Accidental Poisoning In Young Children: Its Causes And Its Prevention, Charles H. Pierce, Harold N. Wright Jan 1965

Accidental Poisoning In Young Children: Its Causes And Its Prevention, Charles H. Pierce, Harold N. Wright

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Accidents, burns, drownings, and poisonings are the four most frequent causes of death among children. They far exceed the frequency of death from any of childhood's infectious diseases. With reasonable care, death from poisoning is probably the most amenable to prevention. Accidental poisoning, mainly in preschool children, is discussed from the standpoints of the major toxic hazards found around the usual home, their nature, incidence, location, and prevention.

Review Of Echinococcus Species In South Africa, Anna Johanna Maria Verster

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. The nominate subspecies of E. granulosus (Batsch, 1786) is redesignated from the type locality, Europe.

2. Five subspecies of E. granulosus are described from South African carnivores: E. g. granulosus, E. g. africanus, E. g. felidis, E. g. lycaontis and E. g. ortleppi.

3. E. g. granulosus has so far only been recovered from the Transvaal; E. g. ortleppi appears to be restricted to the Transvaal; E. g. africanus occurs in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal; E. g. lycaontis and E. g. felidis like their definitive hosts are restricted to the Transvaal.

A Study Of Door Pulls On Isolation Carts In A General Hospital For Evidence Of Contamination, Mary Alice Harper Jun 1964

A Study Of Door Pulls On Isolation Carts In A General Hospital For Evidence Of Contamination, Mary Alice Harper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of the study was to find out if isolation carts were serving as a means of cross infection. Literature pertaining to sources of possible contamination on hospital units written in the past five years were reviewed.

Using the descriptive survey as the method of study, effort was made to find out if isolation carts were a means of cross infection on the hospital unit. Two laboratory cultures were obtained from both door pulls on all isolation carts used by nursing units. This was done over a three month period from December 12, 1963 to March 11, 1964. The …

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes Jan 1963

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

Purification And Sanitary Control Of Water (Potable And Waste), Paul W. Kabler Jan 1962

Purification And Sanitary Control Of Water (Potable And Waste), Paul W. Kabler

United States Public Health Resources

Although most of the streams draining inhabited regions are contaminated with human or animal feces, water-borne disease today in the United States is relatively uncommon. Pathogenic enteric microorganisms probably do not multiply in raw water sources under normal conditions. They usually disappear in a relatively short time, with the rates depending on variations in environmental conditions. Urban water supplies have played a diminishing role in the transmission of intestinal disease because of improvements in the detection and enumeration of pollution indicators, water and sewage treatment processes, and t h e sanitary control of water systems.

An Investigation Into The Use Of Hormones And Antibiotics In Animal Feeds, The Control Problem And Public Health Significance, Patsy Price Jan 1958

An Investigation Into The Use Of Hormones And Antibiotics In Animal Feeds, The Control Problem And Public Health Significance, Patsy Price

Student Scholarship

This study investigates the development, regulation, and public health implications of incorporating hormones and antibiotics into animal feeds, a practice that became a major industrial development in the decade leading up to 1958. The research highlights how substances like diethylstilbestrol and various antibiotics were found to dramatically accelerate growth rates and improve feed efficiency in poultry, swine, and cattle. For instance, the use of diethylstilbestrol in fattening steers became widely accepted by 1954 following research showing significant daily weight gains and feed savings. Similarly, nutritional levels of antibiotics were found to enhance growth by checking subclinical infections and improving the …

On 18 May 1954, (a specimen of) Burhinus oedicnemus (L.) was killed in the Lenkoransky region of Azerbaijan S.S.R.; on its head a male Amblyomma lepidum Dönitz, 1909, was found. Morphological characters of this tick, size and shape of body, characteristic light and dark ornamentation of dorsal shield, punctation, shape, and two colors of festoons, size and shape of cervical and lateral grooves, hypostome, peritreme, projection on coxae, and spherical orbited eyes correspond to those in the description of A. lepidum, given in Robinson monograph.
