Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study was to assess the validity of the undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), the grade point average during the last two years of undergraduate work (LTYR), the Graduate Record Examination Verbal plus Graduate Record Examination Quantitative scores (GREM), the Graduate Record Examination Analytical Test score (GREAN) and the Graduate Record Examination Advanced Psychology Test score (GREAD) as predictors of graduate grade point averages (GGPA) in the Master of Arts degree program in Psychology at Western Kentucky University. The validity of the Graduate Record Examination Quantitative score (GREQ) as a predictor of grades received in the two …
Yet Another Look At Depth Of Processing, Marilyn Graves
Yet Another Look At Depth Of Processing, Marilyn Graves
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A review of the depth of processing literature revealed that the major criticism of the approach was that no independent measure of depth of processing had teen used. The present study was designed to compare the effects of three standard depth of processing tasks to a free -association baseline --the baseline constitutes an independent measure of depth of processing. Structural, phonemic, and semantic tasks were manipulated in the study and subjects were given cues or prompters as an aid in recall. Cues were taken from a list of target words used by Bahrick (1969). Bahrick's norms constituted a free -association …

The Effect Of Tone Frequency Spacing On Perception Of Order In Repeating Tone Sequences, James Raymond Comstock Jr.
The Effect Of Tone Frequency Spacing On Perception Of Order In Repeating Tone Sequences, James Raymond Comstock Jr.
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The "stream" hypothesis states that the order of repeating tone sequences in which the tones are closely spaced in frequency is easier for subjects to report, than is the order of sequences in which the tones are widely spaced. To permit a partial replication of prior tests of this hypothesis in the present experiment, a uniformly-spaced-narrow condition (sinusoidal waves spaced at intervals of 1/4 octave), and a uniformly spaced-wide condition (intervals of 1 1/8 octave), were used. Two additional conditions were created to test the hypothesis that a large frequency separation, or "gap," between the highest or lowest tone in …
The Ability Of Young Children To Recognize Facial Photographs Of Young Children, Young Adults, And Senior Citizens, Barbara Bell Bruff
The Ability Of Young Children To Recognize Facial Photographs Of Young Children, Young Adults, And Senior Citizens, Barbara Bell Bruff
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
A review of the literature on facial recognition including a description of its development from birth to old age, hypothesized reasons for its unique development, and factors which affect it, reveals the need for facial recognition studies involving the young child. Twenty children (10 males, 10 females) at each of three ages (3, 5, and 7 years) were presented with 30 pictures of persons of both sexes from three age groups (3-7, 18-25, and 50 years and above). A testing procedure followed in which each child was asked to pick out the test picture from a photo album page with …
Effects Of Sleep Loss On Information-Processing In An Absolute Judgment Task As A Function Of Task Difficulty, Frieda O'Steen Carlton
Effects Of Sleep Loss On Information-Processing In An Absolute Judgment Task As A Function Of Task Difficulty, Frieda O'Steen Carlton
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The effects of 36 hours of sleep loss on information-processing were assessed in an absolute judgment task. Of the 24 subjects employed, 12 served in the sleep-loss (experimental) and control conditions, respectively. All subjects were tested individually for a total of ten sessions; the control group was tested on ten consecutive days, whereas the experimental subjects were tested every four hours over a 36-hour period of sleep loss, and at a recovery session following approximately 12 hours of rest and recovery. The task required subjects to make absolute judgments of the size of two small circles of light and to …
Effects Of Practice On The Rate Of Gain Of Information In A Paper And Pencil Task, Dennis Howard Jones
Effects Of Practice On The Rate Of Gain Of Information In A Paper And Pencil Task, Dennis Howard Jones
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Investigations into the effects of practice on choice reaction time (CRT) performance and the rate of gain of information have produced confusing and often contradictory results. This seems to stem from the fact that (1) a small number of subjects were utilized and (2) there were an insufficient number of experimental conditions. In the present experiments, the author has developed a Reaction Time Battery (RTB) that allows a large group of subjects to be tested efficiently and economically. Using three levels of stimulus uncertainty (1, 2, or 3 bits) factorial to two levels of S-R compatibility (low and high), Experiment …
Figural Identity Effects On The Perception Of Apparent Movement Produced By A Bistable Multielement Motion Display, Don Michael Mcanulty
Figural Identity Effects On The Perception Of Apparent Movement Produced By A Bistable Multielement Motion Display, Don Michael Mcanulty
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present study investigated the effect of figural identity, and its interaction with temporal presentation variables, on the perception of apparent movement when the preservation of figural identity did not conflict with the perception of a change in stimulus location. The tachistoscopic presentation of bistable multielement motion displays permitted the analysis of the type of motion perceived (either one element or the group of elements), rather than the probability of perceiving motion, which eliminated the conflict between the figural preservation and locational displacement of the stimuli. Twelve subjects nested in each of three stimulus configuration ensembles (N = 36) were …

