This is a report of a study which investigated the performance of two experimental groups of adult psychiatric patients and one group of noninstltutional control subjects on Sets A, B, C, D, and E of the 1956 revised edition of the Ravens Progressive Matrices (1938 Fora, referred to throughout this paper as the PM). The two experimental subject groups consisted of a chronic schizophrenic reaction group and a chronic brain disorder without-psychosis group.

This is a study of the relationship between scores made by applicants on the Thurstone Test of Mental Alertness and the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values and subsequent job success as Psychiatric Aides in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. During the period covered by the study, there was a total of 93 applicants tested. Of that number, 16 were hired as Psychiatric Aide Trainees. One of the Trainees failed to complete the 14 week training program. Of the 15 trainees who were promoted to the Aide position, one entered the armed forces.

There is a large body of evidence (e.g., 9, 13) to indicate that as an individual develops there are both quantitative and qualitative changes in the concepts he uses to group stimuli. An appraisal of this research reflects two immediate deficiencies: (a) there is a scarcity of controlled, systematic studies using normal children as subjects: and (b) there is a lack of instruments suitable for comparative studies across wide areas of the developmental range.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine experimentally the phenomenon of perceptual defense as it is related to cigarette smoking behavior. In making this examination a population of undergraduate college students was divided into three groups according to their smoking habits. The three groups were identified as smokers, non-smokers, and quitters. A list of smoking related words was equated with a list of neutral words according to their frequency of appearance in print. These lists of words were then combined to form one list with a random distribution of smoking and neutral words, and this list was presented as …

During the last decade increasing attention has been paid to the effects of the perceptual variables in the environment of an organism upon the behavior of that organism. The importance of deprivation of exteroceptive stimulation is shown by the study of Bexton, Heron, and Scott (1954). Human Ss were placed in an isolated cubicle and wore equipment restricting visual and tactual stimulation. The Ss reactions included hallucinations, deterioration of intellectual abilities, and inability to tolerate the treatment for extended periods.

The Objective of the present study was to compare performance of normals and retardates on an expressive motor task. The test used was the Mira Myokinetic Psychodiagnosis. This test was selected because of its quality of objectivity and lack of use in the area of mental retardation. Cartwright and Zander (1953) distinguished at least three different meanings in their intuitive and operational descriptions of group cohesiveness: (a) attraction to the group, (b) morale, and (c) coordination of efforts of group members. Others have attempted to classify meanings of cohesiveness into two general categories. One category of definitions centers chiefly on particular aspects of group behavior or group process. Here, the meaning of cohesiveness refers to "sticking togetherness," productivity, task involvement and good team work. A common observation is that members of a cohesive group display a feeling of "we-ness" or "togetherness," meaning …

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Based on the findings of the Walker study of the Lowenfield Mosaic test (1957) and the [other] studies of creativity, the following hypotheses may be made. Creative children will make original or novel designs and show complex use of color and shape. Their designs will be more asymmetrical in shape and placement and contain a greater number of places than the designs of noncreative children. They will make representational rather than abstract designs, and their human and animal figures will show motion.
