The Kingdom Of Heaven Or The Kingdom Of God In The New Testament, William F. Doeling Apr 1935

The Kingdom Of Heaven Or The Kingdom Of God In The New Testament, William F. Doeling

Bachelor of Divinity

Today with ever greater insistence is urged the question, “What is the Kingdom of God?" The question is evidently prompted by a dissatisfaction with former definitions. A new definition is wanted, a new interpretation of the Kingdom and the Gospel of the Kingdom is sought. It is not enough to answer that God is unchangeable, His purposes and Kingdom likewise. No, the question must be answered again.

The Deity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Thomas Coates Apr 1935

The Deity Of Christ According To The Epistle To The Hebrews, Thomas Coates

Bachelor of Divinity

The title and the contents of the Epistle prove that the addressees were Jewish Christians, and the emphasis placed on the temple worship points to the fact that they residents of Palestine, especially of Jerusalem. The letter constitutes a warning to the Jewish Christians to remain steadfast in their adherence to Christ, amid all the vicissitudes of life. They should not relapse into their former mode of worship, naturally meaningful and dear to them as it was, for Christ is the fulfilment of the Old Testament symbolism, and the new covenant is superior to the old. The Epistle was probably …

Melanchthon And Luther's Translation Of The New Testament, H. O. Keinath Nov 1934

Melanchthon And Luther's Translation Of The New Testament, H. O. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Philip Schwartzerd changed his German name to Melanchthon, this act might have been considered symbolic of the linguistic interest which was to be dominant throughout his life: Greek. As a student of Greek he proved to be the ready helper who enlisted much technical knowledge of the language in the service of Luther's translation of the New Testament. True it is, Luther was the translator, but he was a translator who did not hesitate to draw upon reliable information wherever he found it in order to produce an adequate version. Melanchthon therefore became one of the great colaborers of …

The Story Of Joseph In The Light Of Recent Research, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The most striking proof in support of the view that the development of Hebrew into a literary language from the Canaanite dialect spoken by the Hebrews was effected in an Egyptian environment is that the Joseph and Exodus narratives, in which Israel is shown in direct contact with Egypt, reflect clearly the spirit of an Egyptian environment and display visible traces of Egyptian influence.

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his thirteenth sermon on the life of Luther, Mathesius remarks: ''In my youth I saw on un-German German Bible, undoubtedly translated from the Latin, which was very dark indeed; for at that time the learned men did not have much regard for the Bible. My father also had a German postil, in which, besides the Gospels of the Sundays, several passages from the Old Testament were explained in postil form, from which I often read to him with great delight." At the same time the father of this pupil of Luther often expressed the wish that he might sec …

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

For the student of the Bible and its various translations and versions it is most stimulating to be told by scholars who know the field that, in addition to more than a score of Psalters which have till now been found complete or in parts, and at least a dozen renderings of other parts of Holy Scripture, as we have seen, there is an immense field of study in the history of the German Bible whom possibilities arc not yet exhausted.

Among the many remarkable books which were produced during the golden age of Latin literature there is none which in point of interest and appeal exceeds the little book of forty-six short chapters written by Tacitus and entitled De Germania (an account of the country of Germany). In this book he gives the general boundaries of the country inhabited by the Germanic tribes; he describes the political and mental characteristics of these strange Northern people, the sources of their wealth, their military equipment and prowess, the influence and sacred character of their women, their gods and their modes of worship, …

Tertulliani "Apologeticum", M. S. Sommer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Tertullian's Apologeticum is justly renowned. It is renowned because of its author, Tertullian, who because of the diction, style, extent, and time of his writings is recognized generally as the father of Church Latin. There is no doubt that later writers, among them men of such importance as St. Augustine, Ambrose, and Cyprian, were influenced by him. Of Cyprian it is said that be called Tertullian simply the teacher. And yet, important as all the writings of Tertullian are, many of them have now lost their claim to the attention of all except the specialist and the historian. But not …

The New Testament In The Light Of Recent Discoveries, Francis E. Zummach Jul 1933