Prediction Of Football-Playing Ability In Spring Training Tryouts Through The Use Of Psychobiomotor Assessment, Michael D. Secunda
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Psychobiomotor assessment refers to the use of a combination of psychological, biological, and motor-performance tests to comprehensively analyze the skills, attributes, and performance capabilities of athletes. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that there are significant psychobiomotor differences between successful collegiate football players in the offensive backfield positions and those players who are rates as less successful in these positions. Subjects were 19 male volunteer tryouts (mean age = 20.5) for the positions of quarterback and halfback on the inaugural University of Central Florida football team. They were assessed on the physiological variable anaerobic capacity, they …
Effects Of The Step Parent Education Program On Parenting Styles And Reported Child Behavior Problems, Patty H. Lee
Effects Of The Step Parent Education Program On Parenting Styles And Reported Child Behavior Problems, Patty H. Lee
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Three groups of parents were given a nine week parent education course using Dinkmeyer and McKay's Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. Three control groups were given no training. Pretest and posttest data were obtained from all six groups to test the hypotheses: Training with the STEP program will change parent attitudes toward a less authoritarian parenting style, and these changes will result in fewer problems reported by the parents in child behavior. Using Ernhart and Loevinger's Authoritarian Ideology Scale no significant differences in authoritarianism were found after training [F(1,5) = 2.45, p = .123]. Using McKay's Adlerian Parental Assessment of …

Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, Type A-B Behavior, Job Performance, And Psychosomatic Dysfunction, John Steven Mattone
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of the present study was to determine empirically whether differences in perceived role conflict, role ambiguity, and Type A proclivities are associated with differences in perceived psychosomatic dysfunction. Moreover, an ancillary purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences in perceived job performance were associated with Type A-B tendencies and perceived role conflict and ambiguity. Data for 72 workers from all levels of two types of organizations (i.e., citizen protection and health) were obtained. All workers completed a role conflict and ambiguity measure, a 15-item self-report index of psychosomatic dysfunction, a 7-poimt measure of job …
Jungian Theory And Social Work Practice, Herman Borenzweig
Jungian Theory And Social Work Practice, Herman Borenzweig
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Carl Jung's contributions to psychology, psychotherapy, and social science have had little impact upon social wonk practice. Social Work Abstracts to lists only one article where Jungian theory is utilized by social workers. McBroom has recently written an article "The Collective Unconscious as a Unifying Concept in Teaching Human Behavior Cross Culturally:" If only two articles about Jungian psychology have appeared in the social work literature in the last twelve years it seems safe to assume either that the ,Jungian oriented social workers practice their Jung underground and fail to publish on that Jung remains anathema to the profession.

Semantic Information In The Long-Term Memory Traces Of Nouns, John K. Adams
Semantic Information In The Long-Term Memory Traces Of Nouns, John K. Adams
Student Work
What is the nature of the long-term memory trace of an event or episode (Tulving, 1972)? Recently, several studies (MacLeod, 1976; Nelson, 1971; Nelson, Fehling, & Moore-Glascock, 1979; Nelson & Rothbart, 1972) have addressed this question.
These studies made use of the savings paradigm, which is based upon a well-known phenomenon: Relearning forgotten verbal material is often easier than learning verbal material for the first time. The term savings was used by Ebbinghaus (1885/1964) to refer to this relearning advantage.
Effects Of Participation In Goal Setting When Task Ability And Goal Difficulty Are Held Constant, Melvin G. Cash
Effects Of Participation In Goal Setting When Task Ability And Goal Difficulty Are Held Constant, Melvin G. Cash
Student Work
Undergraduate psychology students (N = 60) were randomly assigned to do-your-best, assigned, or participative goal-setting conditions. The sample was split at the mean on the basis of scores received on a clerical test, resulting in low- and high-ability groups. Specific Goals led to higher performance than did the do-your-best goals. With task ability and goal difficulty held, constant, there was no significant difference between the assigned and participative conditions on goal attainment, goal acceptance, or performance.
When the groups were split on ability, only the low ability group performed significantly better than the do-your-best group. Two reasons are suggested to …

The Investigation Of An Imagery Technique As A Screening Device For Reading Difficulties, Joseph Saxe
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A form for assessing imagery ability based on behavioral criteria in response to an imaginary ball toss was developed and its utility as a screening device for reading difficulties was evaluated. The Imagery Assessment Form was administered to 167 kindergarten, second, fourth and sixth grade children. Grade and sex differences were compared and the imagery scores were correlated with standardized reading achievement scores. Significant mean score differences were found between kindergarteners and second graders only. Significant sex differences in imagery were observed across all grade groups. There was no sex by grade interaction. Positive significant correlations between imagery and reading …

