Bossuet: The Funeral Orations, Frank J. Antoine Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis, Bossuet will be studied by means of that work of his which is perhaps the best remembered: The Funeral Orations. All other of his writings, as far as is possible, will be excluded from consideration. In these orations his character and philosophy can be seen, as well as his place in this world.

Bossuet's Funeral Orations are well known for their truly Classical style. They are the best examples of French classical oratory. The influence which assisted in forming this well known style will be considered, as well as the influence of Bossuet's oratory in France.

A Translation Of St. Augustine's Dissertation On The Happy Life, Max L. Adamski May 1932

A Translation Of St. Augustine's Dissertation On The Happy Life, Max L. Adamski

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the tendency of the present generation to be constantly striving for happiness and it would profit many to study the views of one, who for more than thirty years was striving in vain to find a perfectly satisfying happiness. The views of Augustine on a happy life after his conversion should be carefully analyzed by all who desire to reach their ultimate end in life -- the possession of God. In submitting a translation of this work of the Father of the est it has been the author's purpose to present the views of this interesting character on …

Christian Missions In China Before Morrison, Walter G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

Less than a half century after Augustine of Canterbury began his work of Christianizing the Anglo-Saxons in England; nearly a half century before Boniface, the so-called Apostle of the Germans, was born; fully two hundred years before Ansgar, the Apostle of the North, began his work of founding the Christian Church among the Northmen; and long before Christianity had came to the Moravians, Bulgarians, Bohemians, Hungarians, Pomeranians, Prussians, Poles, Russians, and other people that make up the Western Christian world to-day, Christianity was brought to China, that far-fung land with its teeming millions of inhabitants, which in spite of all …

“I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness.'' The loving Husband, His heart filled with love divine, leads His apostate wife into the wilderness. The selfsame God that punished her, vv. 8-13, is the God of love, who has loved her with an everlasting love. When she stands stripped of all her beauty and all her wealth, v. 3, destitute, despised, forsaken by her lovers, a miserable woman, not daring to raise her eyes for shame, then I will "speak comfortably unto her," speak to her heart, so heavy, so sad.

Wisconsin

The Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions (BCIM) was created in 1874 as the Office of the Commissioner for Catholic Indian Missions to protect, promote, and administer the Native American mission interests of the Catholic Church in the United States. Records in this group are organized by record group and then state or territory and year. Collection organization varies very little throughout the collection, however, prior to 1921, general correspondence was organized by location. Starting with Director Hughes, general correspondence was placed as its own subgroup within the collection and is organized alphabetically. Please go to Ask An Archivist if you …

Has Our Church A Quarrel With Science?, P E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

He who makes clear distinctions teaches well. So says the old Latin proverb. Or: He whose definitions are clear at the outset, will most likely succeed in presenting his subject in a convincing manner. Let us therefore begin with some definitions, in keeping with the wording of our topic.

Marriage And Divorce, Severin J. Wiza Jul 1931

Marriage And Divorce, Severin J. Wiza

Bachelors’ Theses

Marriage and divorce have of late received a great deal of attention throughout the world. The recent Encyclical Letter of Hie Holiness Pope Pius XI, on Christian Marriage, has occasioned comment and considerable thought. Anyone desiring a full treatment of marriage and divorce should consult the Encyclical on Marriage. But yet I would be glad to have the reader attend to the thought that the reading of the Encyclical has stimulated in me. Perhaps a reading of this thesis will result in a strong desire on the readers part to write a thesis on this subject which will excel my …

Education, Psychology, And Religion As Factors In Creating Happiness Among The Deaf, O C. Schroeder May 1931

Education, Psychology, And Religion As Factors In Creating Happiness Among The Deaf, O C. Schroeder

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the study of aids to happiness among the deaf is to portray spiritual blessings rather than to evaluate the benefits of education and material success. To a large extent this treatise is narrative and descriptive. Our interest, however is not in narration and description per se, but only as they portray the causes of, and the means to, the promotion of happiness among the deaf.

The Difficult Verses Of The Song Of Deborah Expounded, E A. Schack

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to give a translation of the entire Song and offer a tenable solution of the linguistic difficulties found therein, established on sound biblical exegesis, and not by corrupting the text, as critics have done and yet do; for that mititates against the clear conception or Holy Writ.

The Active Obedience Of Christ, Th Engelder Nov 1930

The Active Obedience Of Christ, Th Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The vicarious satisfaction rendered by Christ includes, besides His suffering and death, His fulfilment of the divine Law given to man in place of man (loco hominum). In other words, in order to satisfy the divine justice, Christ not only bore the penalty of man's disobedience of the Law, but also rendered in His holy life that obedience to the Law which man is obligated to render, but does not render (active obedience of Christ, obedientia. Christi activa). As our guilt and punishment was imputed to Christ, so also our obligation to keep God's Law , Gal. 8, 13; 4, …
