A Pervasive Principle And A Proposal For Postconviction Procedures: Res Judicata, Pro Se Petitions, And A Defendant's Right To Counsel In Ohio, Lila Robinson
Cleveland State Law Review
“A postconviction petition is very difficult to win.” This is especially true in Ohio. Many postconviction petitions are submitted by incarcerated pro se petitioners who draft and file petitions without the assistance of counsel, leaving the doctrine of res judicata free to overwhelm their claims and inhibit future relief. The American Bar Association advises states to impose a right to counsel in postconviction proceedings, and specifically at the early drafting and filing phase of postconviction litigation, to help remedy this issue. Ohio does not follow this suggestion. As a result, petitioners with valid claims of innocence or manifest injustice are …
Evaluating Pre-Task Versus Post-Task Reinforcer Choice: A Replication And Extension Of Blackman (2023), Evan M. Lipsky
Evaluating Pre-Task Versus Post-Task Reinforcer Choice: A Replication And Extension Of Blackman (2023), Evan M. Lipsky
Thesis Projects
Discrete trial training (DTT) is an individualized method of instruction that is foundational to the clinical practice of Applied Behavior Analysis. When presenting choices for reinforcement during a DTT session, there appear to be two plausible options for when the client may choose: either before task completion or after task completion. The overall conclusion drawn by previous researchers was that the relative effectiveness of either condition may be idiosyncratic. The purpose of this present study was to replicate and extend Blackman (2023) teaching only new skill acquisition targets, using non-edible tangible reinforcers, and including preassessment data for all participants. Two …

“The Left Leg Is Not Well”: Identity, Economy, And Ability In Early Modern Drama, Emma D. Whaley
“The Left Leg Is Not Well”: Identity, Economy, And Ability In Early Modern Drama, Emma D. Whaley
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The human reality of the disabled experience often goes overlooked by scholars analyzing early modern literature. Most scholarship seems to interpret disability as metaphorical without examining the human who experiences it. In this paper, I will be examining disability in three early modern texts as literal and inquire into the realities of the disabled experience for the characters. A Larum for London, The Shoemaker’s Holiday, and The Fair Maid of the Exchange all prominently feature a disabled character—Stump, Ralph, and Cripple respectively. These characters offer a depth of personhood rarely examined in early modern literary scholarship, even in …

“Music Is The Instrument To Bring The Heart Of A Community Together”: Frederic Balazs And The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, 1952-66, Jackie Bodily Biggs
Theses and Dissertations
The audience for classical music is declining, according to data from the National Endowment for the Arts. In the face of such challenges, aspiring music professionals may find inspiration in the musicological illumination of pertinent historical case studies. This paper offers one such example via a foundational exploration of the musical career of Hungarian American violinist, conductor, and composer Frederic Balazs. Though lacking any dedicated scholarly literature to speak of, Balazs’s legacy as the first full-time conductor of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) from 1952 to 1966 included establishing arts organizations and nourishing the classical tradition at its very grass …
Therapeutic Applications Of Tabletop Role-Playing Games In Treatment Of Depressive And Anxious Symptoms In Young Adults, Dash Degrote
Therapeutic Applications Of Tabletop Role-Playing Games In Treatment Of Depressive And Anxious Symptoms In Young Adults, Dash Degrote
Honors Theses
Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) are played by a large population and involve the engagement of social and emotional skills, with the largest portion of the population playing them being adolescents or young adults. The therapeutic application of TTRPGs in the treatment of depressive and anxious symptoms shows potential with this population. In a literature review, three major themes are identified: TTRPG culture, stakeholder perspectives of TTRPGs, and examples of therapeutically-applied TTRPGs. Overall, evidence suggests that TTRPGs can positively impact the concerned symptoms, though more research is needed for games outside of Dungeons & Dragons as well as stakeholder perspectives.
The Importance Of Trauma-Informed Care In The Juvenile Justice System, Kalinowski Lillian
The Importance Of Trauma-Informed Care In The Juvenile Justice System, Kalinowski Lillian
Honors Theses
Trauma is a common experience among justice-involved youth, though its developmental and behavioral impacts are not always fully accounted for within juvenile justice systems. Trauma-informed care has emerged as a promising framework for addressing these challenges, however, limited research has examined how consistently such approaches are implemented in practice. This study explores the implementation and perceived effectiveness of trauma-informed care within the juvenile justice system by drawing on semi-structured interviews with five clinicians who have professional experience working with justice-involved youth in the Midwest. The findings indicate that trauma-informed care is not consistently implemented across institutional settings, with 80% of …
Does Moneyball Still Win Games? A Twenty Year Analysis Of Mlb Success, Kevin Wright
Does Moneyball Still Win Games? A Twenty Year Analysis Of Mlb Success, Kevin Wright
Honors Theses
This thesis evaluates whether the core principles of the Moneyball ideology continue to predict team success in Major League Baseball in the modern analytics era. In the last two decades, the widespread adoption of advanced statistical methods across all franchises has raised the central question of whether the original inefficiencies Moneyball exploited may no longer exist. To address this, this study analyzes twenty years of team‑level data from 2005-2025 (excluding 2020), incorporating seven performance metrics historically or conceptually tied to Moneyball which include OBP, WHIP, FIP, DRS, SB%, clutch, and wins per dollar, alongside demographic controls. Success is measured across …