The New Testament In The Light Of Recent Discoveries, Francis E. Zummach

Bachelors’ Theses

The New Testament! The most important book in the world! With it, Christianity stands; without it, Christianity falls! Ignoring the overwhelming and impregnable proofs by which it was clearly demonstrated that the Gospels are genuine, that the authors are trustworthy and that the documents are complete, a certain class of "critical" scholars sought to impugn the authenticity of this book of books by aiming the shafts of their criticism against its strange style, crooked grammar, unintelligible words, and the late date of the manuscript evidence. Year by year the attacks grew in volume and boldness, until suddenly the critics were …

The So-Called "Christian Interpolations" In Josephus, P. E. Kretzmann Apr 1933

The So-Called "Christian Interpolations" In Josephus, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

A number of factors have combined to make a short article on the probability of Christian interpolations in Josephus, especially in his Antiquities of the Jews, desirable. For one thing, the number of recent books on Josephus and his works is surprisingly large, a fact which shows that scholars are taking a new interest in this field of history and criticism.

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Apr 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

The brunt of the assault on the Old Testament is directed not so much against its language or its history as ultimately against its theology. While the Scriptures of the Old Covenant (Ex.17, 14; Deut. 31, 9; etc.) claim to be products of a direct and divine revelation and are thus acknowledged by our Lord Himself and by His apostles (2 Tim. 3, 16), it has become the avowed objective of criticism to remove any distinguishing criteria of the divine and to eliminate the conception of any direct and exclusive revelation on which Israel's religion is based.

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Mar 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second function of avenging archeology has been the tearing down of that amazing scaffold of theories on which a skeptical criticism has sought to reconstruct the Biblical narratives according to the blue-prints of its tendential theorization.

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

When, at the middle of the last century, the epoch-making excavations in the Mesopotamian Valley lengthened the historical perspective and pushed back the horizon of the ancient Orient, these archeological discoveries were hailed with mixed feelings. An attitude of doubt and suspicion clashed with an exaggerated credulity.

A Typical Instance Of Exaggeration In The Moden Literary Criticism Of The Pentateuch, Walter A. Maier Apr 1932

A Typical Instance Of Exaggeration In The Moden Literary Criticism Of The Pentateuch, Walter A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

If the reasons advanced for the composite authorship of the Pentateuch are summarized, it will be evident that they may be reduced, as Driver (Literature of the Old Testament, p. 8) admits, to these two ''phenomena" allegedly betraying distinct documents or sources: "1) The same event is doubly recorded; 2) the language, and frequently the representation as well, varies in different sections."

The Difficult Verses Of The Song Of Deborah Expounded, E A. Schack Apr 1931

The Difficult Verses Of The Song Of Deborah Expounded, E A. Schack

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to give a translation of the entire Song and offer a tenable solution of the linguistic difficulties found therein, established on sound biblical exegesis, and not by corrupting the text, as critics have done and yet do; for that mititates against the clear conception or Holy Writ.

Luther's Use Of Medieval Latin Hymns, P E. Kretzmann Apr 1931

Luther's Use Of Medieval Latin Hymns, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther possessed a versatile genius of surprising fertility. His university training had been almost entirely in the field of the humanities and in philosophy, and he had taken up theology only while acting as instructor at the universities of Wittenberg and of Erfurt; and yet he became one of the most profound theologians of the entire Christian era. He was no philologian, and yet he was able, chiefly on the basis of the most intensive form of home training, to present some of the most thorough linguistic discussions, in Greek and Hebrew as well as in Latin and German, which …

Holiness And The Greek Tongue, Newton Wray Jan 1930

Holiness And The Greek Tongue, Newton Wray

Books by Taylor faculty, staff, and administrators

The advent of Jesus Christ occurred at a date described as "the fulness of time," signifying not only an hour for the fulfillment of prophecy but also that providential preparation which predisposed to the reception of Christianity and facilitated its spread among men.

The factors in this preparation may be included under four general heads:

1. The moral state of the world.
2. The Roman Empire.
3. The Greek language.
4. The location of Jewish Synagogues everywhere.

The Virgin Birth Of Christ, Edgar Reinhold Pflug

Bachelor of Divinity

It shall be our object to trace the history of the controversy over this doctrine from its very beginnings to the present time; to state briefly and to refute the arguments of the opposition; and finally to search out the true Biblical version of the Lord’s birth, of which we are confident that it will also be the view upheld by the Lutheran Church from its very inception.
