Lutheranism In India, Herbert M. Zorn Nov 1952

Lutheranism In India, Herbert M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Lutherans in India have become a considerable factor among Christians. The first Protestant missionaries, Ziegenbalg and Pluetschau, were Lutherans. Lutheran missionaries had a strong influence in the early work of some of the non-Lutheran missions in South India. They can be found in the southern tip near Nagercoil, north and east of Calcutta near the Burma border, in central India. and even in Pakistan. There are Lutherans who speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Santali, Briya and several other languages and dialects. There are missions with only a little over two hundred members, and missions which have been replaced almost completely …

Implications Of The Iconoclastic Controversy For The East-West Schism, Warren G. Rubel Jun 1952

Implications Of The Iconoclastic Controversy For The East-West Schism, Warren G. Rubel

Bachelor of Divinity

For nearly a century and a half (726-842) there took place in the Eastern Roman Empire what is termed the Iconoclastic Controversy. This controversy, concerning the use of the icon in the cultic life of the Church, not only contained elements which had significance for the development of the Eastern branches of Christianity, but also brought to a head factors which were to be contributory to the final breach between Eastern and Western Christendom. It is the proposed task of the present thesis to suggest and trace the possible causes and factors which crystallized in the Iconoclastic Controversy and which …

The Koranic Doctrine Of Sin, Roland E. Miller Jun 1952

The Koranic Doctrine Of Sin, Roland E. Miller

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem that was the occasion for the writing of this thesis is indicated by the title - namely, what is the teaching of sin as it is set forth in the Koran, the Holy Book of Mohammedanism. The problem may be a strictly academic one; but for the writer the problem is one of more than casual importance, since he is a representative of the Christian Church. And the Christian Church in its effort to present the Gospel to Islam, must be vitally concerned with the concept of sin as it is to be found in that theological system.

The Use Of Filmstrips In Adult Education In The Church, Marvin Suhr

Bachelor of Divinity

This study was confined to one medium in the visual aid field, the filmstrip. In God’s divine way He has given man a number of tools and a variety of agencies for bringing himself and His gospel to mankind. The filmstrip is one of these tools.

Velikovsky And The Hebrew Bible, Carl Gaenssle Feb 1952

Velikovsky And The Hebrew Bible, Carl Gaenssle

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some time ago Velikovsky's Worlds in Collision• created quite a stir in some circles. It is not the purpose of this article to examine this book in all its aspects. The author has limited himself to an examination of Velikovsky's use and application of the Hebrew Old Testament, to which he so frequently appeals as illustrating his theories and supporting his contentions.

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr. Jan 1952

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

Of the great unsettled problems of archaeology and anthropology perhaps the most hotly debated has been the relative importance of migration, diffusion, and independent invention in the origin of culture elements. The question has obvious importance, both for a proper understanding of man and culture, that ambitiously comprehensive goal of modern anthropology, and for historical reconstruction, the latter a necessary preliminary of the former.

The concern of this thesis is with culture movement in the eastern Pacific Ocean area. The Pacific area as a whole has long been the geographical center of the diffusion problem (if we may so term …

Luke 17: 20-21 In Recent Investigations, Paul M. Bretscher Dec 1951

Luke 17: 20-21 In Recent Investigations, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is the significant passage recorded only by Luke and rendered in the KJ version: "When He was demanded of the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said: The Kingdom of God cometh not with observation; neither shall they say, Lo, here! or, Lo, there! for, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you." The passage poses a number of linguistic and exegetical difficulties.

God's Triumphant Captive Christ's Aroma For God. (2 Cor. 2:12-17.), Victor Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

The teacher to whom we offer this eucharisterion has lived and labored among us as "God's triumphant captive" and "Christ's aroma for God." In discussing the Scripture passage giving us this view of the ministerial office we hope to do so in a bit of the practical manner which has always characterized the Scripture interpretation of our colleague.

Before we take up the passage, it will be useful for us to look at the wider as well as the narrower context.

A Remedy For Modern Chaos-Luther's Concept Of Our Calling, O. C. Rupprecht Nov 1951

A Remedy For Modern Chaos-Luther's Concept Of Our Calling, O. C. Rupprecht

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is one of the ironies of history that modern American civilization, noted for educational activity unequaled in extent, if not in quality, in any previous era, has arrived at a point of development notable for disillusionment, bewilderment, confusion, anxiety, fear, terror, and despair, which are also unparalleled, if not intensively then certainly extensively, in any former epoch.

Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram Sep 1951

Brunner On Revelation, Robert Bertram

Concordia Theological Monthly

Professor Emil Brunner, the Reformed theologian at the University of Zurich, probably requires little introduction. He, more than any others of the so-called neo-orthodox theologians from Europe, has fast found his way into American Protestant theological thinking. his books seem to be showing up more and more frequently even in Lutheran parsonages, and his name has appeared a number of times in past issues of this very journal. This wide respect which Brunner enjoys is not undeserved. He has been considerably instrumental in encouraging Protestant theologians to return to the rock whence they were hewn, to the classical Christian doctrines …

A Critical Study Of The Evidence Pertaining To Certain Disputed Sites In Palestine, Erich Kiehl Jun 1951

A Critical Study Of The Evidence Pertaining To Certain Disputed Sites In Palestine, Erich Kiehl

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the following chapters, we will draw on the observations and findings of these four periods to help to determine the validity or doubtfulness of the various identifications of the sites in question: Bethsaida, Mount of Beattitudes, Cana, Bethany beyond the Jordan, Emmaus, and the Calvary-Tomb area. Special reference will be made to the traditions, on which archaeologists later draw for information. We shall see that, however important traditions may be, it is dangerous to over-emphasize their importance. The occasion will present itself to cite a number of instances of this fact.

New Testament Fellowship: A Study In Semantics, R. T. Du Brau May 1951

New Testament Fellowship: A Study In Semantics, R. T. Du Brau

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the seventeen passages of the New Testament which employ χοινωνία the associative idea is uppermost. One readily distinguishes three chief usages of the term: 1) a common sharing in all spiritual-and sometimes material-gifts; logically followed by 2) mutual help and assistance by association in contributory aid, all of which affects, and is effected by, 3) the existing intimate fellowship in the association as a divinely created and established communion of all believers in Christ.

The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker Jan 1951

The Pessimism Of Ecclesiasties, Frederick W. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

Much of the literature published on Ecclesiastes in recent years stresses the pessimistic tone of the book. It is felt that the author's philosophy of life is permeated with a sense of futility and hopelessness in the face of historical events and the experiences of individuals. The purpose of this essay is to challenge the validity of such an interpretation and establish the proposition that Ecclesiastes is indeed pessimistic, but more profoundly so than is generally indicated. An analysis of his own statements indicates that his entire approach is based on a consideration of man's total depravity. God, however, aims …

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery Jan 1951

An Objective Study Of Ii Peter, Maurice E. Beery

Graduate Thesis Collection

II Peter has been a very controversial epistle. To use the term, 'has been', takes us as far back as the second century, for the early church fathers were sceptical of its value and authenticity and some have claimed that it came near not being part of the New Testament canon.

You will note that this study is not a commentary but rather an introduction to the problems that have arisen concerning this epistle.

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr Jan 1951

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every foreign missionary is confronted with one basic task. Without its successful accomplishment his work as a missionary will fail. It is the task of learning the language of the people among whom he is working. However laudable his motives may be, however great his consecration, and however capable he may be in many tasks, if he fails to gain the ability to understand readily speech addressed to him or to communicate his own thoughts intelligibly and accurately to them, he is working behind a closed door — a door which he failed to unlock,

It is the purpose of …

Sermon Study On Amos 8:11-12 For Sexagesima, Walter R. Roehrs

The words of Amos, and this text in particular, may not attract the Gospel preacher as a basis for his pulpit message. The Law and the curses of the Law are all that this text seems to contain. Why preach from Sinai when our message comes from Calvary?

Religious Beliefs And Practices At Irelya, New Guinea, As Reported By Natives, Willard Bruce Nov 1950

Religious Beliefs And Practices At Irelya, New Guinea, As Reported By Natives, Willard Bruce

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the world's islands New Guinea is second in size only to Greenland. With 312,000 square miles, it is roughly equal to the combined areas of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. In two features of its physical geography it is unique. No other of the larger islands has such a great proportion of mountainous country; and no area of like size anywhere else in the world has such high rainfalls. No one knows how many people inhabit New Guinea, but the Australian Commonwealth Office of Education estimates that in the eastern half alone there are at least 1,050,000 …