Associative, Semantic, 'Thematic, And Syntactic Factors In The Memory Representations Of Sentences, Tracy L. Brown
Associative, Semantic, 'Thematic, And Syntactic Factors In The Memory Representations Of Sentences, Tracy L. Brown
Student Work
This study addressed two issues in sentence memory: Hie accuracy of Gestalt representations of sentences over strictly associative accounts, and the role of syntactic, semantic, and thematic variables in characterizing the organizational basis of sentence representations. Sixteen pairs of SVO sentences were generated with a single noun shared by both member sentences of each pair. After a study period during which subjects wrote expansions of stimulus sentences, memory for the shared nouns was tested using subject-verb or object-verb cues from one or both member sentences of each pair. According to associative accounts of sentence memory, mixed cues using one component …
Dogmatism And Inequality: Effects On Affect And Performance, S. Alan Rosenkrantz
Dogmatism And Inequality: Effects On Affect And Performance, S. Alan Rosenkrantz
Student Work
An experiment was conducted to examine the relationships among dogmatism, perceived fairness, and subjects’ affective responses and performance effectiveness. One hundred and twenty male and female university students were divided into three equity treatment groups: equity, and inequity with ability or without ability to control their inputs. Each inequity group was informed that greater inputs were demanded of them than were demanded of the other groups in exchange for the same rewards. Subjects were also blocked on three levels of dogmatism. Each dependent variable was subjected to analysis of variance in a 3 X 3 factorial design. Inequity with input-control …
The Relationship Between Risk And The Respondent's Level Of Socialization In The Military, Robert E. Wetzel
The Relationship Between Risk And The Respondent's Level Of Socialization In The Military, Robert E. Wetzel
Student Work
The following thesis deals with a sensitive issue, namely the examination of risk-taking behaviors in a military context. Generally, it is agreed that certain decisions made by the military are considerably more vast and important (in terms of the sociopolitical, and moral ramifications) than decisions reached by non-military groups. In light of this agreement, any analysis of risk-taking behavior could be interpreted as threatening to the image of the military. Understanding the sensitivity of the central theme of the following thesis demands an understanding of the assumptions of the investigation. The two major assumptions of this work are: a) the …

Comparison Of Two Receptive Language Tests (Ppvt And Tacl) Used With The Developmentally Delayed, Paul H. Lamb
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to compare the results as recorded in mental ages of the PPVT and TACL when used with developmentally delayed children. One aspect was to observe how well the mean mental age from each test would compare with the mean mental age obtained from psychometric testing (WISC-R or SB-LM results). Another aspect was to determine how well the data from the PPVT and from the TACL would correlate with the psychometric testing results.

This is basically a replication study of the Azrin and Foxx method of toilet training utilizing behavior modification techniques. This systematic procedure was first applied to institutionalized retardates by Azrin and Foxx; therefore, the author's Intent was to prove that this same procedure would be successful with normal children who met certain developmental criteria and were twenty months of age and older. Twenty subjects were used in this study, eleven males and nine females whose ages ranged from twenty to thirty-six months. None of the children had prior toilet training experience. Seventeen of, the twenty children were trained successfully initially. …
Communication Apprehension As A Predictor Of Proxemic Establishment, Self-Esteem, & Dogmatism, Joseph Cardot Iii
Communication Apprehension As A Predictor Of Proxemic Establishment, Self-Esteem, & Dogmatism, Joseph Cardot Iii
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Based upon limited findings dealing with nonverbal behavior and personality traits as they relate to communication apprehension, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of communication apprehension with proxemic establishment, self-esteem, and dogmatism. The study analyzed these variables utilizing subjects who were statistically either high or low communication apprehensives. Interesting results were attained. An inverse relationship between apprehension and proxemic establishment was revealed, such that dyads containing low-low members established greater interpersonal distance than dyads containing high-low members who established greater interpersonal distance than dyads containing high-high members. Communication apprehension overrode the sex variable with relation to …
The Effect Of Intelligence Test Feedback Upon Self-Concept As Measured By The Epps, Gregory Heeter
The Effect Of Intelligence Test Feedback Upon Self-Concept As Measured By The Epps, Gregory Heeter
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Previous research on the nature of the self-concept generally suggests that this particular construct is broad, stable, and not easily altered. Yet, current practice regarding the feedback of information concerning one's intelligence quotient remains restrictive and unresponsive to this evidence. Individuals are protected from the knowledge of their test results ostensibly to prevent harmful effects upon their self-images. The present study focused on the impact of learning one's assessed intelligence quotient upon needs taken from a measure of self-report. It was predicted that subjects who had received feedback accurately specifying their intelligence quotients and who had reported discrepancies between this …
