A Study Of Peter Dorfler And His Works, Mary Arnolda Neumann Jul 1933

A Study Of Peter Dorfler And His Works, Mary Arnolda Neumann

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of writing this thesis is to study the works of Peter Doerfler so as to get some knowledge of his contribution to present day literature. Another reason is to learn how Doerfler ranks in the minds of the leading literary critics and to ascertain what his possible role in Catholic literature in particular and German literature in general will be. A third reason is to point out the outstanding qualities of Doerfler's works.

Discipline In The Ancient Synagog And Matt. 18, G. Mahler Jun 1933

Discipline In The Ancient Synagog And Matt. 18, G. Mahler

Concordia Theological Monthly

By the ancient synagog is meant the synagogical institution as it constituted itself at the beginning of the New Testament era. It was then a well-established, flourishing institution, deeply rooted in the life of the nation. James could any of it: ''Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogs every Sabbath-day," Acts 15, 21.

An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen May 1933

An Historic Account Of Music Criticism And Music Critics In Utah, Basil Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in making a study of music criticism in Utah is to realize a reliable historical account of criticism as expressed by means of journals and the growth of music within the state. This study, it is granted, is not a complete history of music in Utah. It merely treats one phase of a yet unwritten history.

A secondary interest is to defend the assertion that Utah has had music criticism and not to eulogize or deride the music pioneers of the state. It may also impress the need of constructive criticism to insure the stimulus and incentive necessary …

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Apr 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

The brunt of the assault on the Old Testament is directed not so much against its language or its history as ultimately against its theology. While the Scriptures of the Old Covenant (Ex.17, 14; Deut. 31, 9; etc.) claim to be products of a direct and divine revelation and are thus acknowledged by our Lord Himself and by His apostles (2 Tim. 3, 16), it has become the avowed objective of criticism to remove any distinguishing criteria of the divine and to eliminate the conception of any direct and exclusive revelation on which Israel's religion is based.

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier Mar 1933

Archeology-The Nemesis, W. A. Maier

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second function of avenging archeology has been the tearing down of that amazing scaffold of theories on which a skeptical criticism has sought to reconstruct the Biblical narratives according to the blue-prints of its tendential theorization.

Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch Mar 1933

Malcious Desertion, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The seventh chapter of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians contains various instructions regarding marriage, all of which apparently were given in answer to questions proposed to the apostle by the congregation. After having discussed the question whether it were better to marry or to remain unmarried, the apostle turns his attention to such as have either before or after their conversion been married. He distinguishes two classes: such marriages in which both spouses are believers and such in which one spouse is a believer, the other an unbeliever. His instructions to believing couples, V. 12, we have already considered.

Studies In Eusebius, E. G. Sihler Jan 1933

Studies In Eusebius, E. G. Sihler

Concordia Theological Monthly

The slurs of Gibbon have been answered by many Christians, especially by Milman, Dean of St. Paul's. The chief aim of Gibbon was to belittle the motives and heroism of the martyrs, to call in question the accounts of witnesses like Lactantius and Eusebius, and to excuse or mitigate the action of those responsible for the persecutions. In the present paper my aim is to examine with care the procedure and methods of Eusebius.

The Religious Implications Of Hobhouse's Philosophy, H. Austin Smith Jan 1933

The Religious Implications Of Hobhouse's Philosophy, H. Austin Smith

Graduate Thesis Collection

The philosophy of L.T. Hobhouse interested me primarily because it is an attempt at a synthesis of the results of empirical science and of rational thought. The religious aspect of his work, both in his definite criticisms and contributions in the specific field of religion and in the more general implications of his system as a whole, seemed to me worth compiling and examining.

Is The New Science Hostile To Religon?, Theodore Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The question is raised in a letter which just comes to hand from Rev. H. J. S. Astrup of Zululand, South Africa, who calls himself "an unknown far-away man," but whose labors in the South Africa mission-field are not unknown to us. Rev. Astrup particularly refers to a recent book of Sir James Jeans, The Mysterious Universe, a book which in this reader's opinion "has upset many person's faith," particularly in its bearings on the Christian's belief in creation.

The Religion Of Ancient Egypt, E. G. Sihler Aug 1932

The Religion Of Ancient Egypt, E. G. Sihler

Concordia Theological Monthly

Paul generally summarizes the world of men about him as Jews and Greeks, the latter being more comprehensive to him than to us in our outlook upon the ancient world. Paul also often uses the Jewish term the nations, which the Authorized Version renders Gentiles (as Rom. 2, 14; I like Luther's Heiden better) and which comprehended all non-Jews. One fundamental observation must be made at the beginning of this essay.

The Meaning Of 1 Cor. 9, 9. 10, W. Arndt May 1932

The Meaning Of 1 Cor. 9, 9. 10, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

The above passage has caused Christian readers and interpreters not a little amount of difficulty, and errorists and unbelievers have used it as a basis for an attack on the inspired character of St. Paul's writings. It will then not be considered an unwarranted intrusion upon the time of our readers if we devote an article to the investigation of the meaning which must be assigned these words of the apostle.
