder
No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder
Concordia Theological Monthly
There is a third reason why we cannot engage in the development of doctrine. Our time and energies are so completely occupied with the study of the Word of God and the old doctrine of the Church that we have not a moment's time to expend on the business of further developing the doctrine. We read in the Proceedings of the Michigan District, 1897, page 36: "We all need to deepen our understanding of the doctrine. Let no man think that he has fully understood the whole doctrine. In this life we shall never reach that point. We know the …
