Mosquitoes As Vectors Of Disease In Minnesota, John W. Washburn

Diseases due to mosquito-borne viruses occur every summer in Minnesota. The incidence of Western encephalitis and LaCrosse encephalitis is usually low, but outbreaks of Western encephalitis have occurred in the past. Evidence of Jamestown Canyon virus activity has been found in Minnesota. This virus may represent a newly-recognized cause of central nervous system disease and encephalitis. The epidemiology of the mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses found in Minnesota and the methods of disease surveillance and control are discussed.

Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros

Antimalarial activities ofchloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence ofmembranefiltration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID₅₀ values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss ofactivity byfiltration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtration. Water solutions filtered through Millex-GSfilter units consistently showed an absorbance maximum at 277 nm, accompanied by a lesser peak at 225 nm. Water filtrates from Nucleopore and Millex-G Vfilters showed no absorbance at 277 nm and only slight absorbance was evidentfor the Gelmanfilter unit. The Minnesota Mosquito Research Program (MMRP) was established in September 1984 in response to a request by Governor Perpich. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), as the lead agency, brought together a Working Group of distinguished North American experts to discuss the problems related to mosquito research and control. This Working Group- with advice from legislators and representatives from the community, environmental groups, and state and federal agencies- made recommendations for the development of a mosquito research and control program in Minnesota.

The Working Group divided its recommendations into two areas, research and administrative structure. An extensive research program in …

Treatment Of Paget's Bone Disease With The Bisphosphonate Apd, Carlos A. Mautalen

Thirty-two patients with Paget's bone disease have been treated with the bisphosphonate APD. Nineteen had previously received treatment for Paget's disease with EHDP alone or in combination with calcitonin; 13 had not previously received treatment for Paget's disease. APD was given in a mean dose of 6.8 mg/kg of body weight during a period of 6 to 12 months. Bone pain disappeared or diminished in 91% of the patients. A very significant diminution of the biochemical indices of bone turnover was observed in all patients, but the response occurred faster in patients who had not previously received treatment for Paget's …

The major factors responsible for the anemia of chronic renal failure are decreased erythropoietin (Ep) production, the presence of inhibitors of erythropoiesis, blood loss, and hemolysis. Ep, which is produced in the kidney, probably exerts its effect on the colony-forming units of the erythrocyte. Ep levels fall with worsening renal function (creatinine clearances in the range of 2-40 ml/min). but they rise to their highest levels in the immediate predialysis period, probably due to severe ischemia of both renal and extrarenal production sites. When patients are begun on hemodialysis, Ep levels fall, and the hematocrit rises. Erythropoietin therapy in the …

Thirty diabetic patients new to insulin were entered in an open label prospective study of biosynthetic human insulin (BHI). All patients experienced symptomatic control of diabetes attributable to dietary and BHI insulin therapy. Detailed six-month evaluation data were reviewed in 19 patients. A significant drop in fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin was noted at two months, and a further modest decrease occurred at six months. E. coli polypeptide antibodies were unchanged from baseline at six months, indicating that no bacterial protein contamination of BHI occurred. Longitudinal Pantothenic Acid Status Of Pregnant And Lactating Women, Won Oack Song

Pantothenic acid nutritional status was evaluated in a cohort of twenty-nine Caucasian pregnant women, aged 20-35, during their third trimester of pregnancy, at two-weeks postpartum and at three months postpartum. Seventeen non-pregnant, non-lactating women who had similar demographic backgrounds as the pregnant women were selected as a control group and followed the same experimental schedule as the pregnant women. A fasting blood sample, two days 24-h urine specimens and diet record were obtained for each of two days from each subject at each period.

The regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) is a complex reaction of mammalian tissues to diverse noxious stimuli. The phenomenon occurs regionally in the anatomical sense, involves both soft and hard tissues, and is characterized by an acceleration and domination of most ongoing normal vital tissue processes. It may represent an "SOS" mechanism which evolved to potentiate tissue healing and local tissue defensive reactions. When a RAP is obtunded, retarded healing and lowered resistance to infection and mechanical abuse may ensue. Otitis media continues to be a common and disabling problem which has become, in recent years, a fertile area for research. Based on studies in animals and humans, otitis media is classified into four groups: acute purulent otitis media (POM), serous otitis media (SOM), and mucoid or secretory otitis media (MOM). Together, these are referred to as otitis media with effusion (OME). The types can overlap and evolve into another type to become chronic otitis media and mastoiditis, characterized by the presence of granulation tissue or cholesteatoma. To identify risk factors for the occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in homosexual men, we conducted a case-control study in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Fifty patients (cases) (39 with Kaposi's sarcoma, 8 with pneumocystis pneumonia, and 3 with both) and 120 matched homosexual male controls (from sexually transmitted disease clinics and private medical practices) participated in the study. The variable most strongly associated with illness was a larger number of male sex partners per year (median, 61 for patients; 27 and 25 for clinic and private practice controls, respectively).