Martin Tawney's Guide To The Middle Of Nowhere, Daniel D. Graham
Martin Tawney's Guide To The Middle Of Nowhere, Daniel D. Graham
English Honors Projects
Martin Tawney’s Guide to the Middle of Nowhere is a portion of a novel that parodies Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai film Yojimbo. Yojimbo is a trickster narrative which drew influence from the noir genre and went on to influence other Westerns. This project turns that story into one about a travel writer who visits a town with two feuding hotels. The travel writer escalates the feud to create the story he wants to tell, but he loses control over it. The project explores what a trickster narrative looks like when the trickster cannot maintain their power over the story.

Independent English Teaching In Brazil: A Case Study, Jade G. Gunca
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study investigates the experiences and practices of successful independent English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Brazil who operate outside traditional schools and private language institutes. Rather than providing a broad descriptive profile, this study offers an in-depth examination of a small group of teachers. These educators frequently use social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to showcase communicative, personalized, and flexible instruction in response to growing learner demand. Although English is widely taught in Brazilian schools, persistent structural constraints often limit students’ development of communicative proficiency, prompting some learners to seek instruction from independent …

Horror authors from the late 20th century explain the turmoil of domestic and childhood abuse through supernatural elements to represent the loss of autonomy of victims. Several horror authors from the late 20th century showcase abuse through the supernatural not to exploit the experiences of victims of abuse but allow for spaces for readers to encounter truly horrifying stories and process them. Works explored include Stephen King’s The Shining and Carrie, as well as Ira Levin’s Rosemary's Baby and William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist.
Factors That Contribute To Successful Supervision For Pretrial Defendants With Diagnosed Mental Health Disorders, Kisha Gordon
Factors That Contribute To Successful Supervision For Pretrial Defendants With Diagnosed Mental Health Disorders, Kisha Gordon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals with mental health disorders are overrepresented in the criminal justice system, yet minimal evidence exists on how risk-based case management influences pretrial supervision. Existing literature focuses on post-conviction populations, with limited focus on pretrial defendants, particularly those with mental health disorders and gaps in how gender and mental health intersect to influence supervision outcomes. The study addressed the problem of whether risk-based case management improves pretrial outcomes for defendants with mental health needs and vary by gender or case management components. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, retrospective design study was to examine the relationship between case management and …

Energetic Characterization Of 3-D Printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Fuels For Hybrid Rocket Propulsion Applications, Stephen A. Whitmore, Ryan J. Thibaudeau, Ava T. Wilkey
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Hybrid rocket technologies are gaining recognition as eco-friendly alternatives to traditional propulsion systems. Utah State University’s Propulsion Research Laboratory has developed a High-Performance Green Hybrid Propulsion (HPGHP) technology, leveraging 3D-printed ABS fuel for reliable, low-energy ignition. Among tested materials, only ABS shows suitable electrical-breakdown properties for arc ignition. Unfortunately, due to the proprietary formulations in commercial ABS blends, and its limited use as a rocket-propellant, related composition and combustion data are limited. This study uses spectroscopic evaluation and bomb calorimetry to estimate material compositions, enthalpies of formation, and combustion energies for multiple commercially available 3-D print feed stock ABS types, …

