Between August 1988 and January 1989 I visited niQe countries in the Western Pacific, North America and Europe to survey women's health promotion from the perspective of the women's health movement. The experience was facilitated by study leave (Professional Experience Programme) from the Western Australian College of Advanced Education (now Edith Cowan University).

The main purpose of the study was to exchange ideas with selected academics and experts in women's health. The information acquired will be applied in courses in women's health offered by Edith Cowan University and in the ongoing development of a series of videotape productions on women's …

Effects Of Age, Neuropsychological Impairment, And Medication On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Schizophrenia And Major Affective Disorder, Perry C. Goldstein, Gregory G. Brown, Andrew Marcus, James R. Ewing

Reports of abnormalities of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with schizophrenia and major affective disorder are contradictory. To gain a better understanding of the possible sources of these contradictions, the rCBF and neuropsychological functioning of 15 schizophrenics, 15 patients with major affective disorder, and 15 age-matched controls were studied. No group differences in overall rCBF, percent frontal devialion in flow, or rCBF asymmetries were observed. Both overall rCBF and percent frontal deviation of rCBF were reduced with greater age and with increasing neuropsychological impairment. Recent research suggests that the most potent feature of the Type A behavior pattern for prospectively predicting cardiac disease is aggravation, irritation, anger, and impatience (AIAI). The present study examines psychometric properties of a new AIAI measure and its relationship to the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects included 61 males undergoing coronary angiography. Comparisons were made of mean psychometric scores across groupings, defined by number of vessels occluded. These comparisons showed that the normal or subclinically occluded coronary angiographic group had high levels of depression and anxiety. The relations of systolic and diastolic blood pressures to alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in 15,612 men and 3,855 women were investigated. Alcohol intake was assessed by questionnaire and stratified into seven levels for men and six for women according to the ounces of ethanol consumed per week. Exercise tolerance was determined by maximal treadmill exercise testing and was categorized into six age-specific by sex-specific levels. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly related to both alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in both men and women. Quantitative Respirator Fit Testing: Probed Facepiece Versus Probed Cartridge, Sonya Melissa Seward

This study was performed to determine if there is a quantifiable difference between quantitative fit testing using a probed facepiece and a probed cartridge. Four subjects were tested on four different respirators. The respirators used were MSA & 3M full and half face respirator. Each subject performed each method five times per respirator. The results indicated no correlation between the two fit testing methods overall. However, a moderate correlation was found between the MSA respirators and the two methods. Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior

This study explores the feasibility of using an applied soil repellent finish, Scotchgard, on 100% cotton denim fabric in order to enhance the removal of atrazine and alachlor residue during the laundering process. The experimental findings provided no statistically significant evidence that Scotchgard fabric protector reduced pesticide residuals on the 100% cotton denim fabric either before or after laundering. A significant finding secondary to the study involved the possible interaction of Scotchgard with the pesticide alachlor, leaving greater amounts of residual on the fabric after laundering than those found with no fabric treatment. Actinomycotic infections, once common in humans and cattle, are now rare causes of disease in man. This general group of organisms belongs taxonomically between the true bacteria and the fungi; however, the organisms behave clinically like true anaerobes. The organism, although phagocytized by the host cells, is not killed. Therefore, d is defined as a facultative intracellular parasite of the host. The protean manifestations of actinomycotic infections often mimic infectious processes, such as osteomyelitis or granulomatous disease, as well as neoplasia. It is therefore important for the surgeon to include actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses in children …

The conventional estimation of motor, sensory, and mixed nerve conduction velocities reflects activity in the fastest conducting, heavily myelinated nerve fibers that are only a small proportion of the total. Unmyelinated and thinly myelinated fibers are not evaluated by this technique and numerically represent the largest group of fibers in human cutaneous nerves. The availability of new quantitative techniques to study this aspect of sensory function is an important addition to standard electrodiagnosis. Patient understanding and cooperation is essential because subjective responses are evaluated. We evaluated a reference range for 20 healthy subjects as well as variability on repeated testing. …

A total of 559 women with primary breast cancer treated by modified radical mastectomy were followed for a mean of 74.8 months to evaluate the relationship of sex hormone receptor content in the tumor with time to first recurrence and to death due to breast cancer. The prognostic significance of progesterone receptor (PgR) status was evaluated in terms of estrogen receptor (ER) status, age (< 49 years, > 50 years), extent of lymph node involvement, tumor size, and morphologic characteristics. Overall, patients with PgR positive (> 9 femtomoles/10 mg wet weight tissue) tumors experienced a significantly longer period to both first recurrence and …

The author's goal in this article, is not merely to propose public health strategies for the future, but also to examine why government has been so slow, so equivocal, in its public health response to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. He argues that there has been a fundamental ambivalence in perceptions of the epidemic. For some, AIDS is perceived as a disease, with sympathy for sufferers. Once AIDS is viewed as a disease, like other catastrophic diseases, it follows that public policy will be based upon science and epidemiology--health education, research and treatment.

Vision To reduce suffering and death from cancer using information collected by the Louisiana Tumor Registry. History Cancer registration in Louisiana began in 1947 at the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry in New Orleans. In 1974, as part of its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, the National Cancer Institute provided funds for a population-based cancer incidence and survival registry covering Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. The multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) gene has been mapped to the centromeric region of chromosome 10 by linkage analysis. We examined 36 medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs) (16 hereditary and 20 sporadic) and ten pheochromocytomas (eight hereditary and two sporadic) to detect loss of alleles on chromosome 10 using seven polymorphic DNA markers mapped to this chromosome. Of 20 informative cases, only one (5%) sporadic MTC showed loss of heterozygosity at the locus RBP3. Allele loss at the RBP3 locus was not found in pheochromocytomas from six heterozy gates. A parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) has been invoked as being responsible for the humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. Eight of the first 13 amino acids of PTHrP are identical with those in PTH, but there is no other significant homology. The PTHrP gene is located on chromosome 12, whereas that for PTH is on chromosome 11, and the two genes are probably related by a duplication process. Antisera against PTHrP(1-34), which cross-read poorly or not at all with PTH, and antisera against other parts of PTHrP not homologous to PTH were used in immunocytochemistry, using a peroxidase-antiperoxidase method, to identify PTHrP …

Recombinant DNA techniques have made it possible to establish the structure of various genes encoding polypeptide hormones. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of the calcitonin (CALC) genes in man has revealed surprising similarities and variations. These findings and the homologies among the sequences in different species offered an opportunity for speculation about relationships between these genes and about their evolutionary origin. The first gene (CALC-I) directing the synthesis of calcitonin (CT) or CT gene-related peptide (CGRP) comprises six exons and gives rise to two mRNAs by an alternative RNA-processing mechanism. The homology between CGRP and CT reflects their common origin. The …
