The principle of reinforcement developed by experimenting with individual subjects has been extended in recent years for use with groups. In most of these studies some social interaction within the group is reinforced. For example, Azrin and Lindsley (1956) and Lindsley (1961) have manipulated imitation, cooperation, and competition between two subjects in an operant conditioning situation. Levin and Shapiro (1962) manipulated conversation between members of a group through appropriate reinforcement. Glaser and Klaus (1962) conditioned a team of two monitors and an observer to respond as a unit by reinforcing the group only when each member had made the proper …

The present study is an attempt to objectify the subjective concept of adaptive behavior and to show the effect of institutionalization upon adaptive behavior.

The development of an Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet consisting of forty-five items is a major portion of this study.

The Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet was administered to a sample of ninety patients who, at the time of administration, had been in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC) between one year six months and two years six months.

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the predictive power of Bower’s associative model in an investigation of the “hook-up” phase of paired-associate transfer. Presumably, if the model had sufficient power to generate results predicting transfer performance, then other aspects of the verbal learning process, e.g., the response-learning stage, might conceivably submit to a similar analysis. Thus a synthesis of the laws governing verbal learning could possibly be achieved via mathematical integration.

It was the purpose of this study to identify the emotional needs of patients with infectious hepatitis through the use of nursing process studies. The information obtained, it was hoped, would be helpful in giving nurses better insight into the emotional needs of these patients and to give a basis for planning nursing care.

The descriptive survey was the method used; the tool, the nursing process study. Nursing care was given to six patients between the ages of 18 and 45 who had infectious hepatitis without other complications.

This study was conducted to discover the effects of (1) an interpersonal relationship and (2) an interpersonal relationship and music therapy on preoperative patients in a selected hospital.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study. A checklist and a tape recording of selected music were used as a tool of research. Two groups of preoperative patients were given nursing care by the researcher. Patients in Group One received care with an aim toward developing an interpersonal relationship, while patients in Group Two received the same as Group One with the addition of music therapy.

It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. Different experimental techniques were constructed to measure these concepts. One of the tools used to measure personality factors and their effect on perception was the tachistoscope. Through the use of this instrument, words or pictures could be flashed on a screen at varying rates of speed, or illumination. Following the success of Alfred Binet's test of intellectual ability, many tests with many different purposes were developed. Some of these tests are referred to as tests of ability, others seek to establish the subject's typical performance or how he is most likely to act in a given situation. Personality tests fall into this second class. The two general methods of personality are referred to as unstructured and structured techniques. The unstructured method is time-consuming.
