A Dengue Antibody Prevalence Study In New Providence, Bahamas, Veronica Toppin

Public Health Theses

Approximately 275 persons currently residing in New Providence, and whose ages ranged from 1-60 years were chosen to participate in school and pre/post natal clinic surveys testing for dengue antibody. Two hundred nine persons responded favorably. Blood samples taken from these individuals were tested for dengue antibody utilizing the IgM (MAC) Capture ELISA, the IgG ELISA and/or the Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. Twelve percent of the population tested were < 5 years, and the majority of the participants (55%) were between the ages of 5 and 9 Years.

The results showed that 15.4 % of the females, and 5.1 % of the males tested positive for dengue antibody. Three percent of the persons who tested positive to dengue were …

The Politics Of Aids: Compulsory State Powers, Public Health, And Civil Liberties, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1989

The Politics Of Aids: Compulsory State Powers, Public Health, And Civil Liberties, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article argues that compulsory public powers are justified only if they meet the following criteria: there is a significant risk of transmission of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) virus; the public health response is efficacious in preventing a primary mode of transmission of the virus; the economic, practical, or human rights burdens are not disproportionate to the public health benefits; and the public health power is the least restrictive alternative that would prevent viral transmission.

The author carefully examines the levels of risk posed by behavior which can potentially transmit human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and demonstrates that compulsory …

Validation Of Electronic Rectal Thermometry, Mark G. Goetting, Karen Stratton Dec 1988

Validation Of Electronic Rectal Thermometry, Mark G. Goetting, Karen Stratton

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Electronic rectal thermometry is performed routinely in most medical centers. While electronic thermometry has been validated at the oral site, rectal measurement has not. We performed a controlled study on 84 children comparing mercury-in-glass and electronic thermometry at the rectal site. No significant difference occurred in temperatures between the two methods. We conclude that the electronic thermometer is a valid instrument to measure rectal temperature.

Duplication And Deletion 11q23-Q24 Recombinants In Two Offspring Of An Intrachromosomal Insertion ("Shift") Carrier, Miriam G. Forsythe, Hugh Walker, Lester Weiss, Jacquelyn R. Roberson, Maria J. Worsham, V. Ramesh Babu, Daniel L. Van Dyke

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Few examples of intrachromosomal insertions have been described. These usually result from deletion of a segment of chromosome material, with insertion of the deleted material elsewhere on the same chromosome. Previous insertional translocations have been identified through a proband who has either a deletion or a duplication of the inserted segment. We describe a family which has two probands, one with a duplication and one with a deletion of the inserted segment. The unbalanced chromosomes probably resulted from an uneven number of crossovers between the breakpoints in the chromosome 11 of the father, who carries a balanced intrachromosomal insertion of …

The Application Of The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales Administered To 20 Developmentally Delayed Children, Jan H. Henderson

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to provide physical and occupational therapists with empirical data and clinical information that will enable them to better understand and utilize the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS) in the assessment of children who potentially may need physical and/or occupational therapy. The PDMS was administered to 20 developmentally delayed children between the ages of 24 and 83 months, who were receiving both physical and occupational therapy in the Chesapeake Public School System. The PDMS was also administered to 20 normal subjects between the ages of 24 and 77 months that were volunteers from the PTA …

Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed Jun 1988

Lead Poisoning: A Health Epidemic In The Black Community, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

Lead poisoning in humans has been identified as a cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, birth defects, complications in pregnancies and developmental problems in infants. It is a health problem of epidemic dimensions in the black community. This serious health problem is yet another example of the production of “illth” in the modern society. As the means of production create wealth for some sectors of society they also create illth.

Osteoporosis As A Community Health Problem: Lessons Learned From Studying Hypertension, Michael Kleerekoper, Dorothy A. Nelson Jun 1988

Osteoporosis As A Community Health Problem: Lessons Learned From Studying Hypertension, Michael Kleerekoper, Dorothy A. Nelson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Campaigns to increase the medical and lay communities' awareness and understanding of the problems of unrecognized and untreated hypertension have led to a progressive decline in morbidity and mortality from hypertension-related diseases. While osteoporosis is also a community health problem, educational and awareness campaigns are still in their infancy and decades may pass before these result in a declining morbidity and mortality from osteoporosis. We identify areas where concepts learned from years of hypertension research might be applicable lo the study of osteoporosis as a community health problem and thereby lessen the time needed to effect a declining morbidity and …

Biophysical Methods For Estimating In Vivo Body Composition: The Determination Of The Adipose Compartment, Luther E. Preuss, Frank P. Bolin Jun 1988

