The Apostolate: Its Enduring Significance In The Apostolic Word, Martin H. Franzmann Mar 1957

The Apostolate: Its Enduring Significance In The Apostolic Word, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our Lutheran Confessions state: "We believe, reach, and confess that the sole rule and standard according to which all dogmas together with all teachers should be estimated and judged are the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures of the Old and of the New Testament alone." In using the word "apostolic," they are confessing to something which is not merely a historical but also a theological entity. For the conception "apostle" and "apostolic" is one which is determined entirely by its relationship to the Lord, who establishes the apostolate and sends the apostles.

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke Jun 1956

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the average pastor has available no one qualified to assist him in this task, he must do most of it himself. Aside from the task of reading and evaluating printed materials, the pastor must find some way of storing these materials and organizing them so as to have available the materials he needs, when he needs them. Dr. Elgin S. Moyer, librarian at Moody Bible Institute, reports a comment from one of his professors, “There are two ways of securing the information we need; one, having it in our memory, and the other, knowing where to find what we …

The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel According To St. John, John D. Senter Jun 1956

The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel According To St. John, John D. Senter

Bachelor of Divinity

It is well known that the Christian religion offers an answer to the age-old question, “What is truth?" Perhaps it is not so well known that the answer which it gives does not have to be verbalized in such a way that "truth seems to be nothing more than an organized assemblage of highly abstract “concepts.” St. John managed to speak of the ultimate Truth of which Christianity speaks in such a manner that it is seen to be, as in fact it is, concrete, historical, and even personal, when he identified Truth with Jesus. Thus he also showed that …

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It might be well to emphasize the fact that this is an exegetical study of sanctification; therefore sanctification as defined in this paper may or may not always agree with the other uses of sanctification in different theological disciplines.

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis May 1956

A Study Of The Usages And Meanings Of The Word "Heart" In The Old Testament, John Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly all Old Testament theological works include large sections on the nature of men. While these works discuss meanings and usages of such important terms as "body," "soul," and "spirit," they devote very little space to the term "heart." This neglect leaves the impression that the Old Testament has only a passing interest in the part of man's nature which is revealed under the term "heart." Lexical and critical studies also minimize the importance of the term "heart." Franz Delitzsch has the most notable works in the theological field of the Old Testament on the study of the "heart." The …

The Rsv And The Small Catechism, George V. Schick Mar 1956

The Rsv And The Small Catechism, George V. Schick

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the theological literature of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod it has been the practice to quote Scripture passages in English in the form in which they appear in the King James Version of 1611. The revision of 1881-1885 and the revision of 1901 in no way affected this custom. Neither achieved any great measure of popularity. The situation appears to be somewhat different in the case of the Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version, which appeared upon the market in 1952 under copyright of the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United …

Lntertestamental Studies 1946-1955, Raymond F. Surburg Feb 1956

Lntertestamental Studies 1946-1955, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Modern Biblical studies stress the importance of an acquaintance with the era between the Testaments as a necessary aid in understanding the New Testament. It is the time span from the Medo-Persian to the Roman period. Between these two epochs is the Grecian period. During these four centuries the seat of world empire moved from the East to the West, from Asia to Europe. These years witnessed the rise of cities with Greek names in Palestine and gave us the translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek. It was in the Grecian period that the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes arose …

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg Jul 1955

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The pastor, the missionary, the parochial school teacher, the Sunday school and weekday school teachers, the Christian youth leaders, and others use the Bible in their respective fields of labor in the Lord's vineyard. If these Christian workers and leaders are to fulfill the intention of the divinely appointed ministry of reconciliation and accomplish the perfecting of the saints through the Word of Truth, a correct and adequate understanding of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, together with their proper application, is essential. The explanation and the application of the Word of God must rest upon a sound and self …

The Linguistic Problem Of The Pastoral Epistles, Norman C. Meyer Jun 1955

The Linguistic Problem Of The Pastoral Epistles, Norman C. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

We will restrict our study to the third of these problems: THE LINGUISTIC PROBLEM OF THE PASTORAL EPISTLES. This is the problem around which critics of our day are chiefly building their critical studies. Liberal and conservative scholars alike are most deeply impressed with this one phase of study.

Our purpose, therefore, is to make a study of this linguistic problem confronted in our Epistles and to state the conclusions of various scholars derived from their research into this single problem.

The Witness Of God With Special Reference To Hebrews 11:2, Paul Schuessler