Cameras Or Divers? How Baited Remote Underwater Videos And ‘Long Swims’ Underwater Visual Census Complement Each Other On Coral Reefs, Kennedy Osuka-Edeye, Melita Samoilys, Bryce D. Stewart, Colin J. Mcclean, Peter Musembi, Saleh Yahya
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Conventional methods for surveying coral reefs, such as underwater visual census (UVC), often underestimate large-bodied, mobile, or cryptic fish species due to limitations in diver mobility and visual detection. To address these limitations, rapid timed ‘Long Swim’ (LS) UVC protocols have been developed to better capture large predator assemblages, yet their performance relative to baited remote underwater videos (BRUV) remains poorly evaluated in topographically complex oceanic reef environments. This study provides the first site-specific comparison of BRUVS and LS-UVC protocols for predatory reef fish from nine selected families on the reefs of Pemba Island, Tanzania. To ensure robustness, we implemented …
Enhancing Soybean Breeding Through Optimized Testing Networks And Sparse Designs, Arthur Martins Almeida Bernardeli
Enhancing Soybean Breeding Through Optimized Testing Networks And Sparse Designs, Arthur Martins Almeida Bernardeli
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation addresses a central challenge in soybean breeding: how to make better selection decisions across diverse environments while working within the practical limits of field testing. Multi-environment testing is essential for evaluating breeding lines, but large testing networks are costly to maintain and difficult to interpret because genotype performance often changes across locations and years. At the same time, breeders must decide how to allocate limited field resources while still capturing the environmental and genetic variation needed for effective selection. Using yield, pedigree, genomic, and environmental data from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Soybean Breeding Program, this dissertation explores practical …

The New Era Of Pulmonary Hypertension: The Dawn Of Disease Modification & Therapeutic Modalities, Noyan Ramazani, Lacey Barnes, Alex Wong, Divyansh Sharma, Aditi Singh, Kachon Lei
Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Research
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) can be defined as a mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) greater than 20 mm Hg at rest during right heart catheterization (RHC). The reported prevalence of PH throughout the globe has been estimated to impact approximately 1% of the total population, with a majority of those afflicted being women more than men. Numerous etiologies give rise to the pathophysiology of PH, including heart disease (i.e., left-sided heart failure), lung diseases, and other unclear causes related to chronic stages and complications surrounding long-standing pulmonary thromboembolisms, side effects of certain medications, and genetic and environmental factors. Untreated PH can …

Patient-Level Breast Cancer Classification From Multi-View Mammography With Side-Specific Evidence For Interpretability, Bushra Intakhab
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death among women. Early detection through screening mammography is therefore very important. However, mammogram interpretation can be difficult because abnormalities may be subtle and spread across different views. The increasing workload of radiologists can also affect timely analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely explored to support mammography interpretation by improving speed and consistency. However, many existing AI methods focus on patch-level or image-level analysis rather than the full patient exam. This limits their ability to capture the complete clinical picture, since important information is distributed across multiple views. In …

The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
The Great Depression And Canada's Major Originalist Decade, Preston Jordan Lim
Faculty Publications
Few periods of Canadian history have been as momentous or terrible as the Great Depression. The Dominion and provincial governments’ inability to combat financial and environmental catastrophe led many Canadians to openly question the appropriateness of their constitutional framework. As legal historians have since documented, many leading jurists of the time believed that a strong central government could, through the institution of national programs, contain the Great Depression; in the eyes of these 1930s jurists, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council—then Canada’s apex court—had sapped the federal government of its powers by misinterpreting the British North America Act, 1867 …

The Higher Education Classroom And The Digital Native: Are We Prepared?, Marc Wharton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Among the challenges facing higher education (HE) today is the entrance of digital native students into the HE classroom. At the turn of the 21st century, the term “digital native” was popularized, along with the claim that the immersion of digital natives in the digital universe, through mobile phones and social media, would determinately alter the manner in which these students learned. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the learning experiences of nine digital native students attending a southeastern public research university, as well as the perspectives and/or teaching methods of five of their faculty. Spot Scanning Proton Beams Characterization Via Plastic Scintillator Detector, Saad Bin Saeed Ahmed
Spot Scanning Proton Beams Characterization Via Plastic Scintillator Detector, Saad Bin Saeed Ahmed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
In spot scanning proton therapy, the machine steers magnetically a narrow pencil beam across the target volume, delivering highly conformal dose distributions layer by layer. As beam size is very small, this introduces a dosimetry problem. The beam is dynamic and the dose gradients are steep — conditions that push conventional ionization chambers beyond their reliable operating range. Plastic scintillation detectors offer a potential solution. Their sub-millimeter active volumes avoid the volume-averaging effects over larger chambers, and their very high temporal resolution making real-time monitoring feasible. This thesis characterizes the Blue Physics plastic scintillation detector in spot scanning proton fields …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
My thesis work, Dixie Knights , Dissonance and Contradictions uses painting, ceramics, illustration, and installation to ask, “What does it mean to be Southern in contemporary times?” Using Willie Morris’s opening statements in The Southern Album, it is grappled through a post-digital lens. The works use collaged quilt patterns, pixelized video game references, surreal interior/exterior spaces, art historical dialogue and auto-biographical details. These motifs explore the complexities of how Southerness is impacted by class, history, race, occupation, being in a state of constant cognitive dissonance, and cultural synthesis that occurs when different moments of influence come together to create new …
