New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner Sep 1936

New Revisons Of Comparative Religion, Th. Graebner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The three stages of down-town metropolitan real estate: the brick store, the steel and concrete sky-scraper, the parking lot, fitly describe the history of the comparative study of religion. The foundation was laid in philology when Max Mueller together with many a less brilliant, but more profound student of language developed the imposing structure of the science of religion on the basis of etymological study. The structure was laid low less than fifty years later, and on its place was erected the colossal pile of the anthropological study of religion, based on the evolutionary theory. The reconstruction of Old Testament …

Frederick August Craemer, W. G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some time ago, in conversation with one of our retired ministers who had received his theological training under Craemer at Springfield, Craemer was referred to as the "forgotten man of the Missouri Synod." Of course, this is not true of those who know the man who served as the head of our Practical Seminary for over forty years. They have not forgotten him, especially not those who were trained for the ministry by "Onkel” Craemer. Their eyes light up when they think of him, and what they say of him is spoken in a tone of profound love and admiration. …

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht May 1936

An Investigation Of Molech And Recent Theories Concerning The Term, Herbert C. Albrecht

Bachelor of Divinity

The influence of mechanistic, materialistic science, through Evolutionism, has in recent centuries shaped men's theories regarding the origin and development of the religions of mankind. Since the universe was conceived to be the direct result of vast eras of development by a simple process of cause and effect, it had to follow that religion was also an outgrowth of the same lines of cause and effect. Deistic speculation, indeed, made God the primal cause of this development, insofar as he set the universe in motion, leaving it to evolve in its own way, but Deism thought of religion as being …

Bachelors’ Theses

In the modern trend to disparage the acts and truths of revealed religion, discerning Catholic Apologists find that so-called rationalist thinkers fail to focus the spotlight of reason on the religious question which otherwise causes them such great interest.

Bachelors’ Theses

In the modern trend to disparage the acts and truths of revealed religion, discerning Catholic Apologists find that so-called rationalist thinkers fail to focus the spotlight of reason on the religious question which otherwise causes them such great interest. The reason opponents of religion avoid conflict on these grounds is suggested by the following words of Arnold Lunn in the chronicle of his recent conversion.

Some Contacts Of The Book Of Acts With The Every-Day Life Of Its Age, H. A. Keinath

Concordia Theological Monthly

New Testament Christianity, first garbed in the swaddling-clothes of Semitism, soon exchanged its outward dress for the more practical robes of Hellenism. Jesus of Nazareth was active in a little speck of ground on the edge of the mighty Roman Empire; His language was Aramaic, His disciples were Jews, His contacts and the intellectual atmosphere of the men among whom He moved were chiefly Jewish. Yet within a few years after His resurrection Christianity had gone beyond the sphere of distinctly Jewish surroundings and had begun its mission of world conquest. This explosion immediately required an accommodation in the field …

Sermon Study On Phil. 1, 12-21, Theo. Laetsch Feb 1936

Sermon Study On Phil. 1, 12-21, Theo. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

The letter to the Philippians is addressed to a congregation to which the apostle was especially attached. Philippi had been the first city in Europe in which the apostle had magnified his Lord Jesus by preaching the Gospel, Acts 16, 12. 13; by establishing a congregation, vv. 14. 33-40; by suffering for the cause of the Gospel, vv. 19-24. In the dark, dreary dungeon of this city he and Silas at midnight burst forth in a song of praise for the content of which we may compare Acta 5, 41; 14, 27. To these Philippians the letter is addressed. Again …

Volume 06: 1935-36, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri)

De Andrein

A major achievement of the students of St. Mary’s of the Barrens was the regular publication of their student newspaper. Originally titled, The Andrean, it began as a typewritten, hand illustrated piece that appears to have been circulated among the student body from 1928 to 1930. In November 1930, the format and title changed to The DeAndrein. The printed newspaper included copies of photographs, and was offered for sale to alumni, family, and friends. This informative publication continued uninterrupted until 1965. Many issues of The DeAndrein (newsletter) from June 1940 to December 1963; various programs, goals, directions, etc.; many pamphlets …
