Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The most commonly used exposure assessment for heat stress is based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), and the limits are based on empirical relationships that demonstrate a sustainable exposure. The ISO 7933 (2017) describes Predicted Heat Strain (PHS), which is a rational model for heat stress assessment that is used to assess time-limited exposures. Investigators have examined PHS validity under a variety of time-limited conditions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate if PHS can predict sustainable exposures.
The data used for this study were from two previous heat stress studies using a progressive heat stress protocol. The …

A Mendelian Randomization Study Of Coronary Artery Disease And Three Amino Acids: Alanine, Glycine, And Glutamine, Allan Uribe
Dissertations and Theses
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) accounts for the majority of those deaths. Observational studies have identified risk factors that have been helpful in lowering the death rate, including hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity and poor diet. The effects of these risk factors on CAD remain unclear. To clarify the effect of three amino acids, alanine, glutamine, and glycine on CAD I applied a two sample Mendelian randomization analysis to extensively genotyped observational data. In a sample with up to 184,000 individuals and approximately 60,000 controls, SNPs that reached genome wide …
The Association Of Higher Carbon Dioxide Levels And Teachers’ Perceived Air Quality And Well Being In New York City Elementary Schools, Leon Levine
Dissertations and Theses
Introduction:
Several recent studies have investigated the direct effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) at concentrations typically found in office buildings on occupant cognitive functioning. These studies have reported a significant association between (impaired) decision making ability and exposure to increased levels of CO2 (600 ppm versus 1500 ppm). The findings have serious implications in a classroom setting since the objective of schools is to provide an optimal environment for learning. If CO2 levels in schools are elevated, the teachers’ health and the students’ learning environment will be compromised. Higher CO2 levels could impact teachers’ and …

Review Of Chagas Disease And Treatment Obstacles To Eradication, Emily Sherman
Senior Honors Theses
The World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control reports Chagas disease, or American trypanosomiasis, as a major neglected tropical disease prevalent in 21 endemic Latin American countries. The agent of the disease is a single-celled protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, and common modes of transmission include infected feces of a triatomine bug, crossing the placental barrier, and blood products. The two phases of infection are acute and chronic, and the three most affected body systems are cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous. Although research has led to several advances in the knowledge of CD, there are gaps in treatment and epidemiological …

Educational Reinforcements Of And Challenges To Gender Norms In Urban Sri Lanka, Ruvani Fonseka
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background:
In 2013, over half of surveyed Sri Lankan men and women expressed gender-inequitable attitudes equating masculinity with violence, and femininity with obedience to men. Gender-inequitable attitudes have been shown to be linked to gender-based violence (GBV) in multiple contexts.
The goal of this research was to identify points of intervention at which programmes and policies could cultivate gender-equitable attitudes among youth in Sri Lanka, with a goal of reducing GBV in adulthood.
Methods:
Over 9 months, the lead author interviewed 18 young adults (ages 18-30) in urban Sri Lanka to understand how their experiences influenced their gender identity, as …

Stigma is an established driver of population-level health outcomes. Antidiscrimination laws can generate or alleviate stigma and, thus, are a critical component in the study of improving population health.
Currently, antidiscrimination laws are often underenforced and are sometimes conceptualized by courts and lawmakers in ways that are too narrow to fully reach all forms of stigma and all individuals who are stigmatized.
To remedy these limitations, we propose the creation of a new population-level surveillance system of antidiscrimination law and its enforcement, a central body to enforce antidiscrimination laws, as well as a collaborative research initiative to enhance the study …

Interferon gamma has long been studied as a critical mediator of tumor immunity. In recent years, the complexity of cellular interactions that take place in the tumor microenvironment has become better appreciated in the context of immunotherapy. While checkpoint inhibitors have dramatically improved remission rates in cancer treatment, IFN-Γ and related effectors continue to be identified as strong predictors of treatment success. In this review, we provide an overview of the multiple immunosuppressive barriers that IFN-Γ has to overcome to eliminate tumors, and potential avenues for modulating the immune response in favor of tumor rejection.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections impact billions of people worldwide. The traditional STH control approach is a morbidity control strategy implementing mass drug administration (MDA) programs targeting school-aged children (SAC). In Brazil, this control strategy has decreased STH prevalence to less than 20% in most of the country and providing an opportunity to transition from the morbidity control program and towards a surveillance and response system geared towards STH elimination. Surveillance and response systems geared towards elimination require the implementation higher accuracy diagnostics to detect infection in low-transmission communities, surveillance of entire households, high-resolution modeling at the household-habitat scale, and targeted …

Computational Feasibility Of Simulating Whole-Organ Vascular Networks And Their Response To Injury, William Patrick Donahue
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Healthy vasculature is critical to sustaining the function of normal tissues in the human body. Radiation therapy for cancer causes injury of the vasculature of non-cancerous tissues. These changes have been associated with potentially deadly conditions such as necrosis of the brain tissue. There are currently no computational methods to study the effects of radiation vascular injury in whole-organ vasculatures because of the large number of vessels involved. The goal of this work was to test the feasibility of simulating radiation damage to whole-brain vascular networks and calculate the resulting change in blood flow. To accomplish this, we developed algorithms …

Epidemiology And Ideology: Why Health Equity Is Problematic In The United States, Cynthia R. Hall
Florida Public Health Review
Health and healthcare are central elements to the achievement of social justice. Braveman and Gruskin are proponents of health equity as a means to realize social justice. They define health equity as the “absence of systemic barriers to health” that are derived from the unequal power, influence, and capital of marginalized groups within societies (2003, p. 254). John Rawls and Norman Daniels have theorized that social justice requires a fair distribution of goods in a society and that good health is of moral importance to this effort, respectively. Thus, having fair access to a healthy life is a crucial element …

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the USA. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a clinically aggressive subtype of breast cancer with high rates of metastasis, tumor recurrence, and resistance to therapeutics. Obesity, defined by a high body mass index (BMI), is an established risk factor for breast cancer. Women with a high BMI have increased incidence and mortality of breast cancer; however, the mechanisms(s) by which obesity promotes tumor progression are not well understood. METHODS: In this study, obesity-altered adipose stem cells (obASCs) were used to evaluate obesity-mediated effects of TNBC. Both in vitro …