Biophysical Methods For Estimating In Vivo Body Composition: The Determination Of The Adipose Compartment, Luther E. Preuss, Frank P. Bolin

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The status of the human body's major components (adipose mass, lean mass, body water, etc) and their change with time are of clinical importance. Deviation of these body components from a stable condition may be imposed by nutrition or disease, and a return to the normal body state may be brought about by appropriate medical care. Thus accurate quantitation of these components is an important goal. This field of study can be traced to the early 1800s, with a major thrust starting in the 1940s and continuing lo the present. The last four decades have shown an accelerated development of …

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Profiles Of The Morbidly Obese, Philip J. Lanzisera, Allan Dehorn, Carolyn Macdonald, Conni Sroka, J. David Fachnie Jun 1988

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Profiles Of The Morbidly Obese, Philip J. Lanzisera, Allan Dehorn, Carolyn Macdonald, Conni Sroka, J. David Fachnie

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profiles of 132 morbidly obese individuals participating in a protein-sparing modified fast were examined via factor analytic methods yielding five interpretable psychometric factors. The results support the hypothesis that the morbidly obese are a psychologically heterogeneous population which can be subdivided conceptually. However, the findings fail to support the hypothesis that any particular psychopathology is intricately linked to the development of morbid obesity.

The Development And Application Of A Multiple Regression Equation That Predicts The Sum Of Triceps And Subscapular Skinfolds In Children Ages 10-18, Pamela Luna-Raffy Jun 1988

The Development And Application Of A Multiple Regression Equation That Predicts The Sum Of Triceps And Subscapular Skinfolds In Children Ages 10-18, Pamela Luna-Raffy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to predict the sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds in children ages 10-18. In addition, school-based weight management programs were reviewed.

Skinfold calipers are often used to assess body fat percentage, particularly in non-clinical settings, test sites recommended by researchers are the triceps and The subscapular skinfolds. Recently, however, educators have reported two concerns about using skinfold calipers in the schools: (1) Specialized training and equipment are required, and (2) individuals must remove their clothing from selected test sites.

For schools where the use of calipers present problems, it seemed …

How Do Harpacticoid Grazing Rates Differ Over A Tidal Cycle? Field Verification Using Chlorophyll-Pigment Analyses, Alan W. Decho Jun 1988

How Do Harpacticoid Grazing Rates Differ Over A Tidal Cycle? Field Verification Using Chlorophyll-Pigment Analyses, Alan W. Decho

Faculty Publications

Four species of meiobenthic copepods were examined for diatom feeding. Microscopic analysis of gut-pellet contents from field-collected individuals indicated frequent ingestion of diatoms by 3 harpacticoids (Scottolana canadensis, Microarthridion littorale, Cletocamptus deitersi) while occasional diatom ingestion occurred Paronychocamptus huntsmani. Frustules were usually empty and broken, indicating that contents were digested. Laboratory experiments using 14C-labeling showed assimilation of diatoms by the 3 species examined. Field grazing rate studies were conducted over different portions of a tidal cycle using fluorescent chlorophyll-pigment analysis of gut-contents. Highest diatom consumption (p<0.05) occurred just after the mudflat became exposed (i.e. Early Low Water level, ELW) for S. canadensis, while consumption at Late Low Water …

Clinical Manifestations Of Acute Pulmonary Embolism: Henry Ford Hospital Experience, A Five-Year Review, Kenneth V. Leeper Jr., John Popovich Jr., Deborah Adams, Paul D. Stein

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Clinical findings of 112 patients with angiographically proven pulmonary embolism over a five-year period were analyzed. Recent immobilization, chronic heart disease, deep venous thrombosis, malignancy, and recent surgery were the most frequent predisposing factors. Only 5% had no identifiable risk factors. Presenting syndromes were circulatory collapse (25%), pulmonary infarction (59%), and uncomplicated pulmonary embolism (18%). Dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain were the predominant symptoms. The combination of dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and hemoptysis occurred in 23% of the patients. The most frequent signs were tachypnea, tachycardia, and rales. Most of the patients demonstrated arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) between 50 and …

Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan Mar 1988

Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Sexual behavior is both a health issue and a moral issue. Hence public education on sexuality has traditionally come from two main sources, those individuals or groups concerned with health and those concerned with morals. In his book No Magic Bullet (Oxford University Press, 1985), Allan Brandt describes the tensions that developed between these groups over the control of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States early in this century. Both groups wanted to control sexual behavior, but for different reasons. Public health personnel wanted to change sexual behavior in order to control infection and disease, while moralists believed that …
