The Superman, C W. Faye Oct 1930

The Superman, C W. Faye

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is a revision, amplification, and bringing up to date of an oration delivered and published a number of years ago. I should like to add that I have sometimes felt in preparing this paper that what Bergson, for instance, has been driving at has eluded me. I have tried to present fairly and justly the doctrines of the thinkers mentioned in this paper. Even If I have failed to discover what they wished to teach, I feel pretty confident of having found out what the bulk of their followers think they teach. For practical purposes that is sufficient; for …

"Professing Themselves To Be Wise, They Became Fools." Rom. 1, 22, George Luecke Sep 1930

"Professing Themselves To Be Wise, They Became Fools." Rom. 1, 22, George Luecke

Concordia Theological Monthly

The writer has been very forcefully reminded of this word of St. Paul by two articles which have recently appeared in two prominent and widely read journals, one in the Atlantic Monthly for January, the other in the Literary Digest of January 25. The former of the two articles is entitled "The Antireligious Front,” by William L Sullivan, and its purpose is to ridicule the antireligious vagaries of ungodly men who are "wise in their own conceit.” Two sections of this article particularly appeal to me, and will, I think, appeal to others, as masterly presentations of the folly of …

The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham Jul 1930

The Place Of Catechetical Instruction In Catholic Education, Anne H. Graham

Bachelors’ Theses

Catechetical instruction in the Church dates from St. Paul, and is mentioned in his Epistles. Requirements for admission into the primitive Church were exacting and thorough. The writings of the Fathers, the ancient liturgies, and the decrees of the first Councils tell us that before their Baptism, the catechumens were obliged to learn by heart the Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed, and had to be instructed in these formulas. In addition, special instruction was also given them regarding the Commandments and the Sacraments they were about to receive - Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar May 1930

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection According To The New Testament, Gustav Gehlhar

Bachelor of Divinity

The doctrine of the resurrection of the body is a teaching peculiar to the Christian religion. We need only to investigate the world's religious history in order to be convinced that all other religions know nothing about such a resurrection.

The Counter-Reformation, Elizabeth Dolores Egan May 1930

The Counter-Reformation, Elizabeth Dolores Egan

Bachelors’ Theses

There have been but few periods in the history of the Western church in which its administration and the lives of the clergy have been completely exempt from censure. Abuses occurred in the middle ages which required the constant effort of reformers to counter-act. In the eleventh century the church was confronted with the contest about Lay-investiture. This was an abuse which grew out of the feudal system. In addition to investing nobles with feudal property it became the custom to invest the clergy, especially bishops and archbishops, with fiefs...

Concerning The Resurrection Body, J T. Mueller Apr 1930

Concerning The Resurrection Body, J T. Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

Modern unbelief, in its onslaught on our Christian faith, is in violent opposition also to the Biblical doctrine of the resurrection, one of the central teachings of the Gospel. With regard to this doctrine, Modernists are divided into two camps. Some, like Fosdick, are inclined to identify the resurrection of the body with the "immortality of the soul.'' (Op. Fosdick, Modern Use of the Bible.) Others, again, deny even the doctrine of personal immortality, claiming that "the only valid immortality is of two kinds, influential and eugenic,'' or, that "the prolonged and rich life of posterity here is the only …

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch Apr 1930

Preaching On The Augsburg Confession, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching on the Augsburg Confession. The four-hundredth anniversary of Luther's Small Catechism, celebrated wherever the name of Luther was known, has undoubtedly been a source of richest blessing. Pastors and people become better acquainted with its history and contents, learned to appreciate this little book the more highly, and thanked God the more sincerely for this precious gift. The sermons preached on the Catechism during 1920 were not in vain, but productive of splendid results, sure as Is.55, 10. 11 still holds good. Let us hope that similar streams of blessing will flow from the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary· …

Christian Spirit In Horace's Odes, Gertrude E. Stangler Apr 1930

Christian Spirit In Horace's Odes, Gertrude E. Stangler

Bachelors’ Theses

To point out the Christian spirit in Horace’s odes seems an almost impracticable, impossible problem upon first thought, For how can a person possess the spirit of a religion or system of philosophy of which there is no knowledge, in fact, whose very existence has not yet become a reality? Therein lies the problem! For, Horace was, as we know, a pagan--perhaps one of the most pagan writers of the ages and yet we say he possessed a Christian spirit. And so he did. But, is it necessary to adopt a certain religion or certain forms of worship in order …

Holiness And The Greek Tongue, Newton Wray Jan 1930

Holiness And The Greek Tongue, Newton Wray

Books by Taylor faculty, staff, and administrators

The advent of Jesus Christ occurred at a date described as "the fulness of time," signifying not only an hour for the fulfillment of prophecy but also that providential preparation which predisposed to the reception of Christianity and facilitated its spread among men.

The factors in this preparation may be included under four general heads:

1. The moral state of the world.
2. The Roman Empire.
3. The Greek language.
4. The location of Jewish Synagogues everywhere.

The Cat Who Went To Heaven, Elizabeth Coatsworth, Lynd Ward Jan 1930

The Cat Who Went To Heaven, Elizabeth Coatsworth, Lynd Ward

Zea E-Books in American Studies

Winner of the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1931, this novel is the story of a struggling Japanese artist and his housekeeper who adopt a three-colored cat and how that affects their lives and fortunes. Commissioned to make a painting of the death of Buddha to be hung in the village temple, the artist imagines the various animals whose forms had been taken in the Buddha’s past lives and the generous deeds they had done, as the cat—auspiciously named “Good Fortune”—looks on with hopes to be included. Could a cat, from a species usually so proud …
