Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Bemis Park: A Study of Neighborhood Change," by Garneth O. Peterson.

The 1970's have been marked by a rebirth of inner city neighborhoods for commerce and housing. Developers in Boston, Washington and other cities have begun to rehabilitate old structures rather than destroy them, and thus preserve the visual character of neighborhoods. Residents of older neighborhoods have also banded together into homeowner's associations to lead the attempts to redevelop and rejuvenate their surroundings. 1 The viability of older central city neighborhoods has come to be recognized as essential to the economic …

Climatic Change Considered As The Major Factor In The Abandonment Of The Grand Canyon Region, Paulette Fern Rayel Apr 1978

Climatic Change Considered As The Major Factor In The Abandonment Of The Grand Canyon Region, Paulette Fern Rayel

Masters Theses

Introduction

Grand Canyon National Park comprises 1009 square miles of contrasting life zones and landscapes, with elevations ranging from 2500 feet at the Colorado River to more than 9000 feet of the North Rim. This area includes 117 miles of the Canyon, part of the Kaibab Plateua known as the North Rim and part of the Coconino Plateau or South Rim. Both formations are included in the Colorado Plateau (See Figures 1 and 2).

Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric agriculturalists - the Cohonina peoples and later the Anasazi - resided in the area from circa A. D. 700 until A. …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "New Single-Family Houses Constructed in Douglas and Sarpy Counties During 1977," by Jack Ruff and Linda Ferring.

Home building has been called one of the brightest spots in the nation's economy in 1977, as construction increased 29 percent since 1976.1 Building permits issued in 1977 for residential units in Douglas and Sarpy counties indicate a 15 percent rise from 1976. The past year was the second year of increase in total permit units after the recessionary slump in construction activity early in the decade. Single-family housing permits have increased for three …

Energy Efficiency: Determination And Commentary, Dennis M. Richter Jan 1978

Energy Efficiency: Determination And Commentary, Dennis M. Richter

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Energy consumption is generally associated with quality of life and living standard of a society. Is this assumption correct and is the U.S.A. as efficient in converging the use of energy into societal well being as other countries of the world? These assumptions are explored and suggestions made concerning energy efficiency.

Identification Of Prime Residential Land In Rural Nebraska, Edward W. Hauswald, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar) Jan 1978

Identification Of Prime Residential Land In Rural Nebraska, Edward W. Hauswald, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

The achievement of an optimal allocation of rural lands between agricultural and nonagricultural uses requires attention to the suitability of the land for both uses. A complete study of land use would include a cataloguing and classification of those factors or conditions that make rural land suitable for agricultural and nonagricultural uses, with special attention to differentiation between the two, and an identification and classification of the rural areas suitable for rural residential development.

The principal objective of this study is to develop an index or classification scheme of those factors and conditions that determine the suitability of rural land …

The Attraction Of Interstate Radial Freeway Corridors For New Office Sites, Murray Frost, Armin K. Ludwig Jan 1978

The Attraction Of Interstate Radial Freeway Corridors For New Office Sites, Murray Frost, Armin K. Ludwig

Publications

This paper discuses the impact of Interstate radial freeway corridors upon the location of new office developments in the 1970-76 period in seven United States cities. Data indicated that in each of the seven cities, greater growth occurred outside of the downtown Core than in it. Growth of the office sites compared to previous development ranged from 12% to 110% in the Cores with an average of 24%, compared to 106% to 307% for non-Core areas with an average of 207%. Growth expressed in terms of gross square feet had a similar pattern. Of the 1970-76 office development, the greatest …

Dissolution Of Kansas Evaporites, The Radioactive Waste Disposal Problem, Barbara J. Smith Oct 1977

Dissolution Of Kansas Evaporites, The Radioactive Waste Disposal Problem, Barbara J. Smith

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The radioactive waste repository at Lyons, Kansas, focused attention on the problem of evaporite dissolution. More study is needed in the determination of the mechanisms responsible for deterioration. Also recent water use policies have been questioned with the need pointed out for increased effectiveness in planning. Good water planning has to take into account the role of evaporite dissolution in water quality.

Household Energy Availability And Use -- A Systems Theory Formulation, Charles Geiger, Milton E. Harvey Oct 1977

Household Energy Availability And Use -- A Systems Theory Formulation, Charles Geiger, Milton E. Harvey

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Systems theory provides an excellent perspective, as well as methodology, for analyzing energy problems of availability and use. The linear systems format is applied here to a system which focuses on household energy, energy independence, and energy conservation. Z-transform analysis can be used to simplify the mathematical operations required in this model.

The Impact Of A Continuing Energy Crisis: Changing Attitudes And Behaviors Regarding Thermostat Setback, John W. Frazier, Milton E. Harvey Oct 1977

The Impact Of A Continuing Energy Crisis: Changing Attitudes And Behaviors Regarding Thermostat Setback, John W. Frazier, Milton E. Harvey

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A sample of Akron, Ohio SMSA households are utilized to examine thermostat setback as an energy conservation strategy. Socio-economic differences between adopting households are evaluated using discriminant analysis. The results constitute the bases on which our recommendations for future increased use of the thermostat setback strategy are made.

Manufacturers' Responses To Fuel Supply Problems, Evelyn R. Rosenthal Oct 1977

Manufacturers' Responses To Fuel Supply Problems, Evelyn R. Rosenthal

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The progress of energy conservation in industry was investigated with the aim of identifying barriers to strong energy conservation efforts. One of these barriers proved to be fuel supply problems as exemplified by the natural gas shortage of 1976-77.
