The Nutritive Value And Supplementation Of Ogi (Pap), The Major Nigerian Weaning Food, Elizabeth E. Gyaami Mar 1974

The Nutritive Value And Supplementation Of Ogi (Pap), The Major Nigerian Weaning Food, Elizabeth E. Gyaami

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritive value of ogi, which is the national weaning food in Nigeria, and to supplement it with indigenous foods that are easily produced in Nigeria, available in the local market, locally used, and within the economic capacity of the people. The protein content of corn and ogi was determined by the Kjeldahl method and the amino acid content was determined by ionexchange chromatography. The quality of the foods was evaluated by the rat growth method and the protein efficiency ratio (PER).

Ogi and com, from which ogi is made, contained essentially …

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi Dec 1973

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In a retrospective study, hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was found in 14 lots of human plasma pools (16-20 liters each) that had been treated by the combined Betaprone (BPL) with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation procedure. No evidence of clinical hepatitis was found during a six-month follow-up after 185.2 liters of HB Ag positive plasma were Infused into 257 patients. Since HB Ag positive blood products treated by BPL with UV produced no clinical hepatitis, it is evident that our treatment is efficacious against hepatitis virus agents.

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod Sep 1973

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …

Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig Jan 1973

Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Lice have been intimately associated with man for centuries. Infestations with lice occur today in the United States and many other countries despite great efforts to maintain high standards of public health. Public health agencies are often called upon if infestations include or expose large groups of people, particularly those in public institutions such as schools, jails, hospitals, or homes for the aged.

The three sucking lice that infest humans are: the body louse (Pedlculus humanus humanus), the head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), and the crab louse (Pthirus pubis). The body louse is the …

Rubella Immunization Of Adult Females Using Hpv-77 Dk-12 Live Attenuated Rubella Virus, Donald A. Romig, E. L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Robert G. Brackett

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study demonstrates the serologic response as measured by the HAl test and the side reactions of the HPV-77 DK-12 live rubella vaccine in a small group of adult females. One hundred percent seroconversion was obtained using this vaccine. The mean titers obtained in two separate time periods post-vaccination are higher than those reported for several other rubella virus vaccines. A 66% occurrence of joint symptomatology was recorded post-vaccination with a mean duration of 11.6 days; 24% of women who received placebo reported joint complaints which had a mean duration of 2.0 days. The difference between these two rates is …

Immunologic Status Of Uremic Patients, Gerald A. Logrippo, C. E. Rupe, Hajime Hayashi, Dean Lesher Jun 1970

Immunologic Status Of Uremic Patients, Gerald A. Logrippo, C. E. Rupe, Hajime Hayashi, Dean Lesher

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The immunologic status of 25 uremic patients was studied with a battery of tests evaluating the humoral and cytological aspects of immunity. The individual's humoral immune status was evaluated as follows: quantitation of the three major serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM) expressed in mg/100 ml of serum and compared to established normal clinical standards (±2 SD/mean); qualitation of IgG and IgM evaluated by specific virus antibody titers and antitoxin values associated with IgG and by isoagglutinin tilers of the ABO blood groups associated with IgM. Immunoglobulin status is grouped into hyper- and hypo-immunoglobulin variations from normal and correlated with …

Cephalexin: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, Frank Cox Jr., Edward L. Quinn, Bienvenido G. Gatmaitan, Nancy Peterson Jun 1970

Cephalexin: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, Frank Cox Jr., Edward L. Quinn, Bienvenido G. Gatmaitan, Nancy Peterson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cephalexin, a derivative of cephalosporin C, produces high serum and urine concentrations after oral administration. In addition, it shows good activity in vitro against most gram-positive and some gram-negative organisms. This study reports the in vitro susceptibility to cephalexin of a series of clinical isolates, the serum levels and urine concentrations in human volunteers and the results of its use in infections due to susceptible organisms. Results of in vitro susceptibility testing reveal that cephalexin was effective against most strains of the gram-positive organisms tested — group A streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci — although the MIC's are higher than those …

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Azathioprine (Imuran®) In The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis, William G. Tucker, K. H. Kapphahn Jun 1969

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Azathioprine (Imuran®) In The Treatment Of Multiple Sclerosis, William G. Tucker, K. H. Kapphahn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A theoretical approach to the unknown etiology of multiple sclerosis is presented in this preliminary study which reports the results of empiric treatment with azathioprine. Imuran® therapy produced stabilization of the disease, neurological improvement, and no progress of neurological dysfunction or loss of any regained function. Evidence points toward a viral-induced immunological defect. Abnormal gamma globulins found in the cerebral spinal fluid suggest an immunological etiology.

Simple Methods For Detection Of Bacteriuria In The Physician's Office, E. G. Heinze Jr., A. Hodari, T. Connolly, D. Jones, F. Cox, E. L. Quinn

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two simplified quantitative urine culture techniques, suitable for use in the physician's office, were shown to be reliable and practical. The miniature culture method (Testuria) and flood-plate technique gave comparable quantitative results, and the latter also yielded prompt information of organism specificity which was helpful in judging the significance of the culture findings.

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal Jan 1968

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. We shall briefly describe subsequent events under four headings: (1) Medical Zoology in Egypt, (2) Ticks and Tickborne Diseases of the World, (3) Kala Azar in …
