Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) is a rare hereditary disease transmitted in families as an autosomal dominant trad. We have identified a family in which the expression of a rare autosomal dominant form of cutaneous lichen amyloidosis appears to cosegregate with MEN 2A. In this family the skin lesion presented as multiple infiltrated papules overlying well demarcated plaques over the scapular area (right or left). Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated amyloid which stained for keratin but not calcitonin. A total of 19 members were screened. Diagnostic And Therapeutic Potential Of New Radiopharmaceutical Agents In Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, Luigi Troncone, Vittoria Rufini, Giovina De Rosa, Amerigo Testa

Recently developed radiopharmaceuticals have been proposed for imaging medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with some having therapeutic potential. This study compares the imaging results obtained with radioiodinated meta-iodo-benzylguanidine (MIBG), 99mTc (V) DMSA, and 131I F(ab')2 anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (anti-CEA) in a group of MTC patients. In 23 patients 131I MIBG imaging showed a high specificity (no false-positive results) but a less satisfactory sensitivity (50%). In 12 patients 99mTc (V) DMSA revealed a better sensitivity (77%) but a lower specificity (three false-positive results). Immunoreactive calcitonin (ICT) can be ectopically secreted by lung cancer cells and has been proposed as a tumor marker for bronchial neoplasms. Since PDN-21 (katacalcin or the carboxyl-terminal flanking peptide of the calcitonin gene) and CT are cosecreted in normal subjects and in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), we sought to determine the potential utility of PDN-21 as a tumor marker for lung cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine the content of family life education curricula in Virginia's public schools and determine its appropriateness for the mentally handicapped students. It was the intent of this study to determine if existing curricula were designed to address the needs of mentally handicapped students according to a standard curricula designed by the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States. The 15 participants of this study were selected from a random sample of 69. The response rate was 20.2%.

Two patients with toxic shock-like syndrome are presented. Both patients had necrotizing cellulitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes, and both patients required extensive surgical debridement. The association of Streptococcus pyogenes infection and toxic shock-like syndrome is discussed.

Several possible mechanisms for the initiation and progression of tumors in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) merit consideration. Localization of MEN2A to the pericentromeric area of chromosome 10 indicates the site of the initial mutagenic event but does not explain the tissue specificity observed. The consistency of tissue involvement within families, despite the variability between families, suggests that the tumors result from separate but contiguous tissue-specific genes arranged in a particular linear order. Linkage studies in MEN 2A and 2B families are compatible with this contiguous gene theory. Data suggest that Knudson's two-mutational-event theory is applicable in MEN2, …

Religious beliefs and behaviors are multidimensional and they profoundly determine the ways we respond to health and illness, suffering and death. Researchers have designed numerous scales to measure different dimensions of religious commitment, beliefs and behaviors. A thorough review of the literature has shown general relationships between religion and health, but no researcher has developed an instrument measuring dimensions of religious commitment specifically relevant to health behaviors.

Concerns have been expressed for the ability of some vegetarian diets to support normal growth of children. Animal protein or meat intake showed a positive relationship to attained height in children from developing countries. In this study, the relationship between meat intake/vegetarian status and physical growth was investigated in children living in California.

Height and weight were collected on 2,272 Caucasian children aged 6-18 years attending Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) or public schools who participated in a two year longitudinal study. Many mental health professionals argue that these decisions have been based on prejudice and homophobia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate research on the sexual orientation of children raised by homosexual parents and review data on the mental/psychosexual health of these children. The purpose of this study was to examine printed educational materials on five specific genetic disabilities and evaluate them for appropriateness of reading level and for inclusion of several specific issues related to the adequacy of the literature. Publicly available literature was analyzed using the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula and content analysis to estimate readability and to test for the presence of a definition of the disorder, a description of the basic genetics of the disorder and its symptomology, references to support groups and references for further information.

Early diagnosis and accurate, biologically meaningful classification of prostate neoplasia remain important goals. The relation of evolving clinicopathologic concepts of histologic appearances to potential tumor progression is a major advance in classification of prostatic neoplasia. The criteria for recognizing incidental or "occult" stage A-l adenocarcinomas remain problematic in diagnosis, and focal neoplasms with little or no propensity to progression must be differentiated from cancers with a high likelihood of aggressive behavior. Current histologic grading systems in classifying prostate adenocarcinoma accurately identify two cancer subsets: 1) focal well differentiated tumors which rarely progress, and 2) diffuse poorly differentiated tumors which invariably …

Urothelial neoplasia is a unique cancer in that it consists of a spectrum of tumors with different biologic behaviors. The most common urothelial neoplasm is the low grade superficial papillary carcinoma or papilloma which may recur numerous times but does not result in significant morbidity or mortality. A variant of the superficial papillary carcinoma, which represents approximately 10% of the tumors, is the noninvasive papillary neoplasm which progresses to a less differentiated invasive transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). To assess the effect of cyclosporine therapy on the rate of renal function recovery after renal transplantation, patients with no clinical evidence of rejection and who were treated with either cyclosporine or azathioprine in addition to steroid therapy were studied (n = 74). Of the patients with immediate renal function (n = 57), those receiving organs from living, related donors had a faster recovery rate of glomerular filtration than patients with cadaveric grafts (azathioprine, 15 ± 2 versus 7 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.0001; cyclosporine, 14 ± 3 versus 6 ± 1 mL/min/day, P = 0.001). The South Texas area, Region 3 of the Southwestern Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is synthesized from archeological and bioarcheological perspectives. Three distinct geographic units within Region 3 are treated in detail: Central Texas Plateau Prairie, South Texas Plains, and Lower Pecos Canyonlands. More than 11,000 years of human adaptation are chronicled for this area, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Rio Grande along the border with northeastern Mexico. In 1987, 93 Escherichia coli 0157:H7 isolates were collected during routine surveillance for this pathogen in the state of Washington. Toxin genotypes and plasmid profiles were correlated with the clinical sequelae of illness in 88 of the 93 patients from whom these strains were isolated. Thirteen plasmid patterns were observed among the 88 tested isolates; four patterns accounted for 82(7o of the isolates. Genetic probing for Shiga-like toxins (SLT) I and II demonstrated the presence of both genes in 67 (76%), SLT I alone in three (3%), and SLT II alone in 18 (20%). Thousands of businesses in the United States have implemented programs to promote physical fitness among their employees (Falkenberg, 1987). The programs range from company-paid memberships at private health and fitness clubs to complete work site fitness facilities. These programs have been developed not only to improve and maintain employee health but also to promote psychological well-being and productivity and to reduce absenteeism, insurance claims, and stress. Recent research focusing on the use of employee fitness programs to improve work-related behaviors suggests that these programs may improve absenteeism, job satisfaction, tenure. and health care costs, especially among female employees (Baun, Bernacki, …

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité gives information about a postnatal family planning program in the Sfax Center of the Tunisia Maternity and Newborns Hospital. This program, developed jointly by the national family planning program and the Maternity staff, has had extraordinary success in getting more mothers to return after six weeks for their postnatal visit. During the visit, the period between births is discussed; and family planning services are offered as an important means for achieving both the recovery and good health of the mother, as well as the physical and mental development of the infant. The skeletal remains of an adult male associated with desiccated tissue and a coprolite were recovered from an apen-air midden deposit at the NAN Ranch Ruin (LA15049)) a large Mimbres site in Grant County) New Mexico. The find dates to about A.C. 1000-1100. Identifiable macroscopic elements in the caprolite consist offi nely fragmented corn and tiny seed fragments of an unknown plant. High amounts of willow (Salix) and mustard (Brassicaceae) pollen may indicate the ingestion of medicinal plants to combat a deteriorating health condition. The individual was approximately 35 -40 years old at the time of death and suffered from …
